Burrito

And the party continues

April 13, 2009 by Diana

Here are a few still shots from yesterday

I had to take one “before” shot of the cornbread peeps and the Passover Harrosset on Matzah (hope I got that right!). We really can’t thank the volunteers and supporters enough for making Easter, and everyday, such a treat for the Cle Elum Seven and the CSNW staff too!

One of the many, many things that I like about chimps is they like what they like – they aren’t as influenced by human hang-ups and ideas about what’s “snack” food and what’s “just a vegetable”. Thanks to a donation from a far, we bought some fresh produce Easter morning that the chimps don’t get frequently – cucumbers, green onions, sweet potatoes and coconuts. Jody and Missy were competing for who could grab as many green onions as they could.

And here is a man and his treasured coconut

The party seemed to be still going on this morning… Foxie was eating a coconut when we arrived (quite happily), and Missy and Annie did not even consider coming in for breakfast. After breakfast, Jamie donned an Easter bonnet (or perhaps more of a Spring gardening hat) briefly:

Grooming

Burrito and Foxie were sleeping next to each other on the catwalk when Negra decided she wanted to be groomed. Burrito was happy to oblige:

Burrito grooming Negra

Business as usual

February 1, 2009 by J.B.

You’ll be glad to know that everyone is doing well, and although the chimpanzees are still trying to figure out where things stand after the fight, for the most part its business as usual around here.

This morning, Jamie kept herself occupied by playing with towels and water bottles (the loud noise you hear in the video is from Foxie hitting one of her trolls with a spoon!). She’s somehow always busy, and you can see how serious she is when she’s engaged in one of her many tasks, like pouring water from one bottle to another:

In the afternoon, Jamie, Foxie and Missy played outdoors. Foxie, of course, brought her trolls:

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

January 11, 2009 by Diana

J.B. hung the mirror today in the playroom that the blog/forum participants purchased for the Cle Elum Seven. The chimpanzees love it! Jamie was pretty intent on figuring out how to remove it from the wall, so J.B. put a frame around it at the end of the day. Below is a video and photos of their first inspections and reflections.

Burrito and Negra

January 9, 2009 by J.B.

Burrito and Negra have an interesting relationship. She seems genuinely afraid of him at times and will hide in the front rooms when he is displaying. And if there is excitement in the group, she will give him a huge submissive greeting (she will grunt loudly and present her rear end to him) as if to say “don’t take it out on me, please!”

But they also spend a lot of time grooming together, and once and a while Burrito can get Negra to laugh. Of course, he has to play Negra-style (calmly and slowly, laying down if possible), which is a stretch for Burrito. Take a look (FYI – the hissing sound you hear is me moving the pneumatic doors to let the chimps in for lunch):
