Lunch with Cy

September 30, 2021 by Kelsi

The other day Cy decided he didn’t want to have his lunch in the playroom, he wanted to eat in the front rooms. I can’t blame him, the front rooms have the best people watching and Cy likes people! We put all his lunch in the food chute and he enjoyed it at his leisure. Part of lunch with Cy is just sitting with him and from time to time he will put a finger out to touch the back of your hand. After lunch, it was back to reading magazines!

We just started adding Jamieween enrichment onto the wish-list today! If we are out of Jamieween items by the time you get on the wish-list we have lots of other things we need.

As for intros today, here is a photo of Terry, Cy, Mave, and Willy B all grooming on one small bench. And yes they had larger benches and other rooms, but they all wanted to be on this tiny bench together :).

Learning to Trust

September 29, 2021 by J.B.

One the challenges associated with doing introductions, besides the introductions themselves, is getting all of the different individuals and groups where they need to be. You have to pull certain individuals from their groups temporarily and move them to the space where the intro will be held. Other chimps have to clear that area. While all of this is going on we have to clean. And when an intro has gone on long enough, the chimps need to split up in the right order so they can go back with their groups. It’s like that puzzle where the fox, the chicken, and the bag of grain have to be taken across the river in a boat, except in this case everyone in the boat is also spitting at you and threatening to capsize it. Tonight, Kelsi has the pleasure of getting everyone to the other side of the river safely, which is why I am writing the blog in her place.

Today we picked up the with introduction that we postponed yesterday. At that time, Willy B, Mave, and Honey B were engaged in a little too much aggressive behavior at the mesh with Cy, Rayne, and Lucky for us to proceed in the time we had. One thing we’re seeing this time around is that Mave is not always going to lead the way as she did during attempts to integrate her group with the Cle Elum Seven. In fact, Mave has often taken longer to warm up during group intros at the mesh than her group mates. This initial aloofness, and at times aggression, eventually fades and she solicits attention and grooming from the others. Fortunately, this morning we planned some extra time for Mave to make up her mind and eventually it was clear that she was ready.

The group of six came together in the front rooms with a chorus of pant grunts, and soon they were chasing, wrestling, and laughing. Mave and Rayne engaged in a raucous wrestling match. I always hold my breath when they play like this during intros, and this time that kind of fear was justified, as Mave soon became overwhelmed and screamed. Her scream, amplified by the tentativeness of the whole situation, led the group to pile up in a brief conflict. Kelsi, Jen, and the other staff members supporting them kept their cool and separated the chimps temporarily. As the fight resulted from a simple misunderstanding during play, there were no hard feelings and the group was quickly reunited with just a couple of boo boos to memorialize the event.

The boys came together to groom after that, which is a great sign. The previous morning, I was watching them emerge from their nests after their sleepover. Male chimps like to display in the morning, and their displays lent an air of tension to the situation. They seemed to want to interact, but both were too nervous to make the first move. Luckily, chimpanzees have a process for just this type of scenario. They came together across the mesh – right next to an open doorway – and groomed. After establishing trust with the mesh between them, Willy B walked through the doorway and they continued grooming face to face.

Once today’s group of six seemed relatively stable, it was time to give them access to a playroom. This is another sign of trust – that the caregivers trust the cohesion of the group enough to temporarily lose them to a larger space where breaking up a conflict becomes more difficult. They did wonderfully. And just to make Kelsi’s day, they split back up into their original groups of three for the night without too much difficulty.

I have such admiration for our staff, and such appreciation for Jen who has led us through this process. I’d love it if we get all nine together someday. But we may not. The process continues and soon we’ll be getting Terry, Dora, and Gordo in one some of these smaller group dates. Whether we’re ultimately successful or not, some of the relationships that have already formed are too good to let slip away, and Willy B, Mave, and Honey B will either have a new family or endless play dates in their future.

What A Day Pt. II

September 28, 2021 by Chad de Bree

Today was another day! Yesterday, Cy, Lucky, Willy B, and Honey B met all together and even had a sleepover together. Overall, the sleepover went well. So today we decide to let Rayne and Mave partake the meetings. There were some ups and downs with the six(!) chimpanzees. We ultimately decided to just let them meet at the mesh for today. I wasn’t able to get enough photos or footage to piece together a video of today’s meetings… however… caregiver Sam was ever so gracious enough to allow me to share the video she was working on of the meetings that took place on Sunday!

Along with Sam’s video, please enjoy some of the photos I was able to take before introductions. I was not able to choose between some, so I had some other caregivers help chose which ones to use, but the consensus was to post two of each.

Though virtually the same, small little nuances make each photo different!

Mave in her Greenhouse:

And one final photo of Lucky!

Snippets

September 24, 2021 by J.B.

Here are a few moments that I captured on my phone throughout the past week.

People often ask if it’s difficult to care for chimpanzees without being able to touch them outside of the very limited contact we have through the mesh. Perhaps it’s a function of the institutional cultures in which we were trained, but it’s not something I really think about. Nor do I care much about it when it does cross my mind. They have their world, we have ours, and there are clearly-defined, logical rules for the areas where those two worlds meet for the sake of everyone’s safety. The way we interact with the chimps in our care becomes natural and comfortable for both them and us, and pushing those boundaries does nothing but put our own desires above their best interests.

That being said, there’s not a person on earth that’s seen Mave in action and not wanted to be enveloped in her soft, fuzzy embrace.

So sue me.

Give Them Smoulder

September 22, 2021 by Kelsi

I think we can all agree that Willy B is one handsome chimp, Jody might even use the word hunk! This morning we changed up the routine and let Willy B’s group out onto the Courtyard first. Willy B seemed pretty excited because he went straight to door W which leads right out to the Courtyard and waited for me to give him access. Willy B spent the whole morning out there! The sun was so warm, he decided to lay down on the boardwalk and bask in it. While relaxing on the boardwalk I snapped a few photos of Willy B, I mean look at him! He has this almost smouldering or brooding look.

Stopped to Smell the Roses

September 21, 2021 by Chad de Bree

Today was a busy day! It took us a little longer than usual to clean because as J.B. mentioned a few days ago, somebody (I won’t mention any names) held out in allowing us to close off areas so we could clean them. Though we were eventually able to close them off to clean later throughout the day, we had a staff meeting once cleaning was done for the day. As Caregiver Kelsi has mentioned in the past, days when their are staff meetings can be hectic. So the equation of a hold out and staff meeting, my plans for a well developed blog about enrichment have gone out the window for today. But never fear, here are some photos I started to take throughout the day as I was plotting my original blog theme.

Jody returning from her morning patrol with a handful of rose hips before breakfast.
Jamie with her own branch of rose hips she collected during today’s browse. We started to include rose hips in the browse rotation because Jamie’s group really seems to like them and there are plenty growing around the sanctuary for all to enjoy. You can see a photo of Rayne with some from a few days ago here!
And last but not least! Honey B!

HOOT! is tonight!

September 18, 2021 by Diana

Here we are, skipping another in-person event due to the pandemic. In-person events are a lot of work, but there’s an unmistakable energy that happens when you get a group of people together in one space with a common mission and a drive to give.

The crucial funds raised are of course the main focus, but that sense of a shared purpose–the hope and the love–is what is the most encouraging aspect of an event.

The sanctuary is incredibly fortunate to have you, supporters and champions of the chimpanzees. With this blog, we are exposed to that energy, albeit in an online context, every day.

Preparing for tonight’s second virtual HOOT! gala has been filled with moments of nostalgia. Some of the people who you will see and hear from tonight during the event are from the early days of the sanctuary. Even some of the auction items have been unearthed from years ago (like the Troll Mania book created for our 2011 event).

The staff went way back to our childhoods for some of the auction items, with each of us choosing a favorite children’s book (see auction items #10-20).

The pandemic has often been described as a collective pause. Of course the sanctuary doesn’t have the option to pause, and the last year has been one of the busiest times in our history. There hasn’t been a lot of time to reflect.

Tonight, though, as we watch the virtual event in our respective homes, together in spirit, we have the chance to reflect on what we have accomplished as a group, each with our individualized efforts, to provide a home for chimpanzees who had no where else to go.

Humans failed these chimpanzees, but now our collective humanity has saved them. It’s a giving back that will always be incomplete, but that doesn’t make it any less worth the effort.

To all of the staff, board members, volunteers, donors, followers, and supporters, thank you for being here for them. Let’s celebrate together all that we’ve accomplished and the continued hope for the future.

Bid on auction items through Sunday on the auction site and watch the event on Facebook and YouTube live streaming starting at 6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. Eastern. We’ll be with you!
