Jody

Happy Birthday, Ardy!

November 4, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by the chimpanzees’ wonderful friends, Tracy Headley and Bruce Clifton, in honor of Tracy’s aunt, Ardith Porter, on her birthday. Tracy and Bruce do so much to help ensure that the chimpanzees live the best lives possible here in their sanctuary home and are a very special part of our family. Tracy shared this sweet message about today:

“Bruce and I are sponsoring today in honor of my aunt Ardy. She said the only present she wanted from us was a donation to the chimps.”

Tracy and Bruce, thank you so much for always holding the chimps in your minds and hearts and for including them in your family celebration. We are so grateful to have you in the world!

And Ardy, thank you so much for sharing your special day with the chimpanzees! We wish you the happiest of days full of love and joy. Happy Birthday pant-hoots from all of us here at CSNW!

Jody is the best at knowing how to enjoy every moment:

A Chilly Fall Morning

October 25, 2015 by Whitney

It is a beautiful, chilly fall day here at the sanctuary, and the chimpanzees spent some time on Young’s Hill enjoying the crisp air. We have a lot of help with cleaning this morning, which means Jamie has many walking companions to choose from!

Here is Jamie on her second walk of the morning:

Jody also ventured out:

Missy and Annie spent a lot of time climbing on the hill, and then settled in the greenhouse to groom. Missy:

Annie (with Missy behind her):

I wonder if this view may be part of the reason why Jamie goes on so many walks:

The People of the Sanctuary

October 19, 2015 by Elizabeth

It’s been over seven years since the chimpanzees’ previous lives as research subjects came to an end, and they moved into their new home at the sanctuary. We’ve seen so many changes in them in that time; not only physically, but in their personalities, their interests, their likes and dislikes. I’m going to do my best to describe each of the chimpanzees as we know them today.

Annie:

web_Annie_look_at_camera_GH_ek_IMG_1784

Annie is sweet and shy, but is less and less afraid to stick up for herself. She adores her best friend Missy, but has also learned to appreciate alone time. When she’s feeling relaxed, she lies on her back and makes “bird noises” by holding her hand to her mouth and blowing air through. She loves to look at caregivers’ bare feet.

Burrito:

web_Burrito_hold_bite_red_toy_enrichmentmorning_look_at_camera_GH_ek_IMG_3544

Burrito is boyish, excitable, and always hungry. He loves his caregivers, and turns to them when he’s feeling playful, which is always. He is learning to navigate the social waters of a chimpanzee group, but he still steps out of line from time to time and gets in trouble with the ladies. He has been joining boss Jamie on many of her perimeter walks around Young’s Hill, despite the fact that he’s a little afraid of her.

Foxie:

web_Foxie_look_at_camera_GH_ek_IMG_1787

Foxie is silly and childlike. She is the peacekeeper of the group, and works hard to make sure everyone is getting along. When she’s overjoyed, she does backflips, pirouettes, and a variety of breakdancing moves. She is rarely seen without her beloved troll and Dora the Explorer dolls. She loves fruit smoothie, and likes to tickle her caregivers with her toes.

Jamie:

web_Jamie_portrait_studio_chin_up_look_at_camera_FR4_ek_IMG_9580

Jamie is strong, focused, and very, very smart. She is an insecure leader, but what she lacks in confidence she makes up for in determination. She is obsessed with humans, and wants very much to be included in our activities. She enjoys projects and challenges – the trickier, the better. Nothing makes her happier than spending time with a caregiver and a good pair of cowboy boots.

Jody:

web_Jody_lie_down_blankets_GH_ek_IMG_8693

Jody is confident, independent, and serious. She is the self-appointed group manager, and often hangs back at the doorway when the chimps are shifting into a new area and ushers the other chimps through with an extended arm. She loves to make giant nests with mountains of blankets, and dives into them head-first with a low moan of contentment that we call her “dinosaur noise.”

Missy:

web_missy_rest_chin_arms_gh_kd_IMG_0879

Missy is an adventurous, athletic thrill seeker. If she were a human, she’d be the type to enjoy activities like sky diving and bungee jumping. She’s extremely loyal to her chimpanzee group, and will stick up for any of them at anytime, no questions asked. Her propensity for tending to the other chimps’ wounds has earned her the nickname “Dr. Missy.” She would do anything for tomatoes.

Negra:

web_Negra_closeup_look_camera_GH_kh_IMG_2770

Negra is regal, impatient, and wise. She stays out of most group conflicts, and lets the other chimps know when to cut it out with a decisive pant hoot. She is the cranky grandma who everyone’s a little afraid of, but respects nonetheless. Her ideal day is made up of blankets, naps, peanuts, and quiet.

