The Allure of Willy B (aka William, Wilbert, or Willard)

January 16, 2024 by Grace

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that all chimp personalities are different. Each chimp has their own unique quirks, traits, and histories that have no doubt played a role in who they are today. One of the greatest joys for me, as a caregiver here, is having the opportunity to get to know each of them on their own terms.

Life in the chimp house is a busy one and a lot of our days are taken up with cleaning, enrichment / food prep, and other important tasks that have to get done every day and usually by a certain time. In between the tasks of the day, we try and find moments to hang out with the chimps- if they want to see us, that is. Sometimes, we have everything done early and have a good amount of time in the afternoon to hang out with the chimps, but they’re not feeling it and would rather hang out with each other or nap (fair). Sometimes, we have to make the tough choice of balancing time with a chimp that’s asking for attention vs. catching up on the long list of tasks. Most of the time, though, it all works out to where we are able to get everything done and make ourselves available for the chimps.

These moments, I think, are where we really get to know each other. Trust and mutual understandings can be built and solidified through serving meals and little interactions throughout the day, but I think when we set aside everything we have going on and are totally present with a chimp friend is when we get to know them and they get to know us.

Willy B, as mentioned throughout a variety of our blogs, does seem to have some anxiety that can make it tough for him to interact or engage with both other chimps and the humans. He’s really grown as a person in the last few years as his group was integrated with Cy’s group and it’s been so wonderful to see him forming bonds with the other chimps in his group, who seem to have a high level of patience for the often-awkward guy who enjoys causing intermittent chaos throughout the day.

Up until recently, most of my interactions with Willy B have been him asking to look at photos / videos on my phone, which is totally fine. The last few weeks, though, he has seemed more interactive.Yesterday we finished cleaning in the morning and the task list was looking good, so I changed out of my scrubs to head out for office time. I went in to say goodbye and immediately Willy B initiated a game of play! It was the longest I’ve ever experienced with him and I couldn’t get myself to walk away, until he signaled to me that he was wrapped up with it too.

He can be aloof and hard to read, but he can also be so funny and sweet. He’s a complex guy and it’s such a special moment when he initiates spending time together!

Willy B, also affectionately known as William, Wilbert, Willard, and / or Sir William:

Welcome Home, Meredith!

January 15, 2024 by J.B.

Last week, we caught a break in the weather and were able to bring Meredith safely back home from WSU. While she has to remain confined to a pen in the barn for a short while during her recovery, she and her herd mates are happy to be together again. Notice in the video that you can see the exact moment when Honey realizes that Meredith is back…Mom sure missed her daughter.

Despite this, Meredith may actually wish she had stayed an extra week at the hospital, as yesterday we woke up to a temperature of -12.5F, which is the coldest I can remember in my nearly 16 years here at CSNW. Despite the extreme cold, the chimps and cattle are all doing well, and we’ve only had to deal with a few equipment freeze-ups so far. As a cold-climate sanctuary, we’re pretty well prepared for winter weather but these extremes certainly put all of our preparation to the test. In a couple days, we’ll climb out of these arctic temperatures and get to enjoy a regular old snow storm.

Whatcha got on your feet?

January 14, 2024 by Diana

As demonstrated in this video, in addition to Jamie’s long-held love of boots, we can usually rely on Terry and Lucky (in the other group) to check out our footwear. Honey B is an all-around curious type. And I’ve noticed Mave is very keen on foot coverings, but she is more subtle about it.

Go ahead, give us your guesses as to why so many chimpanzees are fascinated by human shoes!

Snow cones, Squeegees, and Smarty pants, oh my!

January 13, 2024 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

It is another cold day here at the sanctuary! The chimps spent their day with extra projects provided by caregivers to keep them occupied since outdoor activities were off the table for the day given the very cold temperatures. For the most part, this included things like adding seeds to their daily forage for them to search for inside, and providing flavored snow made with fresh snow and sugar free juice. But, as you will see in the video for today, Honey B quickly created her own project, and showed off her tool use skills and determination in the process. Her group enjoyed watching her work, and reaped the rewards when trading parts of her contraband back to caregivers for extra snacks!

Jamie’s group had a more laid-back kind of snow day with lots of relaxing in fabulous blanket nests, eating their flavored snow, and playing together with both caregivers and each other. Enjoy some photos from the day below!

Traffic Report

January 12, 2024 by Amanda Hathaway

We’re experiencing extreme winter weather and temperatures (it’s 5 degrees F as I write) out here in Cle Elum, which makes for interesting challenges to our operations. For instance, our driveway is steep and the produce delivery truck can’t make it up when it’s snowy, so the produce order gets dropped off at the bottom instead of conveniently by the front door. The driveway proved to be a challenge for some staff vehicles this morning too, so a few of us had to park at the bottom and walk up. But that’s not where the challenges end, oh no! Some of the hydraulic doors that are exposed to the cold move at a snail’s pace and the chimps are more less inclined to use the cold greenhouse spaces and therefore more cooped up and restless and prone to conflict. So, we were running a bit behind today, but we adapt and sally forth! We do our best to make sure their spaces are toasty warm and cozy with blankets and that they’re occupied with engaging enrichment items and activities. And while there was some conflict in this group today, there was also quite a lot of play, going on!

Unbeknownst to the Department of Transportation, they provided some interesting enrichment to the chimps today when they closed off I-90, causing traffic to redirect onto 1-10, which Cy’s group can see from their playroom windows. When the chimps noticed the increased traffic on their highway, they all gathered at the windows making alarm calls. This must have been a matter of deep concern because they were even distracted from lunch service!!

Temperature update: it is now 4 degrees F.

Bubba’s Bouncy Ball!

January 10, 2024 by Kelsi

Enriching chimpanzees is hard work. We have particular guidelines to ensure that the chimps will not consume something unsafe and that the item of enrichment cannot harm them. Sometimes, we think an enrichment item will be so perfect, only for it to arrive and realize it was made of a material the chimps can’t have. Caregiver Chad did a lot of research on the Jolly Ball that we wanted to give to Burrito on his birthday, but when it arrived it was leaning towards a little to soft of plastic to give to the chimps. However, this morning we were discussing how we knew he would love it soooo much! We decided that we could keep a close eye on the Jolly ball and that if it was destroyed we could remove it. When we showed Burrito his belated birthday present his eyes lit up! Once their group was invited back into their freshly cleaned Playroom, Burrito immediately grabbed it. He was beaming with joy. I think you will all be pleased to know that the ball is still alive and well!

This is a screen grab from the video. I know the quality of the photo might not be great, but it might be the best part of the whole video!
