Why HOOT!?

May 19, 2026 by Diana 7 Comments

If you are on our physical mailing list, you should have received a Save the Date announcement for HOOT! 2026 in the last week or so.

All the information contained in the postcard about this exciting event is below. But first, I thought I’d talk about the name HOOT!

For those who may not know, chimpanzees make a vocalization called a pant-hoot, often when they are excited. With lips trumpeted, they vocalize on both the inhale and the exhale, building to a crescendo that ends in a scream. It’s really their signature vocalization, and pant-hoots tend to be contagious. Here’s a throwback video from 2011 with a montage of pant-hoots from Negra, Jamie, and Foxie.

That’s why our signature event has the name HOOT! and why Co-Director J.B. traditionally kicks things off by leading a pant-hoot at the beginning of the event.

So, start practicing now!

It contained this basic information:

HOOT! is coming to you on Friday, October 2, 2026 and we want you there whether you’re joining in person in Seattle or tuning in from your living room.

Get full event details, purchase tickets, and RSVP now here: hoot2026.afrogs.org

Join us in one of two ways:

TOGETHER AT BLOCK 41

115 Bell St, Seattle, WA

Doors open at 5PM | Program begins at 6:30PM

Tickets required to attend. hoot2026.afrogs.org

TOGETHER ONLINE

Broadcast begins at 6:30PM Pacific

Free to RSVP and tune in from home. hoot2026.afrogs.org

Whether you’re joining us in person or tuning in from home, HOOT! is your invitation to celebrate the community that keeps Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest thriving.

Let’s HOOT! together!

WE WANT YOUR INPUT!

This year, YOU get to help choose which chimpanzee will be featured on the sweater for the raffle drawing. Vote here: bit.ly/csnwpoll

Big thanks to Kathleen Corby for designing the logo and materials for HOOT! once again this year! Pant-hoots to Kathleen!

The design came from a photo of George that I took that was not a technically good photo at all.

But it turned into a great design! I just love George’s profile while pant-hooting. I think it captures his excitement and the promise of things to come at the event. I hope you all can join us!

Shared Experiences

August 24, 2025 by Diana

I had a moment last week.

It was the first time that Jamie’s group was in their outdoor habitat, Young’s Hill, while George had access the other habitat, the Bray.

J.B. shared a video on Monday in his blog post.

I was in the human corridor in between the habitats. Missy and Foxie began walking along the fence where I was standing as George ran outside. I was thinking about Foxie having just turned 49 and Missy’s 5oth in just a few days.

I was thinking about the last seventeen years we’ve spent together and all of the experiences we’ve shared. Together, we’ve gone through the same things that I’ve gone through with human friends and family. There have been days of worry and days of pure elation. There have been some scary times when we’ve done our best to comfort and reassure each other. We’ve faced a lot of uncertainty together, and many, many laughs. We’ve even been together in times of shared grief.

That moment, as I walked with them, we were experiencing something new once again as, George, a chimpanzee they weren’t familiar with, watched them from the other habitat. Foxie held out her hand to ask for reassurance and I held mine out to her and nodded my head. I told her it was okay and George was a nice guy. She seemed reassured and continued up the hill. Missy was calm and brave and curious. And the three of us continued walking together, as old friends.

I glanced back at George and thought about how everything is so new to him. I contemplated the experiences that we’ve already shared together and thought about the amazing experiences and the change and growth that’s ahead for us both. For us all.

I would like to share an experience with all of you reading. For those who are able, I really want to see you at HOOT! 2025 in Seattle! We’ll be sharing more about George’s story and you’ll leave with an even more profound understanding of the sanctuary and the chimpanzees. Get your tickets right now!

You really do want to come in person if you are able, so you can share the experience with a room full of wonderful people. But, if you really can’t make it in person, definitely RSVP today for online viewing and participation.

I’ll leave you with a few photos taken by staff yesterday during Missy’s 5oth celebration.

It Takes a Village

September 9, 2023 by Jenna

Today is the perfect day to express gratitude for everyone who helps Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest be the organization it is. I have been thinking about this a lot lately… how many people love the chimps near and far.

We have directors who have dedicated their entire lives to the chimps. We have staff who have moved across the country, away from their families, to work with the chimps. We have volunteers that help caregivers clean multiple times a week. We have volunteers that help us keep up with the endless amounts of laundry, that organize our kitchen so the caregivers have more time to spend with the chimps, and/or come and fill 100+ chow bags. We have donors who drop off a bag of peanuts and a bag of magazines consistently, without saying a word. We have online supporters that comment on our blog and social media every single day. We have supporters who buy something off of our Amazon Wishlist every week. This list goes on and on, truly.

There are so many little things that help us be hugely successful. Thank you so much for helping us care for the chimps! Thank you to all the volunteers for doing what you do. Thank you to my co-workers for caring for the chimps day-in and day-out.

We wouldn’t be able to do it without each and every one of you. Thank you for the never-ending support for CSNW.

Tonight is HOOT 2023, our biggest fundraising event of the year! If you are unable to join us in Seattle, you can join us virtually for free! Please secure your spot here and join in on the fun! Don’t miss it!

HOOT! Excitement

July 31, 2023 by Diana

As you can see in today’s video, Jamie loved her HOOT! shoe book from 321 Foto!

And YOU are going to love this year’s HOOT! Fundraising Soirée and Mission Fair!

The event committee has cooked up fun and informative activities plus giveaways (like the tote bag below) for in-person guests.

There will also be appetizers a-plenty at the Sodo Park event in Seattle on September 9th.

