Two is Better than One!

March 22, 2023 by Kelsi

Today was absolutely beautiful! The sun was out, the chimps were enjoying their warm greenhouses, and the seven had another lunch Hill forage! I know I always talk about little moments in the chimp house: the moments that just kind of make your heart melt and remind you how grateful you are that these chimps are in sanctuary. Today was full of those little moments.

1. Negra was the first chimp out of the raceway for the lunch forage! She was going everywhere trying to find the potatoes and chow. It was very nice to watch.

2. Annie, as you may know, has already been spotted with her sweatbands! Today, she was either wearing them or carrying them in her pelvic pocket (a hot pink and green one).

3. Lucky was also spotted wearing a green sweatband (not pictured).

4. Foxie gave me her doll through the raceway so that we could go take a quiet walk around a little bit of Young’s Hill.

5. One of our interns gave us a pair of her Doc Martins that Jamie had been eyeing for awhile. We gave Jamie those boots today and she seemed elated to have them <3!

6. Cy’s group were out in the greenhouses for most of the day, all grooming each other.

Bonus photos!

Kelsi, I ALWAYS enjoy hearing “Negra was first out the door”! And did she go all the way up to the cabin!? Past her usual stump?!

Dear, sweet Annie-Bird, you look as beautiful as ever! And that green blanket looks comfy!

I second Linda’s sentiment: it is heartening to read “Negra was the first out the door” to her hill.

Ah, the call of the Annie Bird can be heard near Young’s Hill. Spring has returned to the Sanctuary at last.

Thank you for the lovely sunny photos. Annie, if you’re a gal whose waist is sweatband size, well Honey, you wear it well.

How I seethe with envy! What is Annie’s secret for remaining slender after all these years?

Wow. What a treat to have a video of Annie…..just Annie….beautiful Annie…..and her amazing nesting techniques…..and her Annie Bird sounds…..and her fashionable waist bands.

Does anyone else find comfort in the traditions of Annie wearing her colorful bands every spring or discovering that Negra (nesting Negra!!) was first out of the chute for a warm sunny day forage? Ahhh yes, it’s officially springtime now and the sanctuary is coming to life!

Thanks Kelsi! Your video and photos made my day.

Making it almost unanimous. I was thrilled to see the photo of Negra outside looking almost happy, and overjoyed to see the line “Negra was first out the door.” Keep giving us old ladies a good name, Dear Negra.

Sweet, sweet, Annie. Spring has arrived when her sweatbands make an appearance.

Someone asked this the other day, and I am curious too – does Jamie ever try to wear her boots? I don’t like to see chimps forced to wear human clothes etc but it would be amusing if Jamie tried a pair of her boots on and had a strut about! As long as she didn’t hurt herself of course.

when she can get thrm on, sometimes! Look for their YT video “sharing”, you’ll see she got one on, a long one with a zipper. And someone had some special ones made for her once, which accommodate the “thumb” on that foot

Thank you for the closeup pictures of Annie! So intiguing to see her up-close and personal! I am fascinated to see her twirling her blankets around to create a nest. Although, in the wild, the chimps must make nests out of branches and brush, this, captivity, version must be more comfortable!
