Five Years

June 3, 2013 by Jennifer

Just the other day, I watched Jamie, Foxie, Burrito, Missy, Annie, Negra and Jody excitedly forage for corn and sweet potatoes on Young’s Hill. Their enthusiasm was contagious and I couldn’t help but reflect on how far they’ve come over the past five years.

Time has flown by and it is hard to believe that Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest will be celebrating its five-year anniversary on June 13. I am truly humbled to see how Keith LaChapelle, Sarah Baeckler, J.B. Mulcahy, Diana Goodrich and countless others have put their hearts and souls into creating Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest for the Cle Elum Seven.

In celebration of our five-year anniversary, we are going to launch a special campaign called, Give Five Day. On June 13, we are going to ask everyone to donate $5 (or more if you wish) for Jamie, Foxie, Burrito, Missy, Annie, Negra and Jody.  The numbers are symbolic as $5 pays for one meal for one chimp, we are caring for seven well-deserving chimpanzees, and the Cle Elum Seven are now free from their 5 x 7 cells. In total, we hope to raise $35,000 as part of our summer fundraising goal.

Happy Birthday, Eric!

June 3, 2013 by Katelyn

Today was sponsored in honor of Eric Jensen whose family shared the following message:  “Happy Birthday to an impy chimpy kind of son who we are so proud of.  Love, your parents.”  What a wonderful way to honor your son on his birthday! Thank you so much for thinking of the chimps.  Have a great day, Eric, and lots of pant hoots to you!

Sunny sanctuary days

June 2, 2013 by Lisa

Last week Katelyn posted about Jamie’s reaction to a relief from the rainy days of May. I have to admit, I’m right there with her! I, too, have anxiously been awaiting the warmth of the central Washington summer. Working here brings an added satisfaction to each sunny day as I have the pleasure of anticipating and watching the joy of the chimpanzees as they forage and spend time on Young’s Hill. Never having been deprived of the sky, the wind, the grass, and the sun I simply can not imagine what an amazing contrast this is to the chimpanzees today but I appreciate every opportunity, every day that gives them one more gift of freedom. Here is Missy, enjoying Young’s Hill in the sun.

Veterinary Clinic Update

June 1, 2013 by J.B.

We’re getting closer to completing one of our most important projects to date: the creation of an onsite veterinary clinic. This project was made possible by generous contributions from Karen and Don Young, the National Anti-Vivisection Society, Project V.E.T.S., and the many Fund-a-Need donors at our 2011 and 2013 auctions. And now I’m happy to say that we have a few more people to add to this list.

Kathy Cochran, one of the best friends a chimp could have, connected us with Bud McIrvin and Dan Price of Providence Hospital in Everett, WA, and as a result we now have an incredible anesthesia machine to add to our clinic. Dan was even kind enough to drive out to Cle Elum this morning with his wife, Janet, to give me and Dr. Mensching a tutorial.
