Everybody Loves Dora

September 4, 2021 by Kelsi

Humans and chimps all really do love Dora, who wouldn’t! As I walked by the front rooms I found Rayne and Dora playing. Eventually, Lucky wanted to join the fun. Dora may be teeny tiny, but she can hold her own if she needs to! Dora may be small, but she sure is mighty!

After the play session Lucky needed to rest.

Cy guy <3. I think Cy has stolen everyone’s heart in this chimp house. I truly have never met a chimp sweeter than Cy.

Missy spying on the neighbors, while wearing a stylish grape sock.

Burrito being his perfect self!

And Jamie! She built this incredibly cozy, comfy, HUGE nest and then tucked herself in.

Can’t Help Falling In Love (With Fall)

August 30, 2021 by Anthony

For those of you who aren’t acquainted with this slang term, a “basic” person has uninteresting interests.

To be fair, being labeled as basic isn’t necessarily bad. Basic things are, by definition, quite popular.

In a way, basic people are anti-hipsters. Rather than having eclectic or unique tastes, they enjoy activities that are universally-liked by everyone else. The cliché basic person is a 20-something educated female who listens to Taylor Swift, uses TikTok, watches The Office, and drinks pumpkin spice lattes in August. Oddly, a common stereotype is that these people all LOVE autumn and anything even loosely associated with the season. (Of course, fall is also the perfect time to show off a diverse collection of flannel shirts and take artsy photos of fallen leaves.)

While the term has only been applied to humans, I’d like to argue that even chimps can be basic.

For example, Negra’s hobbies include eating spring grass, eating peanuts and chow, watching the caregivers work, and napping peacefully on high platforms. None of these interests are avant-garde, and Negra seems totally fine with that. She doesn’t want to be surprised, shocked, or inconvenienced; she just wants to enjoy the simple, familiar pleasures. She’s basic to the core and seems to be proud of it.

Perhaps the world would be a better place if we were all, like Negra, comfortable with our own basicness.

I’m sure that if Negra had her own Instagram, she’d be posting selfies of herself enjoying the cool autumn breeze under a pile of fleece blankets today. Since she doesn’t have her own social media, I decided to post on her behalf today.

Today’s Forecast: Rayne

August 10, 2021 by Chad de Bree

So there wasn’t any rain in today’s forecast, though I think everyone would appreciate some in the state, but there is Rayne!

There are so many aspects about Rayne that remind us of Honey B. The stare she gives you. Her confidence in knowing what she wants and likes. And catch her at the right angle and you would be fooled on who is who. Let’s not forget they are biological sisters.

Though Rayne and her group have been here over a month and they have shown us a great deal of their personalities, we really are still finding new things out about them. One thing we are learning about Rayne, she seems to love food puzzles. Just like Honey B.

Rayne with three Boomer Balls

As Anthony has mentioned before, Rayne and Friends are a little bit more destructive than we had anticipated when it comes to their enrichment. So we have been slowly been introducing them to new things, one-by-one. Boomer Balls have been the latest.

Speaking of new things, we recently found one Burrito seems to absolutely love now: KONG Zoo! A gigantic Kong!

With Burrito still recovering from his recent incident, we decided to give him two of his favorite new thing he was introduced to before the incident. When he has these, he can be found dragging them along with him, throwing them up in the air, rolling them along, and bouncing on them like a hopper ball.

Here are some of the photos I took when he first got a hold of the gigantoids before the incident:

Jamie also seemed to really like them when they were first introduced.

As posted yesterday, the introduction process between Rayne and her group, and Mave and hers has begun. And please bear with us through this process as they can make for a long day. As mentioned in yesterday’s post, we will most likely just be sharing some highlights of the process. We try to get photos and video if we can, but it’s important to give them the space they need to try to form a relationship without our interference or distraction.

The highlight for today was Mave met Rayne today.

They spent a lot of time grooming one another and reassuring each other when the neighbors were rowdy. Similar to yesterday’s meeting with Terry, Rayne didn’t seem to want to leave Mave, and Mave didn’t seem to want to leave Rayne when we thought they were ready to move on, so we gave them some more time until we knew they were ready. Overall it was a very positive meeting between the two.

Mave also met Cy today as well. Cy spent a lot of time grooming Mave and trying to get her to play with him. Just as with Terry, Mave was a tad hesitant to play with the big guy at first, though she did. But her preference was grooming, which Cy obliged. Overall a positive meeting between them as well.

After their meeting, Cy went back to perusing through his magazines.

It was an eventful day for all, so I hope you all have a great night!

Photo Dump

July 29, 2021 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Finding a theme for each day’s blog tends to really get to us after all the cleaning is done so by 1pm our minds are mostly just scattering to find good content. I don’t know if it’s the increasing heat that is expected to hit triple digits again during the next couple of days, but my brain did not cooperate to give me a magnificent story line for today. Because of this, I took the liberty of introducing photo dumps to the blog. These have been increasing in popularity on different social media forums, where people gather sometimes random or not so random photos, and cluster them into one single post with a caption as simple as “Photo dump” and maybe some random emoji to match the theme…if there is any. Usually, there is no specific sequence of events for these and they end up being a series of good photos that are otherwise using up space in the phone or camera memory and that should not go to waste. From selfies to scenic photos, they can include just about anything. I would love to spam all of you the million selfies I have unashamedly taken over the past months that have yet to see the light of day, but I’m hoping some chimp and bovine photos would suffice.

Jamie’s table for one

Negra’s morning nest

Rayne LOVED the movie tickets enrichment that they got today in the Mezzanine. I later saw her tangled in the tickets while unraveling more, sadly I was not able to capture the moment. But just imagine her laying down covered in movie tickets like a bride-to-be in her bachelorette party with a dress made of toilet paper, or a TP mummy, whatever is easier for you. It was just great.

I later saw Rayne nesting with the remains of the ticket stubs she was tangled in

Sweet sweet Dora during her afternoon resting time

Foxie with her doll looking inside the Green House to see if any friends would come out as well

A Gordito side eye <3

Honey, as beautiful as always

And then we have here a handsome Nutmeg

Jamie’s Day

July 21, 2021 by Kelsi

Let’s be honest, everyday is Jamie’s day. But today, Jamie had no problem stopping us from whatever we were doing to help her. Don’t tell Jamie, but we love doing this. It’s the best when Jamie gestures for something in particular and you know exactly what she wants. It’s a great feeling to be able to give her exactly what she had in mind. For example, when she gestures for a specific boot or book. She will nod her head for the one she wants and then once you hand it to her she makes the low groan of excitement. That is the best. So all day felt like Jamie’s day because she had a belly full of raspberries, walks around Young’s Hill, naps, groomed with friends, and most importantly Jamie got to tell us exactly what she wanted all day.

Jamie is her amazing nest. Jamie was modifying blankets to help weave her blankets through the caging, there were book pages included in her nest, and a cardboard box. Not to mention she has a boot close to her while she reads a magazine. I think tucked under her chin is a boot page from one of her many boot books.

I can’t take credit for this photo because Chad took it yesterday, but it needs to be shared. Jamie deep asleep on a boot.

So on Friday Gordo seemed to be coming out of his shell a little bit. I thought this also needed to be shared. Gordo in a BOX!

We have some more birthdays coming up soon so keep check up on our wish list! Also, check out our new Wildlife ToyBox wish list too!

Jody wadging a cattail

July 17, 2021 by Diana

This video (above) reminded me of someone eating a corn dog at a ball game, though I don’t really go to ball games and I have no idea if they still have corn dogs.

In any case, Jody definitely was enjoying her cattail wadge while keeping an eye on the neighbors today.

For more on wadging, check out this blog post from Anna from a few years ago or this one, also from Anna, with some photos of Jody wadging pineapple skin.

Today is the first day of sending out the blog to both the old and the new lists of subscribers. If you are new to the blog, welcome!!

The Light Reading Chronicles Continue

July 6, 2021 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Yesterday, fellow caregiver Anthony gave us great insight on the history of magazines and provided some amazing pictures AND a video of Sir Cy enjoying one of them. Today has been no different for Cy. While all the other chimps in his group were resting or perched in the top platforms of the green houses, Cy has been carrying around the same magazine since 11AM. We give them so many to choose from that I found very interesting how much this one magazine has caught his attention today. He would move from enclosure to enclosure with the same one. I managed to get him on camera skimming through it with such intensity in his eyes while hanging out in the second level of their play room. The magazine of the day was not about famous artists or gossip, but about food! As a highly food motivated person, I can say his content of choice today is on point. Great choice, Cy!

Here he is holding his magazine pick of the day in one of their green houses.

He then brought it back inside to the play room. Look how concentrated he is, I bet there’s a really good recipe on that page. My current goal is to retrieve said recipe, once he is done with it, of course!

Dora, forever a huge fan of the platforms in their green houses.

Gordo was all about his feet while perched on one of the platforms.

EXTRA: A beautiful Rayne spotted standing on one of the barrels, she was probably on some sort of undercover mission.
