Grooming with friends

December 12, 2021 by Sam Jones

The chimps were all warm and cozy inside this morning and most were taking some after breakfast naps. Not Rayne and Terry though! They were having quite the grooming session. Terry was very gently grooming Rayne’s face with his lips. Anthony happened to spot this and I rushed to get the camera. This went on for a long time and they groomed on and off. What a perfect way to groom when your stomach is full from breakfast!

Cy waiting for us to put out some new magazines for him to read.

Dora resting on one of the wooden toys.

On the other side of the building Katelyn was on snow treat duty! The chimpanzees in Negra’s group were lined up in the front rooms waiting for Katelyn to bring them lots of snow! Foxie’s snow had a special treat waiting in it.

Negra enjoying snow.

Jody patiently waiting for some snow.

Foxie with her shovel coming inside to join the snow party!

Oh! The smiles on Rayne and Terry’s faces in the bottom photograph in the sequence speak volumes! Love abides…

Terry almost seems offended at the interruption, Sam!
Thanks for the pics from both groups!

How fortunate you caught that grooming session between Rayne and Terry. Thanks! Cy’s expression could make one weak in the knees. If I were to see that look on Cy’s face, I’d drop everything and get him a stack of magazines — Pronto!

I saw you had snow in your forecast. So, did everyone choose to stay inside and have Katelyn deliver the snow as opposed to venturing outside to gather it themselves? (….clearly, this question does not apply to Negra). I’m guessing Foxie was “coming inside” from the greenhouse and not Young’s Hill becuase her shovel looks as dry a bone. I’m guessing her intentions with said shovel were not to assist J.B. in clearing a pathway but instead, to use as a massive scoop to get as much snow as possible for snacking! 🙂

They ventured out some, but mostly wanted Katelyn to hand deliver the snow. I don’t blame them! I would want the same haha.

Wow Sam, I am loving the moments you are capturing in your lense! Allows those of us who are far away to momentarily be right there and enjoy what you get to see and do every day. As for the snow treat, this may be a naive question, but do you ever put flavoring in the shaved ice, ie… make snow cones, as a special treat for them?

I think they do in the summer, diluted fruit juice. Or, once in a blue moon, a special treat

During the summer we do make shaved ice with different food items in. Around the 4th of July we made shaved ice with watermelon. They love it!

What a lovely blog Sam, but to be honest: I would call this snuggling in stead of grooming……
You have to look at the pictures upside down to really appreciate the smile of contentment on Rayne’s face.
And the last photo of Terry’s big smile as if to say: “yes, I am a great lover”. Adorable!

What a way to start my Monday! The photos of Terry and Rayne’s grooming session are absolutely priceless and stunning! Turning the photos upside-down and seeing the smiles on their faces made my heart flip-flop for them! Sam, all of your photos are truly beautiful and so endearing, thank you for running to grab your camera for us!
