It’s still snowing

February 11, 2019 by Katelyn

February appears to be making up for lost winter time. Our relatively mild season so far has suddenly found us in the midst of weeks of below freezing days and nights and inches upon inches of snow. The chimpanzees still have access to their outdoor habitat during the day if they choose to, but they all seemed more than content to stay within the warmth of the chimp house playroom and front rooms. That doesn’t mean they have been busy all day though and really, they like to do most of the same things we humans do on snow days. Eating, having a little fun with snow, staying cozy and taking naps, hanging out with friends, drinking warm tea, creative projects, playing, reading…

Jody enjoyed several blankets warm from the dryer to take an after breakfast snooze while we cleaned the playroom:

We continued the snow snack sculptures which the chimps visited throughout the day.

Jody:

And in between all of her folio projects, Jamie took some time to enjoy her current favorite read, “Dwell” magazine:

In memory of Susan

February 8, 2019 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary is sponsored annually by Jen and James Douglas in memory of their beloved friend, Susan von Beck Turner, and the legacy of compassion, care and strength she gave those who knew her. “Susan touched the lives of many dogs and humans and made them better.” Learn more about Susan’s life here.

Jen and James, thank you so much for not only holding space for Susan’s memory, but for the love and inspiration she brought to the world. We so appreciate your including the chimpanzees in the beautiful ripple effect of Susan’s life.

A Dietary Staple

February 5, 2019 by Elizabeth

There’s one item that’s part of any self-respecting Pacific Northwest chimpanzee’s diet.

The Good Life

February 3, 2019 by Kelsi

There is something about watching all the chimps run out the raceway and onto Young’s Hill in the morning that just fills your heart with joy. I mean how could it not! It is nice to know they get to look forward to things in their life whether they are big or small.

Burrito is a little excited to be outside with everyone:

Morning Exercise

January 29, 2019 by Elizabeth

When Anna opened the door to Young’s Hill this morning, the chimpanzees couldn’t get out there fast enough. It’s a crisp, sunny morning – the perfect weather for exploring outside with your friends.

Foxie, Annie (kissing Foxie’s hand), and Missy:

Negra, who usually prefers the warmth of her nest, got out and found a little snow to eat:

Annie soaked up the sun:

Missy:

Jody took in the view from her favorite spot:

Foxie’s priority was to lick as much frost as she could get her tongue on:

Burrito:

The beauty of a mid-winter’s day

January 28, 2019 by Katelyn

It was glorious this morning. Glittery, frost covered fields under cerulean skies, hawk cries sailing through the air and beautiful chimpanzees with sunlit hearts.

Foxie, Dora and Annie. Guh! My heart!….

Best Kind of Sundays

January 27, 2019 by Kelsi

Negra was really into the weather today and who could blame her. It’s 51 degrees outside in January! Seriously, these chimps spent all day in the Greenhouse or on Young’s Hill, so it was a quiet and content chimp house today…

Negra out on Young’s Hill this morning:

Later Neggie found some snow/ice and set up shop on a comfy platform with a great view:

Foxie decided to keep Neggie company:

And I think Neggie didn’t mind:

Negra and Foxie’s view this morning:

Meanwhile, Missy (left) and Annie (right) were having an epic game of chase, as Foxie observed on the side lines:

Jody came out to enjoy the sun:

Burrito and Foxie also foraged for some snow/ice:
