To Shift or Not To Shift

September 24, 2024 by Jenna

Shifting occurs when caregivers are moving the chimps out of one space and into another, in order to clean the enclosures. We shift the chimps every morning, two to three different times so that we can clean every space. Our cleaning routines typically stay the same so that the chimps know what to expect. However, one of the many beauties of sanctuary is the fact that we don’t have a true schedule of where the chimps have to be at certain times (such as a zoo, where they may need to be on exhibit by a certain hour). While we have an ideal daily cleaning schedule in mind (typically from 9:30am-1pm), the chimps can say yes/no to our plans at any time.

After our first round of cleaning, we always put out a forage with greens (cabbage, lettuce, sometimes radicchio). While the chimps love greens, sometimes the forage alone isn’t motivation enough to shift. As we have discussed in many blogs before, Honey B is probably our #1 hold out (meaning she is less likely to shift with her group than anyone else), Negra is probably in the number 2 position, with the occasional Foxie, Dora, and Mave as runners up. While the cleaning day certainly goes by faster if all the chimps shift on-time, we don’t force anything. If Honey B doesn’t want to shift with her group, for example, she isn’t required to, and we will work around her while she hangs out alone or with team Mora when they occasionally don’t shift. Negra, on the other side of the chimp house, also has days where she prefers to stay in her warm, cozy Greenhouse nest and won’t shift back into the Playroom so we can clean the Greenhouse. Again, that’s okay and we will try at another time or the following day. Surprisingly, despite all of these ladies who always seem to question, “To Shift or Not To Shift?”, we manage to clean every space the majority of days!

The only times that we would absolutely need them to shift is in emergency situations, such as a rattlesnake or unusual bad weather. In emergency situations, caregivers would bring out high value foods (e.g. grapes or berries) to get the chimps attention and ask them to move to x enclosure or to vacate x enclosure (depending on the situation). We practice recalls regularly, so the chimps are familiar with the recall process and it should run fairly smoothly.

Today was a rough day for myself + the camera. I present to you the one photo that turned out…

Happy Birthday, Meredith!

September 23, 2024 by J.B.

Today we are celebrating Meredith’s 9th birthday! Our girl Meredith went through a lot last year, having undergone several procedures over the winter to treat her arthritis and then enduring several months stuck in and around the barn during her recovery, but it was all worth it because she has spent a glorious summer roaming the upper pond pasture with her Mom, Honey, and second mom, Betsy.

We’re grateful to Tobin for sponsoring this day in the birthday girl’s honor. As Tobin says, “I’m glad that she’s part of the group of people that live at the sanctuary and I wish her a happy birthday and a good new year of life.”

Thanks, Tobin, and thanks to all of Meredith’s Bovine Buddies for caring for one of the sweetest cows we’ve ever known!

Photo Roundup!

September 22, 2024 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Today has been a busy day. As I was starting to put together my blog, Jamie started alarm-calling, which most often means a snake has found its way through our snake fencing and is in the chimpanzees’ space. We quickly jumped into action to recall her group, asking them to come off of Young’s Hill and into the Greenhouse and their indoor spaces, and thankfully everyone except for Annie and Jamie was already inside. Annie made her way in quickly, and everyone was rewarded with strawberries while we waited for Jamie to be convinced that the humans could handle the snake problem and come back inside. Everyone is back inside now and enjoying their strawberries as a reward for participating in recall. Dessert before dinner, what a day!

Here are some photos from the day:

Morning Play!

September 21, 2024 by Krissy Brasfield

This morning, Jenna and I were cleaning the playroom when we were greeted with delightful chimpanzee laughter coming from the front rooms.  Can you guess who?  Of course, it was Burrito and his good friend Foxie!  Wrestling, poking, tickling, biting, pushing, pulling…all the things required for a raucous play session.  We really wanted to capture this fun time without catching the ire of the fun police.  How do you think we did?

A Jolly Good Time

September 20, 2024 by Sabrina

As we all know, Burrito has a serious obsession with his beloved Jolly ball. We have to take it away from him periodically to give everything a good scrub and disinfect, but that just builds up the anticipation for when they’re reunited again. Well, today was the day Bubba got his prized possession back. We couldn’t resist grabbing the cameras to capture the fun and excitment for you all to see in today’s video!

A day of celebration from Terry for Mike, Annie and Mave!

September 20, 2024 by Katelyn

We’re sending our gratitude to Terry Stockdale for sponsoring today in celebration of her husband, Mike Stockdale, and birthday ladies, Annie and Mave!:

“I would like to sponsor a day of “outside adventure” for Annie and Mave the September birthday girls and my husband, Mike!! Please sponsor September 20 to celebrate his birthday and the freedom the chimps enjoy outside. Mike loves to be outside too, taking nature photographs.”

Happy Birthday, Mike! We hope your day is a fantastic one! Thank you both, for sharing the special days of your lives with the chimpanzees!

Five Facts about Negra

September 19, 2024 by Anna

1) Negra is the oldest chimpanzee living at the sanctuary. She was born in 1973 but we aren’t sure of her actual birthday because she was captured in the wild as an infant.

2) Negra’s favorite activities include sleeping in a massive pile of blankets  and watching her caregivers dance for her. Today I practiced some pirouettes in front of her and she encouraged me to keep going by nodding and gesturing from her nest.

3) Despite her curvy figure, she actually can be quite picky with what she likes to eat.  She loves lettuce, peanut butter and primate chow above most everything else.

4. Negra is a chimpanzee that sticks to her routine but can still surprise us from time to time. There’s nothing quite like watching Negra decide to head up to the top of  Young’s Hill in search of edible plants.

5. Negra is an independent and highly respected member of her group. She has rightfully earned her title of “Queen” at CSNW.
