The Matchmaker

November 4, 2024 by J.B.

We often describe Rayne as being socially savvy. She seems to have a special ability to understand the needs of her group mates—in particular, to recognize their limitations and vulnerabilities and adjust to them. This is especially evident in her interactions with Willy B but it’s true of all of her relationships to varying degrees. Rayne was the first to be added to the reintroduction group after Cy and Willy B’s week together in part because of this skill.

I share the video below to give you a sense of what this kind of social intelligence looks like in practice. I want to make it clear that interpreting chimp behavior is always a fraught exercise. We simply can’t get in their heads and thus I really don’t know what Rayne intended, if she intended anything at all. Perhaps I’m just telling myself, and now you, a story.

But it’s notable that since Rayne was added to the group, Cy and Willy B have been spending a lot more time grooming one another. Mr. Aloof and Mr. Awkward, brought together by a common interest in dominance, a shared fondness for female swellings, and a good friend that, subtle though she may be, seems to know what she’s doing.

Don’t forget about our Comfort & Joy Online Auction, going on now! You can bid on dozens of items to bring comfort and joy to the chimps and to yourself. Do you know what would bring me comfort? And maybe even a little joy? Replacing the components to our driveway entrance gate that were recently stolen and installing additional security measures to prevent future thefts. We’re about a third of the way there as I write this—thank you!

Rayne Joins the Men

November 3, 2024 by Diana

J.B. explained our reintroduction experiment last week, and I thought I would do a follow up today since we moved on to the next step.

As a duo over the last week, Cy and Willy B did not interact a whole lot, which is not shocking since they are both somewhat aloof. What we were waiting for was a day when they did three things: played, groomed for at least ten minutes, and used a new social enrichment puzzle.

Throughout the week, we were monitoring pretty closely, often using the security cameras, for signs of who took the lead. It was clearly Cy, with Willy B deferring to him throughout the week. It has been a lot quieter this past week without Willy B getting everyone going in the afternoons. It’s possible he will still be inclined to do this as the group gets bigger. He did make some attempts throughout the week, but because he was separated from the larger group, they did not have the same level of anxiety or feel the need to respond in the same way that intensified the situation and ended up in conflict.

This morning, I watched on the cameras as Willy B displayed toward the other group, and then I watched as Cy took over the display, with Willy B retreating. This seemed to serve to remind everyone that he outranks Willy B. It’s nice to see Cy express confidence in this way, and we hope he keeps it up as we add more chimps.

Rayne is the second chimpanzee to add because she is the highest ranking female in the group and therefore supports Cy in his leadership role. She also has been able to develop a positive relationship with Willy B and generally isn’t as intimidated by him as some of the lower ranking females in the group. So, the idea is that Willy B will continue to develop his relationships with Cy and Rayne and understand, without having the back-up of Mave and Honey B, that he is definitely subordinate to Cy, and, in fact, that’s really the best place for him and for the group.

Speaking of… we have created some fun groups for the friendship bracelets that we have in the Comfort and Joy online auction! These bracelets were made by two young ladies – Holly and Juliet – who came along with their parents on a vacation to Cle Elum while their veterinarian mom, Dr. Kathleen Olson, filled in for Dr. Erin while Erin was away a few weeks ago. They (the bracelets and the whole Olson family) are so sweet! Check them out, and be sure to check the auction every day, as we’ll be adding more items!

When I was closing up, I spied Honey B who had tucked herself into her nest, the epitome of comfort:

6 Years with the Cattle!

November 2, 2024 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

As Katelyn mentioned in yesterday’s blog, today is the 6th anniversary of the arrival of our lovely cattle! We celebrated our bovine friends with fresh cuttings of willow, a favorite browse item of the herd. We are also always trying to find new foods they may enjoy but these ladies are surprisingly picky! Today’s willow came with a side of pumpkin, to which Meredith, Honey, and Betsy said a polite, but firm, “no thank you.” Enjoy some photos of our favorite cows, and join us in celebrating 6 years with these silly, sweet, and sometimes spicy ladies. We are so lucky to know and love them!

