It’s B’s World, We’re Just Livin’ in It!

June 18, 2024 by Kelsi

Honey B has a whole lot of personality! You will often hear us refer to Honey B as a busy body, spunky, spontaneous, or mischievous. You never quite know what she is up to, even when you try to follow her on the cameras. It’s hard to keep up with her, always on the move or inspecting something. Though her moods change all throughout the hours, boring is never how I would describe her day. The other morning I found her greeting every single person in her group. It felt like she was doing crowd work as a politician, even Gordo received a very warm greeting from her! While she schmoozed the crowd, some of her group mates looked confused and tensed for a moment when she nudged or touched their shoulder, but as Honey gave them a breathy greeting, they were not going to question her behavior! Later, there was some displaying, so she joined in and screamed at all the boys, screaming and chasing Cy and Terry but later she was found laughing and playing with both of them.

In the afternoon, everyone received peanut butter magazines. Gordo got his and Honey B decided to join him out on the Bray and watch him do his afternoon enrichment. When we looked over at Gordo he seemed very hesitant that Honey B was following him outside, but he just pretend like she always did this. Eventually, Honey B left to get her own and you could tell Gordo took a big exhale :).

Just now, as caregiver Sabrina passed out kongs, Honey B was breathy panting and so excited, but as soon has Willy B came up to her she gave him a threatening look that seemed to warn “grab these and see what happens to you” like of look. Which personally, I would never want to experience! Though Honey B might keep us on our toes, she is a lot of fun to be around, and I wouldn’t have it any other way :).

Cooperative Veterinary Care: Rayne’s X-Ray

June 17, 2024 by J.B.

As avid CSNW blog readers know well, most veterinary procedures for chimpanzees are traditionally carried out while they are under anesthesia, and we don’t like do anesthetize any more than we have to. So we, along with many of our colleagues, try to find ways for chimps to willingly cooperate in their own care. That can take the form of positive reinforcement training, the use of specialized devices for diagnostics and treatment, or, in some cases, both. Take a peek at our team snapping some x-rays of Rayne’s finger in an effort to rule out a fracture and direct the course of treatment.

Phantom Nesting and Coconut Cracking

June 16, 2024 by Diana

I hope you enjoy the video above and think about the different ways that primates (including human primates) learn.

I was searching for other blog posts where we talked about phantom nesting and found this video from way back in 2010 that shows Burrito and Foxie phantom nesting. It goes with this blog post, which includes some interesting comments. Anecdotally, I’ve talked with a caregivers at another sanctuary who said that they see phantom nesting mostly in chimpanzees who came from the same laboratory where Foxie was born.

I find the phantom nesting fascinating, but also incredibly sad, so I thought I’d lighten the mood a bit with the coconut cracking.

Speaking of lightening the mood, one reason this blog post is a bit tardy is because I was tuned into the end of the Sweet 16 Online Auction. There were so many items in Bid Wars! To add to the excitement, there was an anonymous donor who put us well over our goal with a super generous donation to “top things off” as she said.

I am so grateful for all of the incredibly talented artists who donated items for this auction and to everyone who participated in the auction by bidding and donating. Big congratulations to the winners. I’ll be in touch about getting your art to you!!

Joe is so cool!

June 16, 2024 by Katelyn

Thank you so much to Meg Casey for sponsoring this day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in honor of Joe Casey!

“Happy Birthday Joe! Enjoy the chimps antics today and time with your feline friends! Thank you for always being dedicated to our family and supporting me throughout the years. I have so many memories of beach trips, basketball games, and everything!”

All of us here at the sanctuary hope it’s your best birthday yet, Joe! Thank you for celebrating with the chimpanzees!

A Day of Distractions

June 15, 2024 by Sabrina

Today there were a lot of distractions and side quests that left me short on time for making a well edited blog, so for today’s blog you can check out the short video for footage of our biggest distraction, along with some Burrito shenanigans and check out some bonus photos below!

Lucky enjoying the sights up near the top of the Bray

One of my new favorite photos: Lucky observing the cattle from her comfortable perch on the Bray

We also have a surplus of photos of handsome Gordo enjoying the lunch forage during the Jubilee a couple days ago so I wanted to make sure they got shared!

Don’t forget about our online Sweet Sixteen auction which ends tomorrow at 5pm PT! You still have time to bid on the amazing art pieces that are up for grabs including, my personal favorite, this fun little watercolor “Chipotle Burrito!” which was donated by Megan Senate and features our endearing, fun loving Burrito chimpanzee eating a Chipotle burrito

You can check this painting out as well as all the other amazing paintings, ceramics, photographs, etc here!

Trifecta Jubilee Part 2!

June 14, 2024 by Jenna

Yesterday was a huge day at CSNW! Not only was it the 16th anniversary of the Cle Elum 7 (first group of chimps) arriving at sanctuary, but it was also Terry’s 35th and Negra’s 51st birthday! If you haven’t already watched yesterday’s blog video of the festivities, check it out here. There was so much unused footage from yesterday, that today I am sharing another video made up of yesterday’s celebrations. Enjoy!

Don’t forget – our fully online Sweet 16 auction concludes this weekend (the 16th at 5pm PT)! We are only 1/3 of the way to our goal of $30,000 so we really could use your help! There are so many art pieces and other items that are worth bidding on. Check it out here!

One of my favorite items is the ceramic trolls! The purple one would be perfect as a planter (it’s the size of a real troll doll) and the blue one is teeeny tiny (not Terry) and would be the perfect addition to any bookshelf or table. Every time you look at your ceramic Troll doll, you can be reminded of our dear friend, Foxie. If Foxie could bid on things, you know it would be for these guys!

Send Love to the Caregivers

June 14, 2024 by Diana

Today is Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day, a day co-founded by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) & the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA), as a way to celebrate and recognize the contributions of animal caregivers to the sanctuary field.

You know how amazing the staff and volunteer caregivers are at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. You know they are some of the most big-hearted, hard working people out there. They take their jobs seriously and put everything  into providing for the chimpanzees and bovines.

Their hard work and the results of that work are shared every day through this blog for you to get a glimpse into what sanctuary life is all about.

For this year’s Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day, I once again invite you to share your thoughts about the staff and volunteer caregivers and the work they do in the comments. Let’s hear it for the caregivers!

staff caregiver Katelyn with Foxie
staff caregiver Anna preparing morning medication for the chimps
staff caregiver Kelsi placing a lunch forage up high on Young’s Hill
staff caregiver Chad playing with Burrito
staff caregiver Grace helping with Terry’s tooth extraction in the clinic
staff caregiver Jenna kissing Lucky through a window
staff caregivers Sabrina and Krissy serving Jamie’s group together
staff caregiver Ellen loving on Meredith
volunteer caregiver and occasional fill-in staff caregiver Dusty wrapping presents for the chimps

And a huge shout-out to all of the volunteers, who play various important caregiving roles. If you are interested in volunteering, visit our volunteer page!

P.S. The Sweet 16 Online Auction features a painting, Spring Rayne, by staff caregiver Ellen! Bid on it to celebrate all caregivers and the many talents they bring to our world!
