Water and Ice Enrichment on a Hot Day

May 7, 2016 by Diana

There’s a whole crew of people here building a new structure on Young’s Hill today! We will do a big reveal on Monday, so start making your predictions as to what the structure will look like.

Because there are humans on the hill, the chimpanzees don’t have access. And today is HOT! It feels like summer. With these two circumstances combined, we needed to come up with something cooling and time-occupying for the chimpanzees. We decided on water and ice enrichment.

I’d say it was a hit.

Hi Diana. The new acerage looks beautiful. I know the chimps will love the new land, and also welcome their new friends. I saw a building on the property. Will it stay or be torn down?

Also looking thru the videos I saw one on the fire at Youngs Hill. I don’t know when that happened. While the chimps were safe inside their fire proof housing did they realise something was happening? I would think they might smell the smoke. I’m sure the personal kept them occupied.

    Thanks, Kathy ????????

Hi Kathy! There are no buildings on the new property. We have some older buildings on our current property – many that’s what you saw?

The fire was in 2012. They definitely knew something was happening – there was a lot of smoke and there were a lot of firefighters and fire trucks all around. The chimps were very quiet through the whole experience.

      Thanks for your questions!

I love the images of Annie and Burrito drinking. Great shots. Looks like a fun afternoon and great way to spend a hot day. I am still chuckling over Jamie and her dental hygiene habits. Brushing her teeth with her margarita glass, way to go! I also love her ‘tool caddy dopp kit’, clever indeed. Looks like she has a little troll friend with her in there.

Can’t wait to see the surprise structure!!
