birthday

in memory of Jody Chimpanzee on her birthday

May 14, 2023 by Diana

Tobin sponsored today in honor of Jody’s birthday celebration prior to us losing Jody just two weeks ago. Ever thoughtful, Tobin sent in a new message to share on this celebratory but also somber day,

Dear Friends of our beloved Jody:

As was the tradition at the CSNW, Jody’s birthday was celebrated every year on Mother’s Day. Those of us who loved her and rejoiced in her very being will continue to do so, in our hearts, minds, and souls. As we grieve, let us remember the look of joy on her beautifully expressive face, whether ascending the towers on Young’s Hill or in foraging the bounty of her land. Let us remember her maternal devotion to Negra, Annie, Missy, Foxie, Jamie, and Burrito. Taken from her mother in infancy, and deprived of nurturing the children she conceived, Jody became the den mother to her troop of orphans.

In my original statement for Jody’s birthday, I had written an open letter addressed to her. I told her that I hoped that the lilacs would be in bloom for her birthday, and I told her that I was so pleased when, somehow, she would appear in my dreams.

As I have read the many messages in the comments section of the Sanctuary website, I have been moved by the many words of condolence to Jody’s survivors and caregivers. One message especially holds meaning to me: “May her memory be blessed.”

Surely our memories of Jody are blessed, as we who love her were blessed by her presence in our lives.

And when I read of that Hebrew blessing, I thought of Jody and the words of a poem, also written in Hebrew:

For Thou, the Giver of Life,
created me in my inmost being;
Thou created me together
in my mother’s womb

Where can I go from Thy Spirit?

Our beloved Jody, your memory is blessed.

Cy’s 33rd Birthday Celebration

March 12, 2023 by Diana

There’s a lot of love going out to Cy today on his 33rd birthday. Thank you to everyone who sponsored the day in his honor, made donations in his name, and purchased the limited edition Cy’s book club merchandise!

Today was also the first day of Daylight Savings Time. For CSNW, that means that, while we turn the clocks back like everyone else, we keep on the same actual time schedule for the chimp house. So, expect your blog posts an hour later than “usual” (or even later if I’m writing the blog, especially if it’s a party day).

If you haven’t already, please do think of Cy this evening and wish him a happy birthday in your heart. We don’t know what we’d do without him and his leadership over the sometimes rowdy group of nine!

the more you know

February 26, 2023 by Diana

Earlier this month, Anna revealed a half-sibling pair that we were not previously aware of (see this blog post for details if you missed it, but try to guess first just for fun).

Along with that information, we learned of the actual birthdays for Willy B and Mave!

It’s possible we could have had this information before, but their medical records did not include their dates of birth and I assumed they were unknown. So, I forged ahead and chose celebrated birthdays for Mave and Willy B, like we did for Negra, Jody, Jamie, and Annie, whose birthdays are unknown to us.

If you have a CSNW calendar, or have looked at their individual pages on our website, you might know that Willy B‘s celebrated birthday is coming up on March 1st. However, now we know that his actual date of birth is November 30th (1990).

We chose May 27th to celebrate Mave‘s birthday, but now we know that her actual birthday is September 25th (1989).

So, what are we to do for their celebrations this year?

It seemed only right that this year we celebrate both Willy B and Mave’s “calendar birthdays” as well as their real birthdays. No one is going to complain about two more parties, right?!

Speaking of parties and birthdays, don’t waste any more time if you haven’t yet purchased a limited-edition Cy’s Book Club t-shirt and/or tote bag in honor of Cy‘s birthday on March 12th

Below are some classic photos of these two birthday guys, but first, a very brief story from today. After morning cleaning, Cy was clearly looking for some “reading” material. I brought out a book for him. See photo below of the book’s cover:

I knew there was a risk that Cy would find something in the pages of the book that he found alarming. What I didn’t count on was that he would fixate on the smallest photos. The inside cover of the book features very small images of other books in the series (see below). While he looked closely at those small photos he frequently let out one of his unique “scary image alarm calls.”

Willy B and Rayne immediately came to his side. Based on their reactions, the other chimpanzees in his group are as perplexed as we humans are about Cy’s reaction to certain images, but it’s nice that they want to assist or just be near him when he’s alarm calling at an image in a magazine or book.

Willy B really seems to look up to Cy (we can understand why, propensity to overreact to images aside). Here are a few photos of the two of them together:

Coming Up Next…

December 27, 2022 by Chad de Bree

Christmas may be behind us, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t planning for the next big celebration! After New Years, we have a big one: Burrito’s 40th Birthday! It’s going to be so hard to believe this Energizer Bunny of a chimpanzee is going to be 40! We are going to try to make it special for him hitting this milestone! I know we have asked a lot recently with the Comfort & Joy auction and Christmas donations, but if you could, please go to our Amazon Wish List and see if there is anything you can help out us getting to throw a 40th Birthday Bash!

Burrito with some of his favorite enrichment items; wooden blocks, slinkies, and Squishmallows!

I don’t even know where to begin describing what is happening here. We were playing, then he picked up this toy cone and started peering through it like a telescope, maybe?

I also want thank everyone who tuned in to listen to ramble on today during the virtual visit talk about enrichment! Plans are already underway for the next virtual visit talk!

Some bonus photos:

Dora pooped out after her Christmas party!

Beautiful Rayne also taking a snooze after partying!

Rayne also watching caregivers clean the Mezzanine the other day!

Negra when caregivers greeted her in the morning!

Cy thumbing through a new magazine!

Burrito loves his snowy treats!

Betsy, Nutmeg, Honey, and Meredith! The bovine are super fuzzy with their winter coats right now! (And yes, Meredith is still Miss Independent!)

Dora enjoying her cherry tomatoes at lunch!

Happy Birthday Honey Cow!

November 10, 2022 by Anna

Today our beloved Honey Cow turns 15! At CSNW, caregivers have been getting to know this sassy golden cow for the last 4 years! A very special thank you to Paulette Wrisley for sponsoring today in Honey’s honor.

Honey is easily recognized as the lightest “honey” colored member in her small herd of fellow Jersey cattle.

From front to back: Meredith, Betsy, Honey and Nutmeg:

Honey is also known for being  the sauciest member of her herd. She has no patience for the hugs we would ideally like to give her. Occasionally we can get away with a few scratches or a little brushing, but in general we respect Honey’s wishes and give her the personal space from humans she seems to appreciate. I think if Honey could plan an ideal birthday party for herself, she would like a bale of hay delivered to her barn and to be left alone with her family, and that’s just what she got today!

Here are a few of my favorite photos of Honey taken by my fellow caregivers throughout the seasons!

Jamieween 2022

October 31, 2022 by Anthony

This year’s iteration of Jamieween was a joyful success!

With the help of our amazing supporters, we caregivers prepared a feast and party to celebrate The Boss’s honorary birthday. The staff collected some video clips and photographs of the event to share with you all. Please be aware that we also recorded the highlights of the other group’s party but haven’t had time to sort through all the files yet. We hope to share additional content from today’s event very soon!

Some of the plentiful treats and toys we served and delivered to the chimps today:

Burrito:

Jamie:

Jody (with the prized pumpkin):

Jamie turned 45 years old this year, but the decades haven’t slowed her down one bit. Yesterday, for the first time in her life, she courageously shimmied her way up into the canopy of a real, living tree. This chimpanzee’s confidence, intelligence and curiosity truly know no bounds, and we’re honored to care for her in her sanctuary home.

Here are some of my favorite photos of Jamie from the past year:

Happy Birthday, Meredith!

September 23, 2022 by J.B.

Meredith turns 7 years old today! Many thanks to both Paulette and to Tobin for sponsoring this day in her honor.

Our post office has been out of commission for the last week, but we got Tobin’s letter for Meredith just in time.

Here is Tobin’s personal message to the birthday bovine:

Dear Meredith,

I wish you a happy 7th birthday. I am very glad you, your mother, your Aunty Betsy, and the Dude with the Hairdo are residents of the sanctuary.

As you may have noticed, there is some construction going on near your meadow. The humans are configuring the acreage where your chimpanzee neighbors live. In addition to Willy B (you know, the singer and drummer) and the seven who were living here (including Jody, who joins Willy and me in sponsoring you) when you moved here four years ago, there are eight new chimpanzees who have taken residence. Some of them haven’t been outside yet. It is hoped that they will finally step out into their new enclosure soon.

If you follow the CSNW blog, you’ll remember that one of these new chimps – CY – reacted with fright in seeing a photograph of Betsy and Nutmeg. I doubt that his reaction was anything personal – I would assume that Cy simply wasn’t familiar with cattle despite his copious reading habits.

Hopefully, once Cy starts exploring the outside and looks across the pasture and sees you and your herd, he’ll figure out that you are a perfect fit for your immediate surroundings, and appreciate having you as a next-door neighbor.

If, however, Cy barks or screeches out some harsh words in your direction, simply moo back to him, “So, have you read any good magazines lately?” That should resolve any conflict.

Meanwhile, I wish you a happy birthday.

from your Bovine Buds, Tobin, Jody, and Willy B

This afternoon, Diana gave the herd a little extra alfalfa to celebrate:

Here are a few other photos of the birthday girl that I’m fairly sure we haven’t posted before:

Check out that winter coat!

You can learn more about Meredith and her bovine family here. And for pictures of BABY MEREDITH (!), please visit this page from our friends at Farm Sanctuary.

And as always, you can help support the daily care of the cows and chimpanzees by ordering from our Amazon Wish List!
