Spring Dreaming

March 12, 2019 by Elizabeth

Winter has hit us pretty hard over the past month or so, and while the chimpanzees aren’t complaining (snow is a delicacy!), the humans are ready to move on. Spring is one of everyone’s favorite times of year at the sanctuary – the air is warm, the grass is soft and sweet, and life is good. Can you feel it? Here’s to looking forward (by looking back):

Apricity

March 7, 2019 by Anna

While searching around for the perfect way to describe this sparkling morning at the sanctuary, I found this outdated word you sadly can’t find in most dictionaries anymore:

Apricity, noun: The warmth of the sun in winter

Today we celebrate apricity!

Happy Birthday, Jennifer!

March 2, 2019 by Katelyn

Today was sponsored by Jennifer Swift who shared this beautiful message:

“This day is my 50th birthday and I’m celebrating by honoring all of the animals that have touched my life and taught me about myself.”

Jennifer, this is so lovely! It lifts our hearts to hear of your love and compassion for the animals you’ve shared your life with and we’re so touched to know the chimpanzees are included. Thank you for making a difference in their lives in return, we so appreciate you! Happy, happiest of birthdays to you!

Just as each of the chimpanzees are, Jody is an inspiration every single day for not only what she’s endured in life, but how she thrives in spite of it. Every day, a celebration.

Seasons of Jo

February 28, 2019 by Anna

Jody’s beautiful face is so expressive. Her prominent brow ridge and intense gaze are most noticeable when she enters Young’s Hill for the first time each day. We see the same look of wonderment come over her each morning, day after day, season after season.

There’s more than one way to remove snow

February 18, 2019 by Katelyn

Good thing it keeps snowing because it’s incredible how much snow these chimpanzees eat! Given Annie’s tactic, she must be immune to freeze brain:

Meanwhile outside, in a turn of events, it was Jody who marched out onto the hill while good friend, Foxie, stayed behind and watched after her:

Cold Feet

February 17, 2019 by Kelsi

Burr… The chimps could not wait to get outside, or well most of them! Jody and Foxie rushed through the raceway onto Young’s Hill followed by Missy and Annie. Jody quickly decided it was cold and turned around, as did Annie and Missy. However, Foxie explored a little bit longer before turning around. Jody like the kind friend she is waited for everyone including Foxie to make it back safe inside!

All the ladies rushing the door:

Foxie and Dora going for a brisk walk:

Jody waiting for everyone to come inside:

And eating a snow snack:

Jamie also grabbing a quick snow snack:

Jamie warmed herself up by grabbing a great read (the boot magazine from yesterday) while laying on a barrel watching volunteers clean:

Today is for Arlene

February 14, 2019 by Katelyn

Michael sponsored this special, lovely day of sanctuary in honor of his wife, Arlene, to wish her  Happy Valentine’s Day!

Michael and Arlene, thank you so much for always holding the chimpanzees in your hearts and for celebrating, and contributing to, the myriad of ways love is present in each of their lives. We’re so very fortunate to have you as part of our chimp family. Have a beautiful day!
