Annie

photos of the day

July 16, 2011 by Diana

First, Lynn brought in some more trolls for Foxie’s birthday and the Troll Olympics. I have become quite familiar with the facial features of troll dolls these past three years, and I noticed one troll in Lynn’s batch whose ears were slightly different than those I had seen before. I realized she reminded me of one of the chimps…

Take a look at the photos below and tell me you think.

Troll doll with chimp ears?:

annie troll?

Annie, also with chimp ears:

I believe there’s a definite resemblance. What do you think?

Enough about troll dolls for the moment, here are some great photos that J.B. took yesterday:

Watermelon Bowls

July 10, 2011 by Jackie

We have some pretty creative folks around here at the sanctuary, but volunteers Stephanie and Katelyn are definitely two of the most creative people I know. Yesterday, the two westsiders (what we Washingtonians call folks from Seattle, or west of the mountains) stayed all day and spent part of the afternoon making watermelon bowls. They cut out the center of the watermelon and filled it with all types of fruits and veggies. I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that Burrito, who literally could not stop food squeaking the whole time, slept good last night.

And from the photos, I think it’s also safe to say that Annie was pretty pleased with the watermelon bowls, too:

Raceway!

July 9, 2011 by Diana

Last night the chimps got the outdoor area back after being locked out for a couple of days while the raceway was under construction. Foxie was the most curious about the new door and door frame.

The raceway was actually constructed off-site using the caging that we removed when we replaced the caged windows with chimpanzee-proof glass. The welders had to make a hole in the current outdoor area and weld the raceway to it.

4th of July Forage (finally)

July 5, 2011 by Jackie

If you “like” us on Facebook, you probably know, yesterday we had some technical difficulties with our website, so I was unable to get the video of yesterday’s lunch forage out to you– until now! The chimps had such an exciting day with lots of yummy treats. The weather was perfect and the food matched the holiday to the T. For lunch, they had corn on the cob (a favorite among everyone), whole raw onions (another favorite, believe it or not), cherries, and (of course) watermelon! The outdoor area was decorated in red, white, and blue, and the afternoon was spent lounging, grooming, and sleeping. Then, that evening, we gave the chimps Field Roast vegan dogs from volunteer Jeani (which resulted in squeaks, squeaks, and more squeaks) and more corn on the cob! Debbie set up a rose and tea forage in the playroom while I served dinner. When we left, they were back to lounging and seemed very content with the day.

Happy Birthday, Neggie!

June 13, 2011 by Jackie

Today is a very special, albeit emotional, day for all of us. Not only does it mark 3 years since the chimps’ arrived at their sanctuary home, the start of their new life, but it is Negra’s honorary birthday, so celebrations abound!

We started out the day with two of Negra’s favorite things: bread (yummy toasted apple cinnamon bread) and night bags. I don’t think there is a more perfect start of a day for Negra. J.B. hit the nail right on the head with our 3rd Anniversary Post when he said that when Negra receives her night bag, in that moment, everything is right in the world. She blinks her eyes in anticipation and is just so, so happy. I have to say it’s my favorite part of each day, as well. Here she is getting her unexpected “Night” bag this morning:

Supporters Dick and Robbi Brown faithfully brought lots of new toys for the party and we decorated the outdoor area with lots and lots of “Happy Birthday” streamers. We set up a lunch forage which consisted of mini bell peppers, lettuce (another one of Negra’s favorite foods), bananas, cherries, and pomegranates!

Negra went for the lettuce first (she’s got her priorities straight):

but she was also very excited about the mini sweet bell peppers:

Annie with her bananas. She had banana mush all over her face!

Pomegranates were a really exciting treat too, since they are out of season and we haven’t gotten them in a while. Here’s Foxie shoveling one in her mouth:

And Burrito, doing the same:

I love how red his lips get when he eats pomegranates!

Here’s the birthday lady gazing out towards Young’s Hill:

And of course the celebration is not over! Tonight, they are having corn on the cob, sweet potato fries, more bread, juice, and of course, as it has approximately 1,095 times, the day will end with another night bag. Thanks so much to all that contributed to the party!
