20 snapshots of the day

January 20, 2016 by Katelyn

I probably could never quite explain how ecstatic we all were to wake up to sunshine and beautiful clear blue skies this morning. We couldn’t wait to start shoveling the chimps’ walkway on Young’s Hill and fluff it up with fresh, dry straw so that they could enjoy their morning outside.

As we prepped the walkway the chimpanzees were so excited, intermittently watching us and playing and laughing with one another inside.

web_sunrise_yh_snow_sparkle_kd_IMG_5982

Once I opened the door to the hill I couldn’t believe my eyes when who but Negra was leading the group outside! You can just see her head peeking out from in front of Missy at the head of the line. Then we have Annie, Foxie and Jamie bringing up the rear with one of her new snow shovels (Burrito was the one person who opted to stay inside and eat snow from the raceway door, but he’s been enjoying a day of Burrito-style antics with his caregivers):

web_jamie_bipedal_shovel_snow_yh_kd_IMG_7386

I put a straw path up to one of the swinging tires, always a favorite spot to check for ice treats. Jody headed straight for it and quickly made her way back to the greenhouse with her prize. The trick was getting around boss lady, Jamie, with her treat undetected.

But the boss had work to do so Jody was able to sneak by.

Missy:

Annie enjoying her solitude:

But she was so happy when her best friend, Missy, arrived and greeted her with a kiss and a hug:

web_annie_kiss_greet_missy_platform_yh_kd_IMG_7398

web_annie_greet_hug_missy_platform_yh_kd_IMG_7401

Foxie rubs her toes together when she’s happy and content and if you look close you can see she seemed to be pretty pleased to be enjoying the morning outside with her troll:

web_foxie_troll_sit_platform_snowy_yh_kd_IMG_7402

Jamie was in her element this morning as she proudly surveyed her snow covered kingdom:

Foxie and troll headed back inside after stopping to collect snow on the way:

web_foxie_troll_head_down_path_with_snow_y_kd_IMG_7417

web_foxie_close_up_bring_snow_inside_kd_IMG_7419

Annie was the last to head inside, but had to stop briefly to readjust her huge mouthful of snow:

web_annie_down_path_with_snow_kd_IMG_7421

web_annie_push_snow_in_mouth_kd_IMG_7422

Jamie still had a little work to do:

web_jamie_closeup_shovel_snow_kd_IMG_7414

Negra didn’t stay out long, but she made it quite away out to collect snow and then returned to her favorite sunny spot inside the greenhouse to enjoy it, along with Jody.

web_negra_jody_snow_snack_gh_kd_IMG_5992

It’s been a good day at the sanctuary! The chimpanzees have spent a lot of time outside enjoying some warmer temperatures and even more time at the top of the toasty greenhouse grooming and napping. Blue skies and sunshine have worked wonders and been a welcome respite from our crazy winter for all the primates here today.

PILO!

January 19, 2016 by Anna

Have you ever noticed a photo of the chimpanzees looking larger and “fluffier” than normal? Having hair that is pilo erect means that it involuntarily stands on end due to excitement, fear, or cold. Humans become pilo when we get goosebumps, and since we have less hair, it’s less obvious. Another example of piloerection is when a dog’s hackles go up. Looking to see if a chimpanzee is pilo or not helps caregivers gauge their arousal level. I perused through some of our old photos and videos to find some good examples of each chimpanzee demonstrating piloerection.

Foxie:
web_foxie_pilo_mouthful_water_kd_IMG_6022

Burrito spends a great deal of his time in a “fluffy” state, so it was very easy to find a pilo picture:

Jody:
web_Jody_pilo_sit_on_ground_watch_volunteers_arrive_YH_ek_IMG_2349

Annie (possibly pilo because she is running through the cold):
web Annie pilo erect run in snow towards raceway yh IMG_2754

Jamie (about to display):
web_Jamie_pilo_erct_hoot_face_green_toy_display_PR_kh_IMG_1132

Missy:
web_Missy_pilo_YH_IMG_6782

I had a tough time finding a photo of Negra with pilo erect hair, but that’s because she’s usually in action during a fight. In the following video from a couple years ago, you can see Negra and others during a conflict. Watch for some good examples of piloerection:

Sunny Spirits

January 14, 2016 by Anna

This morning as we shoveled a pathway to one of the platforms on Young’s Hill, I could tell it was going to be well worth the effort. The sun was so warm and comforting that I knew there would be chimpanzees out on the hill the moment I gave them access to it. There is a certain infectious energy that spreads around the building when the weather is nice. The humans and chimpanzees alike thrive with this kind of atmosphere.

This morning a line quickly formed and everyone but Burrito (who later followed) and Negra (who basked in the greenhouse sun instead) were out on the hill at once.

They all headed for the closest platform.