If you are in the area, you will definitely want to attend in person event for all the goodies and to connect with fellow supporters, but this year we are putting a lot into the live streaming for virtual attendees at a distance who will be able to watch our HOOT! videos, hear from J.B. and myself, and donate in real time during the paddle raise.

We reduced the price of the event to make it more accessible to more people, and there’s just one week left at the early bird ticket price, so get your tickets now or reserve your virtual spot if you haven’t already!

Thanks to Concord Construction for being the HOOT! 2023 Soirée sponsor!

Thanks also to Martha Faulkner Real Estate for her booth sponsorship

and to Kathleen Corby for all of her graphic design work and problem-solving.

Look at these photographs

May 19, 2023 by Jenna

Today has been a busy, busy day in the chimp house! I managed to get some photos today and hope you enjoy them!

Cy:

Foxie was out on Young’s Hill this afternoon when it started raining. Her and her Blueberry doll hurried in.

I tried to be artistic here taking a photo of Honey B behind the leaves that frame the chute.

Lucky:

Mave (let’s ignore the troll mask in the background nearly ruining the photo):

This Life of Fortune

July 29, 2022 by Diana

Two fundraising updates and a story about our bovine friends today.

First, yesterday alert blog readers took it upon themselves to start a group fundraiser for a much-desired, literally named “Big Ass Fan” evaporative cooler. Right now we have $895 pledged towards the $1,899 cost of the fan, with $1,004 left to raise. I myself have pledged $100 and have been having pleasant visions of receiving that cooler.

If you would like to participate, you can email me ([email protected]) and let me know your pledge amount. Donations towards the fan can be made online on our donation page (just specify in the gift note section it’s for the cooler), or you can mail a check to the sanctuary at PO Box 952, Cle Elum, WA 98922. You can donate now or pledge first and donate once I let you know that the total has been reached. Thank you all so much!!

Second, counting today, there are only three days left to take advantage of Early Bird pricing for the HOOT! gala! The gala is a pretty big deal in terms of fundraising but also in terms of connecting with supporters. We are hoping to see many familiar and new faces in-person in Seattle on September 16th!

For those not in this area or otherwise unable to attend the fundraising fête, you can still participate! We’ll be having an online auction open to anyone, and for those who buy a virtual VIP ticket for just $20, you will also receive a special invitation to an exclusive Zoom tour of the sanctuary to take place on Sunday, September 11th at 2pm.

A big shout-out goes to our sponsors of HOOT! 2022. Numerous individuals are now sponsors in addition to generous Gala Sponsor Concord Construction. What would we have done without them these last few years with all of the expansion!! We are so grateful to have worked and continue to work with them to expand the lives of the chimpanzees and beyond honored to have their sponsorship for the gala.

Also a big thanks to Happy Hour sponsor Martha Faulkner Real Estate. Martha was a very helpful board member for years and is an all-around animal lover, giving part of her commission to multiple animal groups through her business, hence her website: homes4petlovers.com.

If you are interesting in sponsoring as a business or an individual, you can do that directly here or if you’d like more information, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Third, it’s hot, ya’ll.

Today was my day to do “cattle care”. In the winter, that means giving our four bovine friends hay, mucking out the barn, and making sure there is an ample supply of water.

In the early summer they are able to free-feed in the pastures, helping us with fire control, so we don’t need (yet) to supplement their food. They aren’t spending as much time in the barn, so there’s less mucking to do, though we do try to pick up in areas where they congregate to keep the fly population under some control.

With the addition of the large pasture on the property above the original sanctuary property this year, you just never know where you are going to find the cows.

Today, I couldn’t find them at all.

They weren’t at the barn, where I stopped to make sure the water trough was full.

And they weren’t in the pasture by the pond, where I have been finding them on most Fridays since they’ve been given access over a month ago.

I followed their well-worn path down towards the spring, and found them doing exactly what they should be doing in 100+ degree weather, hanging out in the shade, ready to stare me down.

But wait, where was Betsy?

Seriously, where was Betsy? I called her name. No response. I called louder. Still nothing.

Despite my best efforts at self-mind-control, I can be prone towards thinking the worst and I was starting to get nervous. Betsy is not usually away from her herd.

I walked further down the path adjacent to the spring. Ahhhh. There she was.

In the patch of lush greenery at the edge of the spring.

She too was keeping cool right near the water.

On my way back across the property, I spied another mom laying low in some shade.

It makes me so happy that Betsy, Meredith, Honey, and Nutmeg can, like momma deer, follow their instincts and choose the smartest spot to be on the property.

They are no longer beholden to the humans making all decisions for them or viewing them as a means to their own ends. They are residents of this land. Not as unlikely as the chimpanzee residents across the way, but, like the chimps, while not free, definitely freer than many of their species who have been forced into a life of servitude.

By luck or by fate (if you believe in that kind of thing), we get to be a part of their lives.

Celebrate this gift with us by participating in HOOT!, online or in-person. We have a lot to celebrate!

See you soon at HOOT!

September 12, 2020 by Diana

It’s a very smoky day at the sanctuary. We are thinking of all of those impacted by the fires all over the northwest right now.

We are thankful for so much, including Burrito’s continued recovery. Today he got to spend some time with Jody!

We are also extremely thankful for you, the generous and caring supporters of the sanctuary.

We hope you will ALL join us, even if you are not in a position right now to donate or bid on items, for the Virtual HOOT! gala tonight, starting in just a few hours at 6:00pm PT.

Anyone can watch, either on Facebook or on the auction home page.

If you signed up for the Happy Hour, you’ll be seeing the chimpanzees in real time very soon as they have their non-alcoholic version of the pant-hootch specialty drink.

Cheers to you and cheers to hope for the future!
