Past the wetlands, up the mountain, across the stream, between the scary gates, and through the forest to the upper pasture we go! It’s time once again for the cows to head to their summer pastures. And this year, they’re exploring a new part of the sanctuary’s 90-acre property.
As you may know, the cows actually moved a few weeks ago but I’ve only now gotten the chance to put a video together. They’ve really been enjoying the upper pond pasture and most nights they don’t even return to the barn.
We’d like to express our gratitude for your kind and generous comments on yesterday’s blog about Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day. Diana and I, along with the Board of Directors, are grateful for the staff every day but you all have expressed our sentiments better than we ever could. Though we will be getting them food next week and it turns out you can actually say a lot with food.
Speaking of caregivers, we’d like to introduce you to our newest staff member, Jenna! Jenna interned at CSNW while attending Central Washington University and then gained valuable experience at other chimpanzee sanctuaries before returning to the northwest. I’ll let her more fully introduce herself next week in her first CSNW blog post.
Here’s Jenna getting in good with the boss:

The chimps are amazing and I am especially fond of those handsome guys Burrto, Willy and Cy. But this ole farm gal is crazy about the cattle. Seeing them romp in the green pastue is good for my heart!
Caroline says
I love the cows, they are so gentle and precious! I would love to run with them, or better yet, just walk the fields with them!
I hope Negra and Jaimie are doing well
Deanna says
OMG!! Loved seeing them romp around!!! Such happy cows!!!
Marcie says
Lucky bovine, living the life in a peaceful and beautiful piece of land as it should be for them.
Kim Harris says

CeeCee says
what a great Video! they’re so happy:revolving_hearts:
Welcome Jenna, It looks like you have Jamie approval!
Kathleen says
Wow! What a bucolic setting. The 4th annual running of the cows did not disappoint — the best ever! The moment they realize all that land and the pond is theirs and they run and romp. (I think I heard Nutmeg say “Yippee!”) That photo of Diana nose to nose is magnificent.
And since today is officially Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day, I’d like to thank you, J.B., for all you do. All the planning, expanding, constructing, and containing. Thanks to you the sanctuary has sheds, fencing, structures, wooden walkways, bridges, and yes, scary gates. It’s amazing how far the sanctuary has come. Thank you for caring for sixteen chimpanzees, three cows and one steer, and the land. All that beautiful land…
Kathleen says
Oh no, I forgot to say HELLO to the newest caregiver Jenna. Welcome! Looking forward to getting to know you and your perspective on everything sanctuary. Smart move getting in good with the boss. (wink, wink)
Tobin says
Welcome to CSNW, Jenna. As you may have learned, Jamie has a particular interest (and some exacting standards) concerning the condition of her employee’s footwear.
Ahhh…another beautiful video to behold the Crew of Moo. I recall from last April a blogpost where the Queen issued a Royal Decree to a coyote who had wandered onto the summer pasture. “We are not amused (or hoots to that effect), Negra interrupted her picnic lunch to advise the unwelcome guest to vacate the sanctuary premises. It appears that Neggie’s remonstrance is still in effect, and Nutmeg and Co. can kick up their hooves in their summer retreat. And as demonstrated in one of the photographs, Meredith (or it that Betsy?) proves beyond a reasonable doubt that she “nose” a good human friend and neighbor in Diana.

Nice to watch the “running of the cows” video whilst drinking my morning coffee. Beatiful piece of property you have there. Must be a pleasure driving in to work.
Pat F. says
Loved the video of the cows moving to their summer home. It was a beautiful film for the cows to take center stage.

Hey J.B.
Just to be clear on the subject of gratitude……
All that has been written about the caregivers includes you and Diana !!!!! ( I am not sure you got that 😉 ).
Without you two the sanctuary would not be the home it is, I am sure of it.
So thank you, thank you, thank you to you too !!!!
Love the running of the cows and steer, they look fantasticly healthy and happy and Oh, to be kissed by a wet nose like that; You are a lucky woman Diana.
Marya says
Thank you, JB, for this wonderful video!! I think Kathleen called it bucolic and I’d agree about the gorgeous surroundings the bovines have as their own sanctuary. I just had to laugh out loud at the group’s enthusiasm and perkiness in the move (once you got them going!). I could just imagine them all saying “Wheeeee!!!!” And I must agree with others about that photo of Diana and “the nose” — I now have that photo on my phone so I can look at it (among the many others from the sanctuary) whenever I need a little pick-me-up to remind me of the finer things in life. Such bliss on her face and on mine when I look at it…
Paulette says
Wow! what a gorgeous property!!! The pic with the pond midway between lush green grass and high mountains. Stunning.
Betsy. Nary a single wayward nose hair!:joy: she is perfection isn’t she? Don’t anyone come near my nose with a camera. Yikes!
Jenna, welcome! How is your mask attached to your headband?
