Annie

Sunday Stroll

February 27, 2022 by Sam Jones

There was a break in the clouds this afternoon and most everyone in Jamie’s group was outside making their way around Young’s Hill. I sat for awhile enjoying watching them all over the hill and climbing on all the structures. Negra was not far away, but was in the Greenhouse surrounded by blankets in a nice big blanket nest.

Jamie on Young’s Hill.

Missy enjoying time on the hill.

Jody found some pine to snack on.

Annie and Burrito walking around Young’s Hill together.

Foxie waiting for everyone to come back towards the Greenhouse.

Katelyn got this photo of Jamie all comfy in her nest this morning!

On the other side of the chimp house Honey B was ready to have her photo taken.

Willy B was enjoying the peanuts he got from the daytime enrichment.

I was very impressed with how Cy was getting raisins out of the raisin boards.

Dora and Rayne were making good use of the big wolf blanket.

Rayne later in the afternoon.

Blissful Sunday

February 13, 2022 by Sam Jones

It was another really nice day outside and most of the chimpanzees in Burrito’s group were out on Young’s Hill all morning. This warmer weather has the chimpanzees and humans all in great moods! Burrito was back to having Chad run around the hill, while Jamie raced Katelyn who was driving the Gator. Also, Burrito was very determined to get some ice out of the tire this morning and spent a long time working on it.

Success!

Annie was all over Young’s Hill. Every time I looked she was in a different spot.

Missy in front and Annie walking behind her.

Foxie made her way to Jamie’s tower.

On the other side everyone was hanging out in their warm Greenhouses for the afternoon.

Gordo was watching a grooming party going on above him.

And snacking on some bamboo.

Honey B needed a rest after a long game of chase!

Earlier today Cy was relaxing after breakfast.

Gordo too!

Bananas for Kongs!

February 9, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Today all three groups got food puzzles as daytime enrichment. The puzzles were Kongs filled with oats and mashed bananas and they were a hit to say the least.

We all need some sunshine!

February 6, 2022 by Sam Jones

Like Diana said in her blog post yesterday, the chimpanzees are really enjoying the warmer weather! It’s in the 40’s today, but with the sun it feels so nice outside! They spent a lot of time out on Young’s Hill soaking up the sun. Get ready for an assortment of Jamie enjoying the sun.

Foxie on her way to the top of Negra’s cabin. She didn’t forget to bring her doll with her!

Shortly after Foxie made it to the top she was joined by Missy.

And then Burrito. Foxie and Burrito watched Missy walk across the firehose to the other platform.

Annie was enjoying some sun on the other platform.

Jamie, Annie, and Burrito trying to spy on the neighbors.

Burrito coming back inside.

Foxie before breakfast this morning.

On the other side of the building the chimpanzees spent time in their warm Greenhouses up high. I was only able to get a couple photos of them today.

Terry after breakfast.

Cy spent some of his afternoon flipping through magazines. In case you haven’t see our Amazon Wish List yet, you can visit it here. There’s lots of goodies for the chimpanzees including some magazines for Cy 🙂

Let it snow?

January 9, 2022 by Sam Jones

No, just kidding don’t let it snow anymore. At least right now! I grew up in Ohio so I’m used to snow, but this much snow? Not so much. Living in the Georgia mountains the past couple years I kept saying how much I missed being around snow. I think I just got more snow than what I asked for. At least it’s beautiful to look at and the chimpanzees are still enjoying all of their snow snacks.

Like the blog yesterday (What Now?) mentioned, the chimpanzees are making good use of their Greenhouses! The heaters are keeping them pretty warm and the sun was out for most of the day, so it was a good day to be out there. Here are some photos from how the chimpanzees spent their time in the Greenhouses.

Annie seemed very comfortable in her nest.

Missy on the move!

On the other side of the building Cy was looking very majestic in the Greenhouse.

Of course Lucky was too.

Rayne was peering down at me from the mesh above. This square is here so we can see while we operate a door between the Greenhouses.

In the other Greenhouse Willy B was hard at work on the hanging Frisbee puzzles his group got as enrichment for the afternoon.

While most others were in the Greenhouses, Honey B and I were playing a game of chase. She kept stopping by this window because normally we would run outside of the building and meet her there.

This is what the outside of the window looks like today!

Bonus photo from today: Rayne in a box!

Icicle season

December 19, 2021 by Sam Jones

Negra, with Jamie behind her, was the first one by the door today when I gave her group access to Young’s Hill. She spent a good amount of time enjoying handfuls of snow!

Jamie, Annie, and Foxie getting their turn for some snow.

After we cleaned the seven’s playroom we filled up one of their tubs with snow and put some icicles in it. We had to to tell volunteer Lisa to save some for the chimps, since she wanted to eat it all.

After the chimpanzees got access back to the playroom Jamie was the first one to the tub of goodies.

The chimps on the other side of the building also got to enjoy some icicles and snow.

Gordo was first to investigate.

He picked up some icicles, but then went straight for the snow.

Rayne also came over to grab some icicles.

Snow was slowly melting and sliding down the roof of the Greenhouse and Cy was keeping an eye on it.

In the other Greenhouse Honey B was ready for a game of chase.

Bonus photos from after breakfast this morning.

Negra with her oranges.

Burrito with a mouth full of chow.

We have lots of fun things on our Amazon wish list for the Holidays! If you are interested you can check it out here!

CSI: Chimp House

December 15, 2021 by Sofia Castro-Loza

One of the many reasons why chimpanzees should never be pets is their natural destructive behavior. On the daily basis we enter enclosures for cleaning and find destroyed toys, ripped blankets, broken night time enrichment, and on many occasions stuffed animals with severed limbs and stuffing coming out. This is why we follow rigorous rules that dictate the type enrichment and toys that each group is allowed to have. Ranging from choking hazards, to possible obstructions if ingested each item is checked by at least two caregivers before the item is placed inside an enclosure to ensure that the chimpanzees, as individuals and as groups will be safe. Every item that is placed inside is potentially going to be destroyed, and sometimes we encounter crime scenes that may never be solved. I mean we could, we can just watch security footage, but working around mysteries is more intriguing.

Case #1

First on the scene: Special Agent de Bree

Victim: Stuffed teddy bear

Cause of death: Severe stuffingloss by limb amputation and decapitation. Strangulation has not been ruled out.

Location: Greenhouse 1

Evidence collected: Plaid ribbon scarf

Case #2

First on the scene: Special Agent Castro-Loza

Victim: Stuffed tiger

Cause of death: Severe stuffingloss by amputation of left hind leg and tail.

Location: Front Room 3

Evidence collected: Unopened pumpkin seed

Number of suspects: 7

But three individuals matched our previous offense data base. Jamie, Annie, and Burrito are on the top of the suspect list pending investigation and forensic analysis.