A very classy party

October 17, 2015 by Anna

Yesterday we received a huge donation from a generous supporter. Produce and enrichment, oh my! One of the boxes contained decorations for Halloween/Jamie’s birthday set for a couple of weeks from now, while one of the other boxes was a massive collection of black and white themed decor. Of course it seemed right to throw an impromptu classy black and white party today!

Volunteers Lynn, Patti, and Alex (not pictured) helped prepare the party in the kitchen. They made a plum and banana smoothie to go in black plastic champagne flutes and zebra striped paper cups. Also included in the party forage: clementines, pomegranate, coconut, peanuts, and chow.
web_Lynn_Patti_party_setup_kitchen_aw_IMG_9515
The elaborate party setup included streamers, paper chains, piñatas, and personalized gift bags. There was even a black and white haired troll for Foxie!
web_black_white_party_setup_aw_phone_

In honor of the black and white theme I edited a few of the photos to fit the mood. Others I left in the original color format.

Burrito had multiple cups of smoothie:

Missy got in on the smoothie action as well.
web_missy_black_white_cup_aw_IMG_9554
She also managed to claim the black cat piñata.web_Missy_cat_pinata_gh_aw_IMG_5290

Jamie enjoyed most of her party from the comfort of the fire hose hammock.
web_Jamie_black_white_cup_gh_aw_IMG_5258

Foxie grabbed her new troll doll right away.
web_Foxie_black_white_troll_gh_aw_IMG_5271

Annie found several cardboard rolls stuffed with paper and chow.

Jody was victorious with her coconut haul.
web_Jody_black_white_party_gh_ek_IMG_9532

And this is a photo of Negra. I promise she got plenty of party treats. It just seemed like the best photo to finish off this very classy blog post.

Snoozin’

October 14, 2015 by Katelyn

On this quintessential autumn afternoon most of the chimpanzees are baking in sunny spots while Jamie is walking her caregivers ragged. It’s the most gorgeous day. As I walked up the stairs to the greenhouse it was so quiet and appeared empty so I didn’t expect to find anyone. But just as I rounded the corner I spotted someone on the top platform, where it’s warmest. It’s rare to come upon the chimps when they are sound asleep as they always seem to hear us coming so I was pleasantly surprised to find sweet Annie, fast asleep and hopefully dreaming of all good things. It didn’t take long for her chimp senses to kick in and wake up, but she took her time, enjoying the warm sun and afternoon breeze.

In other news, we are nearing the end of Great Apes Giving Day with a little less than 3 hours and 15 minutes to go!! As of this posting, thanks to our amazing supporters we have nearly reached our goal of $15,000 with an amazing $13,830!! For all of you who have contributed, thank you SO much!! As one of the smaller sanctuaries participating in this event, this will mean so much for our chimpanzee family. And if you’d still like to participate in support of Annie, Missy, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody and Negra, we’d so appreciate it. Every donation really does make a difference in their lives.

The neighborhood hot spot

October 10, 2015 by Katelyn

Most neighborhoods have that spot where all the locals like to gather, right? Well, our current neighborhood hot spot is the small orchard on the property, specifically the pear trees. The leaves are glowing orange and yellow with branches hanging heavy with fruit and a carpet of pears below.

web_dark_branches_autumn_gold_

web_pears_blur_background_IMG_8432

From top to bottom, all of our wild neighbors are stopping by to try and get them while they can, like these robins.

web_robins_orchard_treetop_autumn_IMG_8437

A quail pair:

web_quail_pair_kd_IMG_8425

Mr. Coyote diligently stood guard while the Mrs. did her best to retrieve some from under the fence:

One of our doe neighbors with her growing fawn are frequent visitors:

web_doe_leg_up_fawn_kd_IMG_9192

And with most neighborhood hot spots, you might know there is going to be some drama at some point. While Jamie might be boss of the chimp house, it seems Ellie fancies herself the boss of the orchard:

web_ellie_chase_deer_1_kd_IMG_9194

web_ellie_chase_deer_IV_IMG_9198

Chimpanzees living in the wild remember the location of favored food as well, particularly fruit trees. With food sources often being unpredictable and dispersed throughout a large area finding the most productive food resources with the most efficient use of energy and time is essential for any species so there is often a lot of competition for high value food. Thankfully, the chimpanzees here have us humans to deliver the goods so they get to avoid the drama at the local hot spot. Or at least keep it between the family.

The Forgotten Photos

October 8, 2015 by Elizabeth

We take so many photos of the chimpanzees that some inevitably slip through the cracks and never get shared on the blog. Here are some recent portraits I found on the hard drive; let us know which is your favorite!
