In memory of Doreen and Jody

April 3, 2024 by Katelyn

Donna Hughes has so graciously sponsored this day of sanctuary in memory of her sister, Doreen Hughes, and beloved Jody, and she shares this special message about today:

“In memory of those we have lost in April. Today marks the 5th anniversary of Doreen’s passing. I will be interring Doreen’s ashes today. I will also put some items with her that she loved, which include a lovely silver pin of a chimpanzee. I also want to remember Jody today, who also passed away in April. Those who left marks on our hearts will live forever. I hope to see some wonderful photos of Jody, who also will never be forgotten. Glad she had almost 15 years in sanctuary. RIP girls.”

We’ll be thinking of you and Doreen today, Donna. Certainly the pain of losing those we love so very much becomes part of us, but may moments that hold our hearts and ease them be part of us as well. We’re honored that you are sharing such a special day with all of us, and thank you so much for including beautiful Jody. Doreen and Jody, both so deeply missed.

Ain’t No Foolin’

April 2, 2024 by Chad de Bree

Happy Day After April Fools Day! Hopefully nobody pranked any of you too bad!

I apologize for this very brief blog! Caregivers had their biweekly staff meeting, and today’s went a wee bit longer than anticipated. So please forgive me.

I do have photos though! I hope they paint a better picture of today than any words I could conjure up!

Negra

Annie grooming Negra, who was the first one out onto Young’s Hill this morning.
Of course a morning snack of grass was to be had!
After breakfast, it was time for a nap.

Missy

Missy returning from a morning race around Young’s Hill. She was waiting for her competitor (who will appear shortly).

Chasing a trespasser as Foxie looks on.
Can you find the trespasser in this photo?

Crow

Here they are!

Jamie

Missy actually was just finishing what Jamie had started.

Mave

No. Your eyes aren’t fooling you. That is Mave on the Bray! Granted it was a skirmish that initially brought her out there. She chose to hang out a bit when things died down. When the skirmish picked back up about 5 minutes later, Mave casually walked out there to give Terry and Gordo some reassurance. I decided to include this photo since it is rare to come by one of Mave on the Bray.

Easter Video

April 1, 2024 by J.B.

Easter was a busy day here at the sanctuary. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to schedule Jake to do some repairs and improvements to the building on the same day as a chimp party. Thankfully, the staff and volunteers (and chimps!) were all good sports about it and we got it all done.

Over the winter, Facilities and Ground Technician Jake, who happens to be a skilled welder, fabricated some new food chutes for Jamie’s side of the building. Food chutes let us safely pass larger foods and enrichment items to the chimps and we have them in all areas of the building except Playroom 1 and Greenhouse 1. Now that the weather is warmer we were finally able to get these new ones installed, along with some new perches for Cy’s group.

Despite Diana’s pronouncement, it’s hard to say who the day’s real winner was: Cy, for discovering the jackpot atop the tower on the Bray, or Negra, for getting eggs, peanut butter, and a leisurely walk through the grass all in one sunny spring day? Let’s call it a tie.
