First Impressions: Negra

August 29, 2015 by Anna

We had a slight sprinkle of rain and a breeze as we put out the forage on Young’s Hill this afternoon. This seemed like appropriate weather for Negra to venture out and collect some tomato slices.

She quickly returned to the greenhouse where she enjoyed her bounty under an orange fleece blanket. This photo and the weather remind me that fall is just around the corner.

Negra reminds me of comfort. She has favorite foods, sleeping spots, and outdoor temperatures. An early morning ritual that caregivers enjoy with Negra is the wrist kiss and grass request. When temperatures are warm, we will usually find her sleeping under a blanket on the top platform in the greenhouse. She will usually greet us with a gentle kiss on the wrist (her prehensile lips extend outside the caging) and then immediately clap her hands. I learned early on that this was an appeal for a couple fresh sprigs of grass that are growing just beyond the chimpanzee’s reach. “Queen” Negra will munch on the grass and go back to bed where she waits in her nest for us to present her with an offering of peanuts. We have hopes that she will accept the offering and shift into the building so we can close off the greenhouse for cleaning. Negra knows what she likes and she sticks to it.

First Impressions: Burrito

August 25, 2015 by Anna

This afternoon I went in to shoot some photos of Burrito in the greenhouse. Instead of relaxing on a platform while I snapped a few photos, he immediately sauntered up to the caging (with a blue cup in his mouth) and initiated a game of tug with a plastic tube.

This presented a challenge in photography as it can be difficult to decently capture up-close images of a wily chimpanzee. I did my best though. My first impression of Burrito? Charming!

On a side note, this is a photo of Jody wearing a rainbow sock. Enjoy!

First Impressions: Jody

August 11, 2015 by Anna

Last week I had every intention of doing a blog about Jody, but Jamie stole the show. Jody can be a tough chimpanzee to get to know. She will put up boundaries between her caregivers (especially new ones) that are easy to respect. She has the admiration of her chimpanzee family and is high ranking (although not as high as Jamie). Jody is a lover of large nests and will sometimes leave them in the doorways of the enclosures making it a challenge to close off. If you ask her nicely, she may oblige and move her blankets. On other days, she may stay posted in an area so there is no chance to clean it. Jody is also an amazing forager. She will go out on Young’s Hill and fill her mouth and hands so full of produce that her wrists bend into a shovel shape and her impressive lips are extended to capacity. She finds delicious things to eat on the hill, even when we haven’t specifically put out a forage. Whether it be bamboo branches, weeds, or grass, she will find it and enjoy it.

Today I took some photos of Jody as she lounged in the playroom. She had the beginnings of a nest built and a bamboo shoot ready to be snacked on. She also had a green-haired troll in her pelvic (hip) pocket.

Burrito was on standby as I photographed Jody. Keeping a watchful eye on her and making sure I didn’t step out of line.

First Impressions: Jamie

August 7, 2015 by Anna

Today was a challenging day for me to decide who I was going to write about. At first I was convinced that I was going to write about Jody and her impressive foraging techniques.
web_jody_forage_yh_aw_IMG_3373

But as I took more photos of Jody enjoying her corn, Jamie interrupted me and put a stop to the close-ups. Being the boss, she has very persuasive powers, so not only does she cancel the blog post about Jody, she also gets this post to be about her.

Jamie is unlike anyone I’ve ever met. She is dominant and intelligent, while still being endearing. This past week I have tried to go on several walks with her. She has gestured emphatically as I’ve tried on cowboy boot after cowboy boot. I’ve tried on matching boots and mismatched boots, tiny boots and gigantic boots. None of which seem to get her to start our hike. Only with the help of Elizabeth or Katelyn (wearing boots), has it been acceptable for us to walk together. Today it was JB’s turn to try on multitudes of boots. In hopes of enticing her outside, I tried on a separate pair of boots as well. Jamie found this suitable, and the 3 of us took a walk around the hill as Jamie foraged along the way. The more, the merrier!

First Impressions: Missy

August 5, 2015 by Anna

My training as a new staff caregiver at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest has many dimensions. It consists of learning many safety and cleaning protocols, as well as becoming familiar with the daily routine. When I am not doing safety checks, cleaning enclosures, or practicing moving doors, I get a chance to learn more about the chimpanzees’ personalities. This post will be the first of 7, as I share my first impressions of each chimpanzee as an individual.

Today’s post is about Missy. One of the very first things I learned about Missy is what a good friend to the other chimpanzees she is. She is always ready and willing to support her companions in whatever cause they deem worthy of their attention. Sometimes Jamie chooses that she does not want Young’s Hill to be closed in the evening. Missy is often ready to endorse Jamie’s decision. She will take shifts with the boss to stand guard at the hydraulic door so that it cannot be moved. Caregivers must wait patiently until Jamie calls off her commands and decides to build her nest for the evening.

I truly admire Missy’s independent and supportive qualities.

Testing Testing…123

July 30, 2015 by Anna

Hello to all the CSNW blog readers! My name is Anna Wallace and I’m the newest staff caregiver to join the team. I’m really excited to be going through training here and getting to know more about the Cle Elum 7! Today, as you may already know, is my first blog post. Not only is it my first blog post, but it is also my first time taking photos of these very photogenic beings. I thought I would share with you my favorites from the series of pictures I took this afternoon under Elizabeth’s watchful guidance.

I hope to share many more photos and a more detailed account of my training in the weeks to come!
