Grooming Party
Since you are reading this, you likely know that grooming is an important activity within a chimpanzee group, whether that group is in the wild or in captivity. Because us humans are a part of their social network, we take part in grooming with them, both as the groomer and the groomie (is groomie an actual word? grooming receiver is perhaps the more technical phrase).
Grooming, like many social behaviors, can be somewhat contagious, in that if you see some friends grooming, you might join in or you might find someone else to groom with you.
The Dreamy Mezzanine
In the winter, the Mezzanine is the coziest place to hang out with the chimpanzees. The upstairs Mezzanine is the only part of the sanctuary where humans can easily access the second floor for interactions with the chimps and it’s toasty warm up there. If you are missing a caregiver in the afternoon after the cleaning is done, there’s a good chance they are sitting upstairs on the heated floors next to one of their good friends.

Recess with Gordo!
Yesterday, as the big group of 9 settled in for their usual after-breakfast naps, Gordo had other ideas! The view from the interior of the Mezzanine provides an interesting glimpse into the upstairs activities in the Lupine Playroom.
