Forage Friday

August 29, 2025 by Jenna

Today was a beautiful day in the PNW! George started out getting access to the Bray. He wandered outside for a few hours and even took a nap on one of the structures. J.B. snapped a bunch of photos of him! Here’s one down below as a sneak peek.

Around lunch, all the groups had a forage. Check out some forage photos below!

Missy’s 50th Birthday!

August 23, 2025 by Jenna

A 50th birthday is a huge milestone! Today is Missy’s 50th birthday. Can you believe it?!

Thank you to Paulette for sponsoring Missy’s birthday party today! She was the first of many Missy birthday sponsors- thank you all so much!

As you probably know, Missy is a tomato enthusiast. It doesn’t matter what kind, the size, or the color – Missy loves them all the same. On brand, today, we had a tomato themed birthday celebration with every tomato you can think of, a tomato “cupcake” I attempted yesterday, watermelon bowls (tomatoes, cabbage, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, snap peas), and drinks (sparking cider and mix of guava, pineapple, and watermelon).

The chimps absolutely loved it! Especially Missy. Check out the party video above!

Asking Caregivers Their Reason Why

August 12, 2025 by Jenna

Today, I asked some of the caregivers “Why chimps?. Out of all the jobs in the world and all the species of animals, how did you end up working with chimps?

Here are some of their answers (some of it is paraphrased):

Why chimps?

Krissy: It is something that is hard to put into words. It was a childhood desire that I had forgotten about,  and didn’t remember until I heard about CSNW in my fifties.  I started volunteering and soon realized I needed to make a career shift into chimpanzee care.  It was the right decision!

J.B.: At the beginning, it was because of how similar they were to us. Now, it’s because of how challenging chimps are and how every day is something new. Also, a short commute.

Amanda: Their intelligence and their emotional capacity. It’s also what I feel we owe them based off of everything humans have done to them. It’s a debt we can never repay.

Kelsi: Their brilliant minds, how resilient they are, how mischievous they can be, and how they always keep you on your toes.

Intern Sarah: Why not?

Ellen: I got the opportunity to intern with chimpanzees at another sanctuary (Chimp Haven) during college and loved getting to know them and their personalities, and seeing the love and relationships they built with their caregivers. I knew I wanted to continue to make a difference in the lives of sanctuary chimps, and have worked with them every since graduating!

Sabrina: I saw a chimp at the Oregon Zoo in the 1980’s and she threw poop. I found it quite funny.

Anna: I always wanted to work with animals and was hooked after meeting the sign language chimps at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute.

Jenna: I have always been drawn to great apes since I was a child, but specifically loved orangutans. It wasn’t chimps until I completed an internship at Fauna Foundation in 2019 that I had an “AHA!” moment. I was hooked.

Enjoli (a new caregiver we haven’t introduced yet! Coming soon!): I’ve always loved primates. They’re incredibly smart and are charismatic. They deserve to be in a sanctuary with caregivers who care, have a variety of enrichment, ability to make their own decisions, and do what they want with their day.

Foxie’s Birthday Bash Continued!

August 9, 2025 by Jenna

Yesterday was Foxie’s 49th Birthday! If you haven’t checked out yesterday’s blog, feel free to check it out here. We had a surplus of party footage so please enjoy today’s video featuring that content!

Thank you to Paulette for sponsoring Foxie’s birthday!

Growing Older Together

August 2, 2025 by Jenna

Burrito and Foxie’s friendship goes way back, long before they arrived at CSNW in 2008. However, since at sanctuary, they have played large roles in each other’s lives. If I had to guess, I would imagine playing is their favorite thing to do together. Burrito is always playing and he helps bring out Foxie’s silly side as well, although she is generally pretty silly.

Today, I found them grooming together in the Greenhouse and recorded it for today’s video. I love that they get to grow old together!

Check out photos of this duo from over the years:

Warmin’ Up

July 29, 2025 by Jenna

It’s currently hot in central Washington! We’ve been mostly enjoying cooler weather this summer, with occasional bouts of hot hot heat. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be nearing 100 degrees F, but then it’s supposed to drop in temperatures again. Phew! Stay hydrated out there!

Please enjoy photos of some of the boys!

Who’s That Boy? …It’s George!

July 17, 2025 by Jenna

Today, George got to explore The Bray again! For those unfamiliar, The Bray is one of our two 2-acre outdoor habitats, which is open-top and surrounded by electric fencing.

Fortunately, both times so far, George has explored The Bray with no issues! He acts like he’s been doing it for months now, with little arousal. As you can see in some pictures, George has a droopy lip, which tells us he is relaxed and content out there.

I can’t believe George has been at CSNW for two months already! Having George meet other chimps is the next thing on our to-do list. Chimp introductions are a slow, intricate process that requires lots of planning and care.
