Icicle season

December 19, 2021 by Sam Jones

Negra, with Jamie behind her, was the first one by the door today when I gave her group access to Young’s Hill. She spent a good amount of time enjoying handfuls of snow!

Jamie, Annie, and Foxie getting their turn for some snow.

After we cleaned the seven’s playroom we filled up one of their tubs with snow and put some icicles in it. We had to to tell volunteer Lisa to save some for the chimps, since she wanted to eat it all.

After the chimpanzees got access back to the playroom Jamie was the first one to the tub of goodies.

The chimps on the other side of the building also got to enjoy some icicles and snow.

Gordo was first to investigate.

He picked up some icicles, but then went straight for the snow.

Rayne also came over to grab some icicles.

Snow was slowly melting and sliding down the roof of the Greenhouse and Cy was keeping an eye on it.

In the other Greenhouse Honey B was ready for a game of chase.

Bonus photos from after breakfast this morning.

Negra with her oranges.

Burrito with a mouth full of chow.

We have lots of fun things on our Amazon wish list for the Holidays! If you are interested you can check it out here!

It doesn’t matter what season it is, the chimps seem to find something to enjoy all year round. perhaps they haven’t yet learned that human habit of constantly complaining about the weather, and are just so happy to wake up to good food, treats and snuggly blankets for even the worst days.

My favorite words, Sam “Neggie was first out the door”.
    Thank you, Sam!
And Lisa, in case no one has told you lately, you rock! There needs to be a “Lisa” coffee mug next to the coffee machine!

Burrrr. (I’m in Florida. high 85 today)

Any blog starring the Queen gets five stars. I could watch her all day long. She’s just so so beloved.

I love that they embrace a seasonal climate that is so different than their natural habitat. The weather alone is an enrichment for them!

Any way the Lucky Six could access the courtyard while waiting for the Bray?

They haven’t gotten access to the Courtyard yet, but they do enjoy their time in the Chute and Greenhouses (well before the cold spell haha).

I so enjoyed reading about the chimps’ love of snow and icicles. Such great descriptions! Do they have a way of indicating when they’re cold?

they have heated floors! What a luxury! So spoiled LOL. Plus all of those luxurious blankets.

I believe shivering is their sign….I remember Katelyn saying once that Foxie got brain freeze while eating snow, and they gave her warm herbal tea to warm her back up!

They do show signs of shivering when they are cold. I’ve seen this when they are enjoying a lot of snow snacks haha.

These are a few of my favorite things….
Queen Negra with snow covered lips, Burrito with a mouthfull of chow (I sure have missed seeing his precious face!), sandboxes filled with snow and icicles (thank you Lisa!), Jamie, seeing the CA Six enjoying the gifts and curiosities winter brings, and Honey B ready for a game of chase in the warmth of her greenhouse.
…when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad. 🙂

Enjoyable blog showing how much the chimps love the snow. Great pictures showing a day with snow & ice.