A close up moment with Honey! She clearly enjoyed her hay pellets!

Honey eating willow branches.

Honey and her daughter, Meredith, enjoying willow branches together.

Meredith looking for the next willow branch to snack on. Look at those pretty curls that are coming in as she grows out her coat for winter!

We also celebrate and remember Nutmeg today, who sadly passed away this past spring after a sudden health crisis. He was a beloved member of the herd and Betsy’s son, and his gentle giant presence is missed daily.

Novemberween!?

November 1, 2024 by Katelyn

By now many of you probably know that I’m hard pressed to ever let go of the magic of October. Every moment of every season holds beauty, but as far as autumns go, most any of our neighbors would probably agree this has been one of the most dazzling we’ve seen. As if on cue yesterday, Jamieween dawned cloaked in a deep, spooky fog, the golds of October suddenly tinged with the darker golds of November and snowflakes made an appearance in the forecasts. It’s one of the things I appreciate most about nature, something is always letting go, something is always becoming. There’s a comforting steadiness in that knowing.

After one day of rest post-Jamieween, our November celebrations begin tomorrow, November 2nd, with the 6th arrival anniversary of our tiny bovine family, Betsy and her son, Nutmeg, and Honey and her daughter, Meredith.

As many of you know, much to our broken hearts, Nutmeg passed away last spring after a sudden health crisis. He is sorely missed, most especially by his family, and we’re so grateful the Jersey ladies have enjoyed a peaceful, hopefully healing, summer together in their lush summer meadow above the sanctuary.

They recently returned to their winter pasture and I was just remarking to them the other day how floofy and beautiful the beginnings of their winter coats are.

On November 6th beautiful Lucky Lou is turning 33! And you have a special chance to attend her birthday bash virtually if you register for our Comfort & Joy online auction straight away (more details below)!

Another year of adventure and courage as Lucky braved her outdoor habitat, the Bray, for the first time.

On November 10th, gorgeous and sassy Honey Cow turns 17!

Honey and her daughter, Meredith, adventuring to the stream in their summer pasture.

And on November 30th, Willy B turns 34! Endearing, heavy-sigh inducing, Agent of Chaos, we love him so. In all honesty, given all he’s endured and had taken from him in life, it couldn’t be more amazing to see his courage and resilience shine through, as it consistently does.

How far this guy’s come…

November 23rd, Jody’s son, Levi, is turning 41! Levi was one of the last of our chimpanzee mama’s children to reach sanctuary and it took a long while for him to get there. Ellen (and us, by extension) has the great fortune of knowing Levi from her time working with him at Chimp Haven and shared this fantastic photo with us.

Sweet Jody:

Additional November happenings will be the chimpanzees’ Thanksgiving Day celebration falling on the 28th this year and the menu planning is already underway. Included will be the rare treats of Field Roast celebration roast (a super delicious vegan meat substitute) and Hawaiian rolls, which are some of the chimpanzees’ favorites, if food squeaks are any indication (and they are 🙂 ).

Terry enjoying a “roast” from a Thanksgiving past:

And as noted above, our Comfort & Joy 2024 online auction is LIVE, having kicked off on Jamieween and running through November 20th! Be sure to register before Lucky’s 33rd birthday bash and you will receive an invitation to attend a virtual visit to her party! And of course, be sure to check out the expanding list of auctions items for you or the chimpanzees (or for you both)!

We have so many special occasions to celebrate each month, but really, it’s the countless seemingly small, unexpected moments with these extraordinary individuals that are the even bigger celebrations. A nervous and tentative step onto the earth for the first time, the willingness, trust, and shared moments of friendship with the humans who they didn’t ask to have hovering over or dictating their lives, the courage to play, hug, fight, repeat, again and again and again, with the chimpanzee people you find yourself living with, the bravely and generously showing up every day for the letting go and the becoming.

We appreciate you all more than we could say. Happy November and rest of autumn (or spring!) ahead! May they be filled with tiny, glimmering, extraordinary celebrations.
