A Day in the Life

September 13, 2016 by Elizabeth

9:00am: Up the winding driveway…

Good morning, sanctuary!

web_sanctuary_morning_ek_photo-4-7

Ellie the elk started the day in her favorite spot under the observation deck:

web_ellie_under_observation_deck_ek_photo-3-7

Volunteer caregivers Denice and Sandra set to work preparing breakfast:

web_volunteers_denice_sandra_prepare_breakfast_ek_photo-5-9

Usually when we arrive for the day this time of year there are several chimps outside in the greenhouse. Today it was just Negra cuddled under a blanket:

Soon breakfast was ready!

web_breakfast_tray_ek_photo-2-6

Our typical routine is to serve a small snack in the indoor front rooms first thing to entice the chimps out of the greenhouse so we can close it off for cleaning. Volunteer caregiver-in-training Yuri offered the chimps some grapefruit while I closed and locked the doors leading to the greenhouse.

Negra is not always a people person, but this morning as she ate her grapefruit she was feeling extra affectionate as she offered her back to Sandra for a knuckle rub and offered Denice a kiss.

web_negra_kiss_volunteer_denice_ek_photo-5-7

We all checked the doors and locks to make sure it was safe to unlock the greenhouse:

web_volunteer_yuri_checks_ek_photo-1-6

and then got to work!

web_volunteers_sandra_denice_yuri_clean_gh_ek_photo-2-5

Afterward Yuri double-checked locks on the greenhouse door:

web_volunteer_yuri_check_locks_after_cleaning_gh_ek_photo-3-6

and we started the first batch of dirty toys soaking in the tub:

web_toys_soak_in_tub_ek_photo-4-5

and the first load of dirty blankets in the washer:

web_laundry_ek_photo-1-4

Then Yuri served the rest of breakfast in the greenhouse:

web_volunteer_yuri_serve_breakfast_gh_ek_photo-5-8

and wrote in his training notebook:

web_volunteer_yuri_write_in_training_notebook_ek_photo-2-2

Next we tackled the playroom, which is the largest indoor space at the sanctuary. We cleaned upstairs:

web_volunteers_sandra_denice_clean_loft_pr_ek_photo-2-7

and downstairs:

web_volunteers_denice_yuri_sandra_clean_pr_ek_photo-5-5

and when we were done, set up a little tea party for the chimps:

web_tea_party_pr_ek_photo-5-10

While we cleaned the playroom, the chimps enjoyed the warm greenhouse.

Annie:

web_annie_gh_ek_photo-1-3

Burrito:

web_burrito_bite_caging_gh_ek_photo-5

We run through a series of safety checks before giving the chimps access to Young’s Hill each day, so I did those while Denice, Yuri, and Sandra wrapped up the playroom.

web_check_locks_gates_yh_ek_photo-4-6

Foxie was the first to squeeze through the door to the hill as it was opening:

web_foxie_squeeze_through_door_y_ek_photo-3-2

But she was quickly joined by Jody, Negra, Missy, and Annie:

web_jody_foxie_negra_missy_annie_walk_onto_yh_ek_photo-3-3

Our last big cleaning task for the morning was the front rooms, which we started after a short break:

web_yuri_clean_frs_ek_photo-1-2

After some time outside, Foxie wandered into the playroom to spend some quality time with her dolls:

web_foxie_play_with_dolls_pr_ek_photo-4-2

and Jamie requested a drink of water from the hose:

web_volunteer_caregiver_yuri_give_jamie_drink_from_hose_pr_ek_photo-2-1

Since we had plenty of cleaners to handle the front rooms, Denice started on some kitchen tasks. She prepared some chow bags:

web_volunteer_denice_make_chow_bags_ek_photo-5-3

and put some potatoes in the oven for dinner:

web_volunteer_denice_bake_potatoes_ek_photo-5-1

After cleaning, Yuri and Denice picked some veggies from the chimps’ garden for lunch:

web_lunch_tray_ek_img_7132

web_volunteer_yuri_serve_burrito_lunch_gh_ek_img_7135

While Yuri served lunch in the greenhouse, Sandra kept the endless laundry moving along:

web_volunteer_sandra_laundry_ek_photo-3-1

After lunch, it was finally time for some fun. Sandra and Jamie groomed in the greenhouse:

web_jamie_groom_volunteer_sandra_gh_ek_img_7122

while Yuri and Burrito went for a walk around Young’s Hill.

web_burrito_perimeter_walk_with_volunteer_yuri_yh_ek_img_7143

After the walk, Burrito was in the mood for a little tug of war:

web_burrito_play_tug_of_war_volunteer_sandra_gh_ek_img_7138

A little later in the afternoon JB, Diana, and Katelyn came up from the office and we did some PRT (Positive Reinforcement Training) with the chimps.

Missy presenting her wrist for Katelyn:

web_missy_staff_caregiver_katelyn_prt_gh_ek_photo-1

We ended the day with a dinner forage in the playroom. Jamie used a plate to collect her food:

Burrito:

Annie:

And finally, it was goodnight.

