Burrito Chimpanzee

March 6, 2016 by Keri

Age: 33. His actual birthday is January 6, 1983. Click on the link to find out more about Burrito’s history prior to arriving at CSNW.

Nicknames: B, Mr. B, Bub, Bubs, Bubba

Best friend: Foxie

Favorite food: FOOD!!!!!

Best known for: His love of food, playing chase with caregivers, getting massaged while playing tug-of-war, playing with Foxie, his impressive displays, banging on the doors and spitting water (especially geared toward the lead caregiver while he/she is operating doors)

Distinguishing physical characteristics: Well, he’s a boy, so that part is pretty obvious. He has a lot of white freckles on his face and is missing the top part of his right ear. He’s pretty excited a lot of the time, so his hair stands on end (pilo erect) making him appear “fluffy”.

Personality: Fun, sweet, playful, cute, goofy, silly, charming, handsome and energetic. He can also be a very boisterous troublemaker!!

Other: Sometimes while walking around Young’s Hill, he does a little “goat-like kick” and although he is the only male of the group, he is not the most dominant.

Jody Chimpanzee

February 28, 2016 by Keri

Age: 40ish. Her records indicate she was born in 1975, possibly in the wild. We celebrate her birthday on Mother’s Day each year to honor the nine children she brought into this world, all of whom were taken from her in the labs.

Nicknames: Jo, Jo-jo, Farmer Jo, Jody the Harvester

Favorite things to do: Foraging for wild plants and bamboo on Young’s Hill, making elaborate nests with blankets, sheets, clothes, straw, bamboo and other plants she’s harvested from Young’s Hill. She’s also an expert lounger!

What she is known for: Caregivers know her for her bouncy greeting mostly in the morning. Her foraging strategy includes gathering food in her hands, arms and mouth and bipedal walking with all of it. She also likes to lie on her belly while eating and is known for rounding everyone up for meal times. She’s also known for spitting out tomato seeds.

Distinguishing physical characteristics: Droopy bottom lip, knobby swelling, missing parts of some of her toes from old injuries, endearing face with expressive eyes, which are a little closer together than those of the other chimps.

Personality: serious, independent, kind, confident, earnest, self assured

Other: She makes what we refer to as “dinosaur sounds” (after she completes her nest, she often dives face first into it and lets out a loud “ahhhh” sound). Also, we’ve noticed that she seems to be quite fascinated with bearded men!

Jody was one of the first chimps to go out onto Young’s Hill this morning.

Here’s a good example of her droopy bottom lip.

Foxie chimpanzee

February 21, 2016 by Keri

Age: 39. She was born on August 8th, 1976 at Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in Texas.

Nicknames: Fox, Fox-fox, Tiny (she’s the smallest of the chimps here at CSNW)
Best friend: Burrito
Favorite food: Fruit and fruit smoothies!!

Best known for: Her love of troll and Dora dolls. She also loves to play “Toss the Troll” with caregivers. She’s known for her pirouettes, flips and somersaults as well.

Distinguishing physical characteristics: Very petite chimp with no belly, dark face
Personality: Fun, playful, goofy, silly, child-like, sweet, kind, and the peacemaker of the group.

Other: She rubs her toes together when she is content.

These photos of Foxie were taken this afternoon, before she spotted one of her Dora dolls in the raceway.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day Chimp Style

February 14, 2016 by Keri

How did the chimpanzees celebrate Valentine’s Day? Well, with a party of course!

Volunteer caregivers Patti and Debbie prepared today’s breakfast smoothie and enrichment along with the help of staff member Elizabeth.

web_Valentines_Day_enrichment_party_preparation_IMG_9048

web_Valentines_Day_enrichment_preparations_troll_doll_IMG_9047

After we finished cleaning the Playroom (one of the chimps’ indoor enclosures), we laid out blankets in the shape of hearts on the floor and placed pomegranate seeds and organic red roses inside. We also hung three pink, heart-shaped pinatas with nuts inside and scattered the Valentine-themed cups and treat boxes (with nuts hidden inside) throughout the enclosure. Unfortunately, I accidentally erased all of the photos of the setup, so you’ll have to use your imagination for that or see if you can spot some of it in the following video taken today.

And here are a few photo highlights from today as well. Unfortunately, the setup photos weren’t the only ones I erased by accident; I also erased photos of Negra, Jody and Missy enjoying the party.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! And if you haven’t already, it’s not too late to Share the Love for the Cle Elum Seven! This Share the Chimp Love fundraiser will provide funds for the direct care of the chimpanzees now and will help with our plans for the future.

Missy Chimpanzee

February 7, 2016 by Keri

Age: 41ish. Her birthday is unknown, but it’s estimated she was born in 1975. We celebrate her birthday on September 23 each year.

Nicknames: Miss, Miss-Miss, Little Bigfoot (we often joke that she resembles Bigfoot when she stands bipedally on Young’s Hill)

Best friend: Annie
Favorite foods: Tomatoes!

Distinguishing physical characteristics: distinctive white patch above her upper lip on the left side of her face, somewhat square body with no neck (she does have a neck, it’s just short).

Favorite things to do: Running, jumping, sprinting, climbing and other various acrobatic feats (including, but not limited to, firehose walking, leaping and balancing), building big nests and playing with Annie. She is also pretty serious about grooming sessions, including grooming herself with a tool.

Personality: active, energetic, graceful, adventurous, good sense of humor

Other: First to offer support/back up to the other chimps and she almost didn’t make it to sanctuary.

Negra Chimpanzee

February 1, 2016 by Keri

Age: 42ish…Her exact birthday is unknown since she was captured in the wild, presumably in 1973, although she could be older than that. We celebrate her birthday on June 13 each year, which is the anniversary of her and the other chimpanzees’ arrival to the sanctuary.

Nicknames: Neggie, Queen Negra

Favorite foods: Peanuts, lettuce, fresh spring grass
What she is known for: elaborate blanket nests (usually with one pulled over her) and clapping during meals.

Distinguishing physical characteristics: Her round “Buddha” belly, dark freckles on her face and she is missing half of her left ear (we do not know how this happened; she arrived to the sanctuary this way).

Favorite things to do: napping, resting, sleeping
Personality: wise, dignified, cranky
Other: she likes her caregivers to dance for her!