Jody spent a lot of her time on the ground eating snow. Here she sports a relaxed facial expression with a very drooped lip (classic Jody face).

Missy and Annie were last to come in for lunch because they were too busy spending time together on Young’s Hill. Here’s to great moods and more sunshine in 2016!

What happened today?

January 4, 2016 by Keri

This morning while we were cleaning the Playroom I noticed that the chimps were pretty quiet in the Front Rooms so I went to check on what they were up to. Annie and Missy were on the ledge in room 2 grooming one another, while Burrito sat quietly nearby. Unfortunately, none of the photos I took of Annie and Missy turned out, but the one of Burrito I think is pretty cute.

Burrito
web_Burrito_close_up_look_at_camera_FR_ledge_kh_IMG_7842

Negra was on the ledge in room 3 in one of her blanket nests.
web_Negra_lie_ledge_blanket_over_body_hand_near_face_FR3_kh_IMG_7838

Foxie and Jody were on the ledge in room 4. Jody was just out of camera view, so I couldn’t get any clear photos, but Foxie wasn’t camera shy as she showed me her dora doll.
web_Foxie_hold_dora_look_camera_bottom_lip_out_FR_kh_IMG_7850

I kept walking back and forth looking for Jamie, figuring she must have been in the Greenhouse or on Young’s Hill gathering snow. I kept looking, but couldn’t find her until Katelyn said she was in room 2. I looked again and realized why I missed her. I initially thought it was a pile of blankets, but upon closer inspection, I could see her eyes and top of her head peaking out from her nest.

This photo was actually taken from the Playroom looking back into room 2.
web_Jamie_hiding_covered_with_blanket_in_nest_boot_enrichment_FR2_kh_IMG_7859

After we finished cleaning the Playroom, we set out blankets, various sized boxes filled with enrichment items (boots, dolls, paper, brushes, socks, wooden blocks and tools) and filled their new blue bucket with snow. We also put out lettuce as a forage food.

Missy trying to open one of the boxes.

Sometimes you just have to put your whole body into it when two hands just doesn’t cut it.
web_Missy_stand_open_box_enrichment_PR_kd_IMG_7874

Foxie took some time to inspect (and lick) the box that one of our new office computers came in (thanks again to Diana Petri for purchasing the computers from our Amazon Wishlist).
web_Foxie_inspect_computer_box_hold_dora_enrichment_PR_kd_IMG_7864

Jamie’s first mission was to gather lettuce before checking out any of the boxes or eating any snow.
web_Jamie_forage_lettuce_snow_bucket_enrichment_PR_kd_IMG_7867

web_Jamie_open_inspect_computer_box_enrichment_PR_kd_IMG_7875

Annie sat and ate snow that she took out of the blue bucket.
web_Annie_eat_snowball_PR_kd_IMG_7885

And Jody did her best at staying out of camera view by gathering the lettuce we had put out as a forage and heading up to the loft to make a blanket nest in front of one of the windows that overlooks the neighbors farm.

A look of contentment in their eyes

January 3, 2016 by Keri

Often times I catch myself gazing at these chimpanzees, wondering what they are thinking. It’s easy for me (and maybe for most people) to attribute my own human feelings of awe and wonder as I watch them explore Young’s Hill (their 2 acre outdoor enclosure) or sit quietly looking out the windows from the catwalk in the Playroom. It seems that there is a sense of excitement and enjoyment when they are playing with one another and a curiosity as they inspect new enrichment items.

Looking at the pictures below, I can’t help but think that there is a sense of contentment in their eyes.

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2016 by Anna

The chimpanzees have spent the last two meals welcoming 2016 in the only way we know how, with back to back forage parties! Last night they had a black and white themed forage complete with a sparkling pear cider “champagne” toast and today we broke out another bottle of cider and the chimpanzees had a New Year’s Day brunch forage.

The party meal..

Happy Birthday, Tracy!

December 29, 2015 by Katelyn

Today, incredibly, we have three supporters sponsoring this day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees! We begin the day with a sponsorship by Tracy Headley, a dear friend (to chimps and humans alike) and member of our sanctuary family. Tracy probably wouldn’t tell you this, but she lives her life every day bringing light, support, comfort and love to so many beings – both human and non. She is celebrating her birthday today and shared this touching message:

“Again this year I celebrate my friends at CSNW on my birthday. Every day of the year they are a gift in my life.”

Happy Birthday, Tracy! Thank you so much for all that you do for the chimpanzees. You hold them in your heart and make a difference in their lives at every opportunity. We are thrilled to celebrate your special day with you and can’t say how happy we are that you are part of our chimpanzee family. You are a special soul and you make the world a better place by being here. We hope you have a fabulous day full of all good things! With lots of hooting!

Here are your pals to help start your celebration off right:
