Pinterest Craft Challenge

July 6, 2012 by Diana

I would call myself a Pinterest dabbler at this point. Aside from the endless recipes, I’m amazed by the craftiness of the pins that I’ve seen.

So, I had a thought today…

We have a BUNCH of misprinted t-shirts. We’ve had them since October 2009 and just haven’t come up with a way to use all of them.

Seems like a challenge perfect for crafters, whether they’re on Pinterest or not. It’ll be simple – I’ll mail you a shirt or shirts, you create something (bonus points for creating something the chimps will love), you send us back your creation, we’ll share it with others on Pinterest and vote on the best. We’ll come up with some prizes too. If appropriate, we’ll give your creation to the chimps to see what they make of it.

Go to the link of the pin on Pinterest that explains the challenge and share widely with your crafty friends. The more creations we get, the more fun it will be. I’ll set the deadline based on the interest we get in the project.

Here’s a photo of the shirts:

The printer reversed the image on the shirts, which resulted in a demon-like image of Jody (too scary to show in full view). We don’t want people walking around wearing the shirts and we don’t want to do anything with them that preserves that image, though cutting the image out and using the web address would be okay.

Ready to craft? Just email me ([email protected]) and tell me how many shirts you need. I’ll answer any questions you have and give you some more guidelines if you want to make something for the chimps.

Let it snow!

April 29, 2012 by Jackie

Just kidding!

We’re still getting to enjoy beautiful spring-like days here in Cle Elum, but to mix things up a bit, volunteers Stephanie and Katelyn (who drive over from Seattle) stopped at Snoqualmie Pass this morning to pick up some snow for the chimps. Mixed with strawberries and juice, it was a delicious treat! The Cle Elum Seven are certainly not native to the Pacific Northwest, but they certainly know how to make the most of it!

But mixing things up for the chimps didn’t stop there. Stephanie brought tons of super soft new blankets for them. Jody was extremely happy. She immediately collected as many as possible and built a giant nest by the barn doors, constantly rubbing them on her face and making an “ahhhh” sound. After a cold snack, new soft blankets were probably right on time. Thanks Stephanie and Katelyn!

Pure Joy

February 25, 2012 by Diana

I’ve been referring to the weather we’re having in Cle Elum as bi-polar. One minute it’s sunny and the next minute there’s a blizzard. Yesterday we caught an unexpected break – the forecast called for snow flurries, but it was a pretty mild day. As you saw from the video yesterday, Missy took full advantage of the spring-like weather and was, well… spring-like.

In addition to all of that video, J.B. also managed to get some photos of Missy and Annie playing on the hill. I probably don’t need to say this, but it is still such an amazing thrill for us at the sanctuary to watch the chimps on the hill. Each time they go out, they seem even more relaxed. Playing is now a regular occurrence, but it’s still all so new and exciting. Watching Missy with a play face wrestle with Annie makes me indescribably happy.

Missy looks like she’s going to do a pro-wrestling move on Annie:

Annie returns with a play bite to Missy’s brow ridge:

Annie tries to give Missy the slip:

Missy grabs Annie’s fingertips:

Later, Missy was sitting by herself behind a post on the hill:

Here’s a close-up of the photo above. That’s a happy chimp face:

The Photogenic Cle Elum Seven

July 23, 2011 by Diana

I was looking through some photos from June. As you can imagine, all of the caregivers take a lot of photos. Most of the best ones make it to the blog, but once in a while I find some that haven’t been posted. It only took me a few minutes to find these never-before-seen gems:

Burrito:

How to initiate play

March 12, 2011 by Jackie

Given the fact that Foxie is probably the most playful chimp I’ve ever known, normally one would not need the following instructions. But I suppose they could be good to keep around, just in case. 🙂
