It is another cold day here at the sanctuary! The chimps spent their day with extra projects provided by caregivers to keep them occupied since outdoor activities were off the table for the day given the very cold temperatures. For the most part, this included things like adding seeds to their daily forage for them to search for inside, and providing flavored snow made with fresh snow and sugar free juice. But, as you will see in the video for today, Honey B quickly created her own project, and showed off her tool use skills and determination in the process. Her group enjoyed watching her work, and reaped the rewards when trading parts of her contraband back to caregivers for extra snacks!
Jamie’s group had a more laid-back kind of snow day with lots of relaxing in fabulous blanket nests, eating their flavored snow, and playing together with both caregivers and each other. Enjoy some photos from the day below!

Honey B is a force to be reconned with, Ellen! I’m sure after this caper, someone showed you the heist of the water hose…

Oh Honey B ….You little devil !
She is so fun to watch, I had the mission impossible theme going in my head the whole time.:revolving_hearts:

Oh boy. As soon as I saw the word caper I knew it didn’t mean a small pickled berry served with seafood dishes. No, added to the name Honey B it definitely meant “an activity or escapade, typically one that is illicit or ridiculous.” I swear she must have been a safe cracker or a master jewel thief in a previous life. If only she had waited until after dark.
Nancy Duryea says
I agree Gaynell. I adore Honey B and love nothing more than watching her being naughty! :joy:
Gaynell says
I knew you would love your girl’s shenanigans, Nancy. Hope you are staying wrm as you are slightly colder than we are in Portland. Just start alarm calling if you get stuck in traffic.

Well another day of creativity from flavoured snow, blanket nests and squeegees!.Honey B certainly demonstrated her tool using skills -with a little help from the gang. I t may be freezing outside but there’s not a dull moment indoors. I loved this and thankyou for sharing with us.

Loved hearing her little grunts of triumph!
I’ve often thought it was a shame the 3 couldn’t have been integrated with the 7, not only for Burrito’s sake, but also bc Honey B and Jamie together would have been something to see. but now that they’ve both managed to wreak havoc with a cardboard tube, I’m convinced these two are on some kind of psychic wavwlength! 🙂
Eli says
Oh Honey B! What a clever, determined lady. Her happy grunts during her caper are just the best. Just when you think something is out of reach, Honey B is there with her cardboard tube to prove you wrong!
Maureen says
I LOVE Honey B! I thought she had finessed that squeegee under the caging!

Funny B….. :grin::monkey_face:

The speed at which she spies an opportunity, plans how to get what she wants, and doesn’t give up after the first try is amazing. We all know how intelligent she is…..and she proves it over and over. She’s one very special chimpy lady.

Truly amazing. Loved the captions especially the “calculating” which truly described the act. Whoever coined the phrase “dumb animals” didn’t know what they were talking about…especially in the case of Chimps
Kathleen says
For everyone who believes chimps have the intelligence of a five year old, please watch this. Then show me a five year old who could even begin to pull off this swift, well calculated caper!
So many things made me laugh (and made me feel pretty proud of our clever girl!) in this video. First was Honey B’s quick-to-notice reaction to the cleaning buckets and second was how swiftly she moved to act because she knew one of you would be returning soon! Honey B was always thinking one step ahead. But the roll of paper falling from the sky (and your caption, Ellen) made me laugh out loud. So. Did that paper roll just happen to fall by accident at just the right time or, was it tossed down by Mave? Hysterical.
You couldn’t possibly be disturbed by Honey B’s caper, after all, she was trying to help with the cleaning! 😉
Cy is sooooo handsome. Wow.
