Happy Birthday, Willy B!

November 30, 2024 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Today is Willy B’s 34th birthday! We are so fortunate to be able to know, love, and care for this special chimpanzee. He certainly always keeps us on our toes, whether it be trying to understand the motivation behind some of his actions, or quite literally when he suddenly decides its time to play chase (never miss out on a game of chase with Willy B!)! There’s so much to love about Willy B from the silly faces he makes when he sees himself in a camera, the way he eats many crunchy foods (like fennel, with the side of his mouth munching on them like a rabbit), watching him crack open a coconut (see today’s video to enjoy this for yourself), his satisfied food grunts, his ever-growing bravery in conquering The Bray, witnessing all the small moments of friendship between him and the other chimps in his group, and so much more.

We celebrated Willy’s birthday with coconuts, pineapple juice cups, and banana chow cookies with a peanut butter frosting on top. In addition to the food festivities, we made sure Willy got to enjoy one of his favorite pastimes of watching videos of chimps. I think it is safe to say he had a great birthday! Happy birthday, Willy B!

A Boy and His Ball (and Hammer)

November 29, 2024 by Krissy Brasfield

After a raucous Thanksgiving celebration yesterday, which included lots of fun and lots of food, most of the chimpanzees are laying low (I think many of our followers in the U.S. can relate, am I right?).

Burrito isn’t generally one to “lay low”, but today he did most of his playing on his back!  It’s always a pleasure to watch Burrito entertain himself 🙂

Thanksgiving 2024

November 28, 2024 by Kelsi

We have so much to be grateful for here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. We are beyond grateful for the residents that we are so lucky to care for, but we are also incredibly thankful for our community at CSNW as well. We would not be able to give such quality care without the unwavering support of our avid followers, donors, and volunteers. Your generosity ensures that the chimps and cows have the resources they need to live their best lives. Your belief in our mission helps us to continue providing lifelong care, compassion, and sanctuary for these extraordinary beings. We are so thankful for each of you who plays a role in making this sanctuary a place of healing, peace, and love.

Off With Your Head

November 27, 2024 by Kelsi

Today, we put out two new stuffed animals that I thought Burrito would really like. However, Burrito never got the chance to play with them… Interestingly enough, Foxie who never really has cared about stuffed animals gravitated to them. She played/inspected them for a short time and then moved on. Later, Sabrina and I went to clean the front rooms, when we happened upon a crime scene, a rather graphic one at that. Both victims, stuffed animals, had the same fate- both had been decapitated, that is a pattern! But who would do that?

Foxie is known to be:

Sweet:

Silly:

Kind:

Loving:

You’d never know the more sinister side:

Again, we apologize for such disturbing photos. We suspect the stuff animals only made it 30 minutes after Foxie received access to the Playroom. The evidence does show that Foxie was last seen with the victims and was heard beating her babies, which is a common game she plays, in the front rooms where our first victim was found. This game is reported to get a little loud and often involves a hammer, spatula, or object to “hit” the babies. Foxie was also seen fleeing the crime scene. So we are pretty sure it was Foxie, the one you’d never suspect…

Willy B and Lucky Quality Time

November 26, 2024 by Grace

It’s not everyday that we see Lucky engaging in a long play session with one of her group mates, but yesterday was one of those days! We were wrapping up the first round of cleaning on that side and stumbled onto a very sweet play session between Lucky and Willy B, with Cy and Rayne close by.

Distractions

November 25, 2024 by J.B.

Sometimes, while cleaning, I can hear George Costanza saying, “We’re making incredible time!” Patting myself on the back, I begin to think about all of the things we can get done with a few extra minutes before lunch all the snacks I could eat from the snack cupboard while taking a leisurely break. But then I hear the faint sound of breathy laughter. I leave my bucket and scrub brush to investigate…

Chimps playing! I’ll just film a minute or two for the blog.

Forty minutes later, I return to my half-cleaned enclosure, snackless, and running behind on lunch prep once again.

Burrito’s Personal Trainer for Winter

November 24, 2024 by Diana

First things first, BIG thanks to everyone who participated in the Comfort & Joy online auction!! Your support brought me joy for sure, and I look forward to sending out your winnings over the next two weeks!

I really am so incredibly grateful for the kind people that the chimpanzees have attracted to support the sanctuary.

I know Burrito and Foxie, the subjects of today’s video, are two who have caused a good number of people to follow the blog.

I hope you enjoy the video and give thanks to them!
