The Progression of Sleep

March 9, 2022 by Kelsi

The Riverview and Oakwood greenhouses provide an incredible amount of warmth, even on snowy days. The chimps also seem to really love the vertical space! We often find them up high in the greenhouses grooming or taking a nap in the cozy snug greenhouse.

The progression of Dora falling asleep:

Terry and Cy having their heads together before grooming.

Terry with his dream-eyes.

Rayne holding her feet and laying in a nest.

Bonus photo! A silhouette of Annie laying next to Foxie.

Double Date With a Side of Bubbly

March 5, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Introductions with the hope of merging the two California groups continued today. Starring a double date scenario involving Willy B and Mave, and Cy and Dora. It went overall very well. What goes best with a Saturday night double date? Some bubbly. The chimpanzees got soapy buckets as day time enrichment and it was a HIT. Jody and Annie were the first ones to dig in into the soapy pool that caregivers prepared for them and their friends in the play room. Missy took her time coming down to join in the pool party but did not miss out either. In the green house, Burrito made sure to hog the water bucket and then grabbed a cup to facilitate the drinking.

Sunday Energy

January 23, 2022 by Sam Jones

Today felt colder than it was last week, but that didn’t stop Burrito from running out onto Young’s Hill as soon as they had access! During the warmer weather Burrito is usually ready to start running around the hill when his group gets access in the mornings. Today he had that same energy and sprinted out and stuck to the snow path that leads to one of the structures. I didn’t have the camera with me at the time to take any photos, but later in the day Chad was playing chase with Burrito so I followed them. Burrito kept making his way out onto the hill after running around the Greenhouse. Right now the human paths around the Greenhouse are icy in some spots so we are slower (at least I am) on our end of the chase. That doesn’t stop Burrito though! It just means he has to wait a little longer for me to catch up.

Burrito wasn’t the only one in a playful mood today. Mave was all for some playful stomps and mini games of chase. I wasn’t able to get a photo of her from today, but this one is from a couple weeks ago.

It can sometimes be hard to get a photo of Burrito in this spot because he usually wants to play chase. This morning I was able to get a couple quick photos before he was running through the front rooms!

Burrito on Young’s Hill.

Photos from what some others were up to today.

Negra took some of her lunch back up to her nest to enjoy it. I need to start taking notes because this is an excellent idea.

Dora in the Greenhouse once the sun came out this afternoon.

Photos of Rayne in the Greenhouse from this morning until afternoon nap time.

Cy was resting next to Rayne.

Willy B after breakfast.

Photo Salad

January 16, 2022 by Sam Jones

This blog is filled with some random photos from the chimp house today!

Do you ever feel like someone is watching you? I definitely had the feeling this afternoon and saw Honey B keeping her eye on me from behind the bamboo.

She’s always watching.

Willy B taking an after lunch rest.

Dora hanging out in the Greenhouse.

Gordo finishing the rest of his lunch.

Cy took his reading material out to the Greenhouse.

I tried all day to get a photo of one of the chimpanzees in Negra’s group. I finally got one of Missy all bundled up in her nest.

‘Twas the day after Christmas

December 26, 2021 by Sam Jones

‘Twas the day after Christmas when all through the chimp house, not a chimp was stirring, not even a Lucky.

The stockings were picked through and dismantled from the trees without care. In hopes that the party cleanup crew would soon be there.

The chimpanzees were nestled all snug in their nests, while visions of more presents danced in their heads. Cy with his magazines and blankets had just settled down to watch the movie Shrek.

Out in the yard there was such a loud clatter. Jamie sprang from her nest to see what was the matter. It was just me, making too much chatter.

The chimpanzees all had such a great Christmas! So many new presents! Today was very laid back and a lot of resting after the huge celebration yesterday.

Dora, Rayne, and Terry having a little grooming party this morning. Lucky joined too after I took this photo.

Grooming with friends

December 12, 2021 by Sam Jones

The chimps were all warm and cozy inside this morning and most were taking some after breakfast naps. Not Rayne and Terry though! They were having quite the grooming session. Terry was very gently grooming Rayne’s face with his lips. Anthony happened to spot this and I rushed to get the camera. This went on for a long time and they groomed on and off. What a perfect way to groom when your stomach is full from breakfast!

Cy waiting for us to put out some new magazines for him to read.

Dora resting on one of the wooden toys.

On the other side of the building Katelyn was on snow treat duty! The chimpanzees in Negra’s group were lined up in the front rooms waiting for Katelyn to bring them lots of snow! Foxie’s snow had a special treat waiting in it.

Negra enjoying snow.

Jody patiently waiting for some snow.

Foxie with her shovel coming inside to join the snow party!

Portrait of a Pant Hoot

December 11, 2021 by Diana

The day started out on the warm side, considering that we are well into the month of December. The chimps’ greenhouse spaces were cozy all morning.

A storm came through in the afternoon, making the most delightful sound as the droplets hit the greenhouse roof panels.

Just as the rain began, Dora went into her greenhouse, looking up towards the sound:

glancing at me:

and then beginning a glorious chimpanzee response to the rain – a classic pant-hoot (for a classic video of pant-hoots, go here):

Her display was short-lived. She calmly retreated to a windowsill:
