Water and Ice Enrichment on a Hot Day

May 7, 2016 by Diana

There’s a whole crew of people here building a new structure on Young’s Hill today! We will do a big reveal on Monday, so start making your predictions as to what the structure will look like.

Because there are humans on the hill, the chimpanzees don’t have access. And today is HOT! It feels like summer. With these two circumstances combined, we needed to come up with something cooling and time-occupying for the chimpanzees. We decided on water and ice enrichment.

I’d say it was a hit.

Face Washing, Pt. 2

September 6, 2013 by J.B.

A while back, we told you about Annie’s habit of washing her face.

I finally managed to catch it on video. Whether she’s actually cleaning herself or she just finds it refreshing, we can’t really say. But it is fairly unique.

Bubbles

December 28, 2012 by J.B.

Once and a while we put out buckets of soapy water, using plant-based soap, for the chimps’ enrichment. Jamie likes to use the soapy water to clean. Jody shoves handfuls of soapy foam into her mouth as she makes her “dinosaur noise” (actually a combination food grunt and low moan).

I don’t know if she did it intentionally, but the other day, Foxie was actually blowing bubbles.

Another Quiet Day

August 24, 2012 by J.B.

Today, Burrito was checking out his reflection in a plastic mirror.

Foxie enjoyed some bottled water (we’re still waiting on tests of our well water since it was contaminated during the fire).

Missy and Annie spent some time grooming. Missy likes to groom herself with a tool – in this case she ripped a splinter from a log. If you look closely you can even see some dandruff falling.

Annie likes to pick Missy’s nose. Missy tolerates it but doesn’t seem to enjoy it. I don’t blame her – Annie doesn’t bite her nails down like the other chimps do.
