Bromance Isn’t Dead

November 27, 2022 by Jenna

As today’s video suggests, “bromance” is very much alive in this chimp house. I caught Terry and Willy B engaging in an exciting grooming session – with tons of breathy pants. It still amazes me to think that a year ago at this time, Willy B and Terry lived in two separate groups. Now, Terry and Willy B (plus their 7 friends!) have been living together for 7 months (as of tomorrow)! I’m so happy for each of them as friendships help enrich their lives.

Speaking of the group of 9, I had a photoshoot today with Cy. He took me both indoors and outdoors in attempt to get the perfect shot. I tried, Cy!

Terry’s Bronx Cheers

November 20, 2022 by Jenna

Terry is one of our most vocal chimps! Daily, he spends a large amount of time Bronx cheering, also known as blowing raspberries. I saw a few comments about Terry’s Bronx cheers on our recent videos, so I thought it’d be a great topic to dive into today.

Terry doing what he does best, Bronx cheering:

For those unfamiliar with Terry’s Bronx cheers, you can hear him do so here (1:31), here (0:43), and here (1:38). I have also included a link to a video that J.B. created a few years ago that covers Bronx cheers (located at the top of this page), however Terry had not arrived at CSNW then so he wasn’t featured in that specific video.

Let’s dive into how humans created the term Bronx cheer as well as blowing raspberries.

“Bronx Cheer”:

Definition

  • a sound people make by vibrating their lips in order to express disapproval or contempt
  • a sound created when ridiculing somebody

“Raspberry”:

Definition

  • a sound of contempt made by protruding the tongue between the lips and expelling air forcibly to produce a vibration

As you can see, Bronx Cheer and Raspberry are basically synonymous.

Origin of “Bronx Cheer”:

  • Originated from The Bronx, a borough in New York City
  • The phrase is believed to have originated after or during the 1920s when it first appeared in the Bridgeport Telegram, a Connecticut newspaper. The term was used in reference to a soccer match.
    • Written as “…if Chicago lose the east will grin and give western football the jolly old Bronx cheer.”
  • Originated as a slang term in the USA in the early 20th century and began appearing in newspapers around 1920 on topics such as sports.
  • ‘Bronx cheer’ was included in an English-American Dictionary column that was printed in the English newspaper The Daily Mail in 1924, which was part of the Mail’s regular attempts to keep their readers up to date with Americanisms.

Origin of “blowing a raspberry”:

  • Essentially the same action as making a Bronx cheer
  • Some believe the expression is a shortened version of the Cockney rhyming slang ‘raspberry tart’ and the sound is an imitation of flatulence
  • Other explanations are that a raspberry comes from the shape of the lips when making the sound

Now you must be wondering, how did this end up relating to chimpanzees?

As J.B. wrote on his Bronx cheer blog in 2020, captive chimpanzees have discovered that the Bronx cheer, or blowing raspberries, is a great attention-getting sound to capture the attention of humans, especially when used repetitively and loudly. It can mean “hurry up”, “gimme that”, “look at me”, etc.

While I did not cross-check across multiple sources, I did find an article that said Bronx cheering or blowing raspberries has not been reported in any wild chimpanzee group. However, it has been reported in some (not all) groups of wild orangutans. I will link this article here to read more.

Some non-vocal common ways that captive chimpanzees use as a means to capture the attention of caregivers include cage banging and hand clapping.

Back to Terry:

While many of the chimps at CSNW use a Bronx cheer sometimes, especially when food is being served, Terry takes it to a whole different level. It’s almost part of who he is, which may be weird to say. Terry will Bronx cheer during meals while waiting for his turn, he will Bronx cheer to greet a human and interact with them throughout his day, and also will often Bronx cheer while grooming (although he lip-smacks while grooming too).

The VIP Lounge

November 7, 2022 by Anthony

The chimpanzees spend more time resting and socializing in the heated indoor areas as the weather gets wetter and colder.

We’ve recently been focusing much of our content on the chimps’ outdoor enclosures, especially Young’s Hill and The Bray. Large outdoor habitats are irreplaceable because they provide chimpanzees with unique opportunities to engage in “natural” behaviors such as climbing, foraging, and patrolling as a group. The greenhouse-type enclosures, including the new Riverview and Oakwood Greenhouses, also have certain characteristics that the chimps can take full advantage of at their leisure.

