Two is Better than One!

March 22, 2023 by Kelsi

Today was absolutely beautiful! The sun was out, the chimps were enjoying their warm greenhouses, and the seven had another lunch Hill forage! I know I always talk about little moments in the chimp house: the moments that just kind of make your heart melt and remind you how grateful you are that these chimps are in sanctuary. Today was full of those little moments.

1. Negra was the first chimp out of the raceway for the lunch forage! She was going everywhere trying to find the potatoes and chow. It was very nice to watch.

2. Annie, as you may know, has already been spotted with her sweatbands! Today, she was either wearing them or carrying them in her pelvic pocket (a hot pink and green one).

3. Lucky was also spotted wearing a green sweatband (not pictured).

4. Foxie gave me her doll through the raceway so that we could go take a quiet walk around a little bit of Young’s Hill.

5. One of our interns gave us a pair of her Doc Martins that Jamie had been eyeing for awhile. We gave Jamie those boots today and she seemed elated to have them <3!

6. Cy’s group were out in the greenhouses for most of the day, all grooming each other.

Bonus photos!

Mave on the Mend

March 9, 2023 by Anna

Earlier this week there was a fight in Cy’s group and Mave sustained an injury to her sexual swelling. It was a deep enough wound that Dr. Zamzow made the decision to organize a medical procedure in the clinic yesterday so she could thoroughly clean out the wound and help it heal. This was also a bonus opportunity to give Mave a thorough physical and dental cleaning, including an abdominal ultrasound, since Mave had previously had a large ovarian cyst removed before moving to the sanctuary.

Sofia doing the dental cleaning, Mekenzie, CRNA monitoring the anesthesia machine, and sonographer Mariah and Dr. Zamzow performing Mave’s abdominal ultrasound for her physical:

This morning nurse Honey B gave Mave’s toes a thorough inspection.

Man! I Feel like a Woman!

March 8, 2023 by Kelsi

Today is International Women’s Day! I feel so blessed to work in such a female dominated field, it is truly empowering. Not only is our field dominated by women, but so is our chimp house, sorry Chad and JB :).

In the wild, males are usually the most dominate, however in captivity you can find females leading a group or allowing a male to think he the one in control, when really the female(s) are really calling the shots ;).  Let’s meet the real individuals that run the show in this chimp house!

Obviously, Jamie rules this Sanctuary:

Negra, our true queen:

Jody, our forager:

The adventurer Missy:

Foxie, the prankster:

The ever so kind Annie:

Mora, besties for life:

Miss popular Mave:

The friend to everyone, Dora (but mostly Mave):

Rayne, the calming presence:

Lucky, the sweetest of sweet:

Honey B, the master of mischief:

The care staff ladies aren’t so bad either!

Sounds of Sanctuary 2023

February 21, 2023 by Chad de Bree

Last year, I posted a video with sounds from around the sanctuary. As I have previously stated, these are the sounds you can hear on any given day and the sounds I miss on the days I am not in the Chimp House.

So please enjoy the Sounds of Sanctuary 2023!

A Plum Day

January 31, 2023 by Chad de Bree

Today started off as any other. Caregivers arrived, served breakfast, and began their tasks of cleaning of the day prior. When the door leading to Young’s Hill opened, the members of Jody’s group were eager to set off on their morning adventures.

Burrito, of course, wanted to take his morning run. Cold doesn’t seem to bother him one bit when it comes to his morning exercise. Between his sprints, he would take a break and seem to just take it all in.

As we were nearing the top, I caught something out of place in my peripheral vision. Something that stood out like a sore thumb amongst the brown and yellow foliage of winter.

This purple-haired figure on top of a moving black mass could only be one thing…

It’s Plum Pudding hitching a ride on Foxie!

After reaching the top of the hill, Foxie and Plum Pudding headed back to the Chimp House…

But not before a little thrilling adventure!

Plum Pudding ended up in a perilous predicament!

And only Foxie could save her!

This rescue was so dramatic, Jamie had to be a bystander to witness it all unfold!

But nonetheless, Foxie would not give up on her Puddin’! She was able to rescue her and whisk her back to safety!

Bonus Photo of Cy during a game of chase!

“In my day, you had to walk 15 miles in the snow…”

January 17, 2023 by Chad de Bree

Unlike what Anthony reported yesterday, the sun was not out much today. But that didn’t stop Missy and crew from going out onto Young’s Hill!

When they were given access to their outdoor enclosure, they ventured to the same structures as yesterday.

Burrito on the other hand wanted more. He tried to convince me to run around the hill with him.

He thought better of it as the outer edges of the perimeter still have a good deal of snow (thankfully for me since the human side of the fence is covered in snow and mud). Instead, Burrito decided to explore Negra’s Cabin.

His desire to run around Young’s Hill seemed to have sparked the desire in everybody else though. Shortly after, Missy, Annie, Jody, and Jamie made their way to a set of logs that haven’t been seen since Fall.

Jody:

Jody heading down to greet Burrito:

Though they already ventured further than they have been, it still wasn’t enough for some.

Jody on a further structure to gaze at the Yakima River:

Missy sitting amongst her beloved trees:

You might guess what is next…

Missy began her ascent up her tree:

There was a good two minute window where I thought Annie was going to follow Missy up! She would stand and grab the tree, but then let go and sit down. She repeated this a few times. In between each take, she would hype herself up to overcome her fear by rocking and tapping the tree and ground. But alas, today was not the day Annie would make her go at climb the trees.

She did, however, settle on climbing on to the top of the near by structure to be somewhat close to Missy.

After a while, Annie decided it was time to head back inside for lunch. She convinced Missy this is now the plan, and Missy obliged.

Look at that dismount!

After landing a perfect 10 dismount, it was time to head inside to enjoy some lunch!

A Wintry Mix

January 3, 2023 by Chad de Bree

This has been one wild winter so far. From below zero temperatures to nearly 40º back to below freezing in the span of a couple of days, it’s sometimes hard to tell what the weather is actually going to be from day-to-day. We check the weather constantly, sometimes multiple times a day, because what was being reported in the morning, can drastically change by the afternoon. Whatever the weather brings us, however, our jobs as caregivers is to be flexible to give the residents as many options as possible given the circumstances.

As Anna wrote last week, some pathways were cleared to allow Burrito’s group the option to go on the snow-covered Young’s Hill if they choose to. Today was one of those days where they chose to.

Burrito looking for the best spot of snow to snack on.

Missy went straight for the closest, tallest structure she could get to so she could take in her surroundings…

Which Burrito also wanted to see.

Jody was very calculated in her choice of snow to snack on.

Not just any snow would do!

Though Annie spent the most time outside, she always would look back at the door leading inside.

But once Missy headed back in, so did Annie.

With Burrito not far behind.

Though we may never know what they are exactly thinking, it did seem like they were taking in as much outside as they could today. We do have a forecast of wintry mixes coming up for the next couple of days. And before we know it, the snow will begin to melt and Spring will be here (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). So might as well grab as many snow snacks while you can!

Some bonus photos:

Negra grunting at me as I greeted her this morning.

Gordo eating last night’s dinner from the top of the firehose.

Betsy chowing down on some hay yesterday when it was bright and sunny.