Journey to recovery

September 4, 2016 by Keri

Each day the Cle Elum Seven continue on their journey to recovery from their former lives in the laboratory. In some ways, it’s hard to believe they’ve been at the sanctuary for over eight years now. Thinking back to the early days and years (and looking at photos from that time), it really hits home how far each of them has come on their own journey. As the days blend together into years, we have witnessed their individual transformations as they break through the shells of their former selves and continue to test the boundaries of what is comfortable to them.

Take Burrito for instance. Even as recent as a few years ago, he really preferred to stay on the ground to forage and explore, unlike Missy, who climbed everything in sight. But more often these days, he can be found climbing and spending time on top of the highest structures scattered throughout Young’s Hill.

Just this morning, he climbed to the top of this structure, walked out on the beam, sat for a minute looking at his surroundings before climbing back down. He’s not quite as graceful a climber as Missy, but he’s getting there.

web_Burrito_walk_top_beam_structure_look_down_YH_kh_IMG_6006

The chimps’ transformations are only happening because they’ve been given the opportunity to live the rest of their lives in sanctuary. They’ve each been given a chance at a new life, one in which they so much deserve. And it’s only been possible, because a whole world of people (including you), have taken each of them into your hearts. Because of you, Negra now feels comfortable to venture to the top of Young’s Hill to forage, alone. Because of you, Jamie and Foxie have an endless supply of boots and dolls to call their own; Annie feels safe and secure enough to spend time alone enjoying her surroundings. Because of you, Missy can run (let’s face it, it’s more of a full-on sprint), leap, balance and climb to her hearts content. Jody has blankets aplenty to build elaborate nests with. And finally Burrito. You’ve given Burrito the time he needed to feel secure enough to climb to new heights this year. More and more, we’re seeing him on top of the various structures scattered throughout Young’s Hill; something his former self spent very little time doing.

Happy International Primate Day!

September 1, 2016 by Anna

September 1st is International Primate Day everybody! I honestly didn’t know such a day existed until recently, but I’m glad it does. The term “primate” is a biological classification, which of course encompasses humans, but I think this day was meant to celebrate the non-human variety. There are a lot of terms that get thrown around interchangeably when we talk about chimpanzees, some of which are accurate, and some not so much. I think one of the most common mistakes humans use when they talk about chimps is to call them “monkeys.” Chimpanzees are in fact large bodied apes. One good way to determine if you are looking at an ape vs. a monkey? Look for a tail. Chimpanzees and other apes don’t have tails and are generally larger than other primates.

I’m grateful to know all the special primates in my life like Burrito, who was kind enough to pose for photos in the portrait studio this afternoon.

Happy Birthday, Karen!

September 1, 2016 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by the chimps’ (and humans’!) good friend, Ross Barde, in honor of his wife, Karen, on her birthday! Ross and Karen always have the chimps in their hearts and do so much to help ensure they have the best lives possible here at the sanctuary. Thanks to their generosity of gifting us with a heavy duty washer and dryer when our last pair went kaput, the chimps’ stay cozy in epic nests built with the 70 fresh blankets we give them every day. And as a chimp house volunteer, Ross even helps fold all of those blankets when he’s here!

Ross, thank you so much for including the chimps in such a special day with your family. We are so grateful to you and Karen for all you do to make their lives better.

Karen, all of us here at the sanctuary wish you the happiest birthday yet! We hope your day and your heart are full of all that brings you joy and love. Happy Birthday hoots from the chimps! And here’s Burrito throwing out some of best moves in the charm department:

Happy Birthday, Deb!

August 23, 2016 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Bruce Wagman in honor of his wife, Deb, on her birthday. Bruce and Deb have been part of our chimp family since the very beginning. Not only does Bruce volunteer his time as a valued member of our wonderful Board of Directors, but Deb is a volunteer caregiver in the chimp house, coming from out of state to complete her shifts and care for the chimps. They both do so much to improve the lives of so many animals and we’re grateful for their friendship to the chimps (and humans!). Bruce shared this beautiful message about Deb:

“Some people just shape things, and make them come out better. They move through their lives with their influence expanding in waves. At home, Deborah has provided the ultimate in loving parenting to all her children, all of whom have had four legs and tails – and each one of them has flourished under her loving hands. At the Marin Humane Society, hundreds of dogs have benefited from her patience and attention. At the Marine Mammal Center, abandoned, stray and injured seals and sea lions and others knew the careful detail which she brought to each one. And at CSNW, she has become a friend to the Cle Elum Seven, dedicated to their care and falling in love with each of them on every one of her many visits to them over the years. It is certainly the case that the Seven have done more for Deborah than she has done for them, but her willingness to keep giving her all to them is an inspiration to us all.”

Bruce, thank you so much for sharing such a special day with the chimpanzees! We are full of gratitude for the difference you and Deb have made, and continue to make, in the lives of so many of our fellow animals.

Deb, we are thrilled to be celebrating with you today! We hope you have an amazing day full of all the love and comfort that you share with so many others. And Burrito would probably send some birthday hoots to you. Happy Birthday!!:

A Guy and His Food

August 21, 2016 by Elizabeth

One of my favorite mood-lifters is watching Burrito eat. He’s not picky about food; he just wants as much as possible, as often as possible.