Even so, chimpanzees living in sanctuary also need clean, climate-controlled, enriched indoor spaces. These are locations where they can be cozy, entertained and secure, regardless of the conditions outside. It would be easy to look at the artificial interiors and think that these enclosures are inferior to the outdoor ones, but the chimpanzees don’t seem to think so. Instead, the residents seem to utilize the various spaces differently so that together they provide one expansive, complex, multi-functional home.

Sofia highlighted the indoor front rooms in her September post “Back to Front Room 7” and Anna wrote about them again in last week’s post “Small space, big fun“. I thought it might be fun to share some additional video clips of the chimpanzees enjoying that same space today!

Predictions

October 26, 2022 by Kelsi

During introductions it was hard tell who Honey B would become friends with. We knew Honey B enjoyed her alone time, but still appreciated the company of her chimp and human friends on her terms. When Honey B first re-met Dora they were both so excited to see each other! However, Terry and Honey B had to put the work into rebuilding a friendship. Recently, Honey B has been hot commodity with her new group. It seems like everyone wants to “mall walk,” groom, play, or just be around her. If we had to predict which chimps would bond with Honey B, Dora and Rayne would really be my only guesses. Lately, we find Honey B and Terry hanging out a lot. We have been seeing some play with her and Cy and even Gordo gets a little quick play session in from time to time.

Words can’t express the feelings I have when watching Honey B build connections with her group. It’s everything they worked so hard for and why a bigger social group is so important for chimps, especially one like Honey B.

Did you miss me?

October 6, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Last September 14th, Willy B sustained an injury to his face that required medical intervention. During all this time he has been in isolation to allow the site to heal properly but also to prevent over grooming on behalf of his friends. Due to the fact that this group is still considered to be newly integrated, putting him back with the group required planning. We had to make sure he would be accepted in the group after spending time away from them. A week and half or so our reintroduction efforts commenced. We started by arranging one on one play dates with Willy B in his isolation rooms, the front rooms. He had play dates with multiple individuals, and even if they were very eager to groom his face wound, Willy B was very good about setting boundaries to protect it. We were ready to move to the next stage.

With help from Jen Feuerstein, staff decided that the course of action was going to be reuniting Cy, Mave, Honey B, Rayne, and Terry with Willy B and see how that went. We did that yesterday and everyone was very happy to be back together. With no negative moments, we decided to move forward with having all nine individuals together today. That meant adding Gordo, Dora, and Lucky to the mix. The nine are back together and to our delight, it has been an overall mellow day and they have spent most of the day grooming in the sun filled green houses. We really love days like today.

Did you know that Giving Day for Apes is only a few days away? Early giving is open now, but on Tuesday, October 11th we will be competing with other accredited sanctuaries in North America for a variety of prizes. So much has happened at the sanctuary over the last few years and it’s all due to our generous supporters- keep helping us make our residents dreams come true by donating to CSNW! All donations will go directly to the care of our residents.

Hot Commodity

September 28, 2022 by Kelsi

For once there wasn’t a lot going on today for the chimps or the humans. That happens very rarely in this chimp house now a days! The chimps spent most of their day napping, grooming, lazily playing, or working on some enrichment.

Jody grooming a pile of blankets… oops I mean Negra!

Jamie and Missy spent most of the day coaxing their caregivers over to the small garden where the tomatoes and grape vines were ready to be picked! Of course, we had to oblige!

Terry was a hot commodity today! As I walked by with the camera, Lucky and Terry began grooming.

I took a series of photos of Terry Bronx Cheering (or blowing raspberries) when he and Lucky were grooming. Terry is always Bronx Cheering- whether he is grooming, trying to get our attention, and he even does it when he is working up into a display.

A few minutes later Rayne passed by to join the party. Terry began grooming her and then Rayne reciprocated the grooming.

I found Honey B relaxing on one of the tree leaves. She looked content, but also up to no good all at the same time.

Jamie also found sometime in the day to kick back and relax too.

Sweet sweet Lucky lounging in Oakwood.
