Welcome Sabrina!

March 24, 2023 by Anna

Last month we added our newest staff caregiver Sabrina to the team! Sabrina comes to CSNW with a wealth of  experience from her former job at Chimp Haven in Shreveport, Louisiana.  The last few weeks she has been learning our cleaning and safety protocols and starting to sow the seeds of friendship with the chimpanzees.  Next on the training docket she will learn to operate the remote doors and shift the chimps around their enclosures for cleaning.  At that point she will also take on the task of blog writer and get the opportunity to thoroughly introduce herself to all our followers.

Welcome aboard Sabrina, we’re so lucky to have you!

Simple Moments

March 16, 2023 by Anna

I couldn’t quite come up with the right written thread to connect all of today’s photos together. I simply present, a few moments from this *almost spring day.

Jody on Young’s Hill this afternoon. Notice it almost looks like there’s some green grass peeking out already!

Mave grooming her BFF Dora:

Rayne lounging in the Riverview Greenhouse:

I never quite imagined just how enriching having a neighboring group of chimps could be for Burrito in particular. He spends a great deal of his free time watching and listening to the goings on in Cy’s group.  It comes as no surprise to me that he is vigorously tuned in on all things dramatic. I myself am a reality TV buff and there’s something so enticing about enthusiastically watching a spectacle that you don’t have to be involved in.

Burrito is always sure to grab prime seating on a barrel so he can see his neighbors in the chute, all he needs is a bowl of popcorn and he’d be set:

Mave on the Mend

March 9, 2023 by Anna

Earlier this week there was a fight in Cy’s group and Mave sustained an injury to her sexual swelling. It was a deep enough wound that Dr. Zamzow made the decision to organize a medical procedure in the clinic yesterday so she could thoroughly clean out the wound and help it heal. This was also a bonus opportunity to give Mave a thorough physical and dental cleaning, including an abdominal ultrasound, since Mave had previously had a large ovarian cyst removed before moving to the sanctuary.

Sofia doing the dental cleaning, Mekenzie, CRNA monitoring the anesthesia machine, and sonographer Mariah and Dr. Zamzow performing Mave’s abdominal ultrasound for her physical:

This morning nurse Honey B gave Mave’s toes a thorough inspection.

Mave relaxing in her recovery room:

Bonus! Jody and her cherry tomatoes:

The Life (and death) of a Stuffed Toy at a Chimpanzee Sanctuary

March 2, 2023 by Anna

Burrito playing with giant stuffed toys seriously never gets old. The sanctuary staff recently went through First Aid/CPR training as a team and watching this video made me pretty impressed with his chest compressions.

Speaking of stuffed toys, you might notice that Baby Yoda Squishmallow in the video needs a little first aid himself. We actually got him wayyy back at Christmas time during our Comfort and Joy online auction. He was a donation from Linda McFall-Bailey. It’s seriously impressive that he’s made it this long and continues to provide the charming Mr. B with continued joy and enrichment.

National Sibling Day Arrives Early!

February 9, 2023 by Anna

Last year for National Sibling Day, Chad wrote an excellent blog detailing the siblings and their shared familial roots at the sanctuary.  We recently received some information that has added one exciting update to this list…

A little hint before the big reveal… We have seen and noted the resemblance in these two individuals in the past but we didn’t have the records to back up any of our casual observances…

Any guesses yet? Answers below…

TERRY AND MAVE are half siblings! They share a father (Conrad).

The Dreamy Mezzanine

February 2, 2023 by Anna

In the winter, the Mezzanine is the coziest place to hang out with the chimpanzees. The upstairs Mezzanine is the only part of the sanctuary where humans can easily access the second floor for interactions with the chimps and it’s toasty warm up there. If you are missing a caregiver in the afternoon after the cleaning is done, there’s a good chance they are sitting upstairs on the heated floors next to one of their good friends.

Terry grooms Grace with a toothbrush:

This afternoon as I hunted for blog content, I found the majority of Cy’s group lounging in the Mezzanine. Here are 2 particularly dreamy looking people…
