A VERY Special Message

September 2, 2020 by Diana

Bidding for HOOT! 2020 opened this morning! If your breath stops for a minute and then your eyes water a little watching the video above, I get it – the same thing happened to me.

Jane Goodall has always been a voice for HOPE even when sharing the desperate reality of what chimpanzees face in captivity and as a species in the wild.

Hope for the future, with a plan to help, is what the chimpanzees and the whole world needs right now, so I hope you will join Dr. Goodall in her support of HOOT! as we work to help more chimpanzees and care for the ten already at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.

Bidding ends during the virtual event on September 12th. Auction items are still being added over the next few days, so visit frequently. You can still enter the pant-hoot contest and register for the virtual happy hour too!

Big thanks to Dr. Jane Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute for making and sending us that video.

And big thanks to all HOOT! 2020 Sponsors, including:

Mave continues to be marvelous

May 23, 2020 by Diana

What with Willy B venturing outside and Honey B really loosening up to be the unique and silly chimpanzee she is, perhaps we haven’t been highlighting Mave as much as the other two members of her trio lately.

Have no doubts, Mave continues to be marvelous.

We will be celebrating Honey B’s birthday on June 11th and Queen Negra’s on June 13th as part of The Queen’s Brunch virtual celebration and online auction.

I should pause here to mention that you should all go register (or log in if you’ve participated in past online auctions) RIGHT NOW to receive updates about the event.

I’ve just begun adding items to the site, including this original 16″ x 16″ oil painting of the one and only Mave by the one and only Margaret Parkinson!

More items will be uploaded in the coming weeks. You can pre-buy a VIP Party Box today with a chance to win something special, so definitely check that out!

Ok, back to Mave. We will be celebrating her birthday this Wednesday (May 27th)! This will be her first birthday at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, and we can’t wait to honor her.

Speaking of honor, here are some photos that Mave allowed me to take of her today:

Soaking up the sun

August 31, 2018 by J.B.

Jody was so eager to go out on to the hill this morning that she took off before finishing her breakfast.

I am always hesitant to read too much into the chimps’ behavior, but I really do believe that Jody has a renewed appreciation for Young’s Hill this week after having been restricted to the indoors for a few days during her recovery.

She later came back for her chow bag and sat at the entrance to the hill, savoring each bite while basking in the warm sun.

While Jody’s eye still has some healing to do, Dr. Zamzow and our team of veterinary advisors are happy with the progress.

On another topic, here’s something I found interesting: This morning I discovered what can only be Jamie’s handiwork – a piece of blanket tied with a double knot to the caging. Jamie often secures her nests to the caging by threading the blankets through the mesh and she is well known for her knot-tying abilities (most likely learned when she was a youngster living with humans in the entertainment industry). Either this was meant to be the foundation of an incredibly stable and secure nest, or Jamie has started creating enrichment puzzles for the caregivers.

And in other news, have you checked out our Summer Biddin’ Online Auction yet? Your bids and donations will help us care for seven amazing chimps, support the expansion of the sanctuary so that we can take in even more chimps, and aid in the construction of fencing and a new barn for the five cows that will soon call the sanctuary home.

The other day I was repairing fencing on the View Property when this doe approached to politely inquire as to why I was in her barn. This area will be part of the winter pasture for Whitaker, Betsy, Nutmeg, Honey, and Meredith. Isn’t it incredible? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for both cows and deer.

The online auction is going on now and ends Monday at 7pm Pacific – check it out now before it’s too late!

MISSY on the 6th Day of HOOT!

April 29, 2016 by J.B.

Since we are racing around getting ready for tomorrow, Missy seemed the perfect choice to acknowledge the eve of the HOOT! 2016 gala.

Missy with Hoot! logo

When Young’s Hill was first opened, we described Missy as “a spring that was coiled up for decades, just waiting to be released.” She embodies the idea that sanctuary is not just a place of comfort and safety, but also a place of opportunity. When Missy finally had the opportunity to run, she seized it and did not let go.

In rare moments of stillness, which could easily be misinterpreted as resting or recuperating, Missy is in fact plotting her next adventure. Her eyes survey the landscape for the next hill to climb or the next tightrope to walk. Thirty years in a cage is a long time…too long to ever let an opportunity go to waste.

We’re so excited about the opportunities before us this year, and we intend to move forward with every bit as much determination as Missy. Tomorrow at Hoot!, we will raise funds for the next phase of Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest so that more chimpanzees can call this sanctuary home.

As chimpanzee research comes to an end, let us ensure that every chimpanzee can finally feel the joy that Missy has discovered.

FOXIE for the 2nd Day of HOOT! & Wild Chimpanzees with Doll Rocks

April 25, 2016 by Diana

We were all so touched by the incredible Sponsor-a-Day posted from Megan and her husband earlier today in memory of Baby H.

So, it seems appropriate to make today about celebrating Foxie. A video came up in my news feed on Facebook that is also Foxie-related. It is a short interview with Dr. Richard Wrangham and a fascinating look at juvenile chimpanzees in the wild who seem to be treating rocks as dolls.

Here’s a link to the video: http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160422-the-young-chimpanzees-that-play-with-dolls

Does this seem like a doll-loving chimpanzee you know?

Because we are counting down to HOOT!, I’m sharing this image that will be one of just seven exclusive metal prints that can be bid on during the Happy Hour reception at the event on Saturday (minus the HOOT! logo):

Wondering what else will be happening during the Happy Hour? So much! Each guest will receive two drink tickets good for beer, wine, or two custom cocktails (delicious non-alcoholic punch is also available). And everyone can give with their hearts at the Hope, Love, and Home stations staffed by the best friends of the Cle Elum Seven – the sanctuary staff. Guests can ask questions, learn more about the chimps, and contribute directly to the area of care that speaks to them the most while earning a heart to personalize and add to the Heart Board.

Today’s countdown to the celebration of the year, just days away, is thanks to chimpanzee friends Tracy Headley and Poppoff Inc who are Happy Hour sponsors for HOOT!

I am getting so very excited about the event this year, I might just do some pirouettes and spinning today in honor of Foxie.

Biddin’ Bliss!

September 2, 2015 by Diana

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Summer Biddin’ online-only auction! Those who donated items, made cash donations for Summer Lovin‘, and bid, bid, and then bid some more (even if you didn’t win), came together to raise $27,000 for the chimpanzees – and that was with an initial goal of raising $14,000!!

You all inspire me so much! It makes me happy to know that there are people out there who put their hearts into helping the chimpanzees at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest and are so good at having fun while doing it!

Pant hoots to you!

Portraits Added to Online Auction

September 1, 2014 by Diana

I’ve just added a few more awesome items to the Summer Biddin’ Online Auction!

I couldn’t let it go without having a portrait of each of the chimpanzees available for bidding on, could I? The photos are being printed on metal, which gives them a really neat luminescent quality that I know everyone will love.

So, don’t delay in getting your bids in on the below items and all the other items too, and don’t forget to give a little towards the Summer Lovin’ party too!

Bidding ends at 7:00pm PT unless an item goes in to a Bid War. Be sure to watch – it’s going to be fun to see which items continue to get bids after the closing time!

Thanks to everyone who made the Summer Biddin’ Online Auction possible and to everyone who is participating! The chimpanzees really appreciate your support!
