A Good Day

February 5, 2021 by J.B.

Not to brag, but according to Negra I’m a pretty good tap dancer. And can you believe I’ve never had a single lesson? If I try to stop, she claps and stomps and demands encore after encore. It’s exhausting but who am I to withhold such a gift?

Jamie is a person of many moods. Most are some variation of anxious, bossy, stubborn, controlling, or the like. But sometimes you walk into the chimp house in the morning and there’s just a lightness to her face. Like she was able to put her worries away for a little while. There are other indicators, as well. Like when she’s wearing a loosely-tied scarf with the bow at a jaunty angle – that’s a dead giveaway. Or when she’s made a nest on the playroom floor with all of her favorite things – boots, books, food puzzles, and so on. This morning, she ran up to the kitchen window with a boot in her pelvic pocket and greeted me with a long series of pant grunts and low moans. This is rare. As I said to Anna and Kelsi, either something was terribly wrong or Jamie was in a fantastic mood. Thankfully, it was the latter.

Her care-free mood continued through breakfast, as Kelsi prepared her morning medication (Jamie is on oral contraceptives to reduce discomfort caused by her swelling).

I can’t believe it’s February. To be clear, I do not cheer for climate change, or for any of the odd weather patterns that are made more likely by the warming of our planet. But it’s hard for all of us running a chimp sanctuary in Washington to not pause and enjoy the mild winter we’re having now. Annie felt the same way this morning and took her breakfast outside.

The Californians continue their war on shifting. Willy B was excited to meet Kelsi and Mave upstairs for breakfast but Honey B wanted none of it. But then Anna had a great idea – With Willy B and Mave upstairs, what if we gave Honey B access to the courtyard by herself? We have tried similar things before, thinking that perhaps Willy B’s intimidating presence prevents the girls from going outside. But this time, we were also going to load the courtyard with Honey B’s favorite foods – chow, gum, lettuce, smoothie, a fruit cup, and green onions. It was a foolproof plan!

Alas, it was not enough to lure Honey B outside this time. But when he was finally given access later in the morning, Willy B was very appreciative of our efforts.

Walks with Jamie are very predictable. She has worn a well-defined path around the perimeter of Young’s Hill over the last ten years with nary a misplaced step. Missy, on the other hand, is all over the place. One minute she’s right behind us, the next minute she’s gone.

You lose her in the brush somewhere, and then she pops up just long enough to let you know that she’s running off again.

This afternoon, Jamie signaled that she’s like to go for a walk but then she grabbed her boot book. I was confused..did she want to take a walk or look at the book?

Both.

Upon returning to the greenhouse, Jamie purposefully grabbed a toy watering can. She was up to something. I followed her inside and found her at the fountain.

Staff training

February 4, 2021 by Anna

Today (like last Tuesday), the staff are Zoom training to sharpen our skills in positive reinforcement training (PRT) so blogging will be quick! In the meantime, take a look back at some of the posts we’ve done in the past about our ongoing training program.

Our first blog post about our program comes all the way back from May of 2015.

Next comes a post just a short time later from former staff caregiver Debbie about Negra’s PRT progress

And here’s an August 2015 update  a November 2015 update and a November 2016 update

And another Negra update from October 2017

Here’s Jamie in January of 2018

Here you can see Negra’s progress from September of 2018

We’ve also been working with the Californians

Most recently, the concern of COVID-19 has made taking temperatures a  priority.

Stay tuned as we get to share more progress with you in the coming months!

In memory of Bill Walters

February 4, 2021 by Katelyn

The chimpanzees are incredibly fortunate to have so many wonderful friends. Nicki Walters, sponsored a special day of sanctuary today in memory of her husband, Bill Walters, on his birthday.

“It all started with Bill’s Birthday and led to the Twister. I must keep the tradition going and bring a day of fun to the Chimps for Bill’s Birthday. It is the best way to keep him in our hearts by knowing extra joy will be felt in his memory. Reading the funny antics about the Chimpanzee’s got us, and continue to get me through some dark days. Thank you for providing such loving care to these beautiful creatures and being so generous in sharing them with your amazing daily posts.”

In a year, plus, of so many ups and downs and twists and turns in the world, our hearts couldn’t have been more lifted to see this.

Bill, aka “Twister”, and the structure Twister, both continue to bring adventure and lift hearts, spirits and courage every day here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, and we suspect, in so many other hearts as well. Thank you so much, Nicki, for continuing to allow us the opportunity to celebrate Bill and his legacy with you, and for helping the chimpanzees’ hearts and spirits grow bigger and freer with each passing day.

A Blossoming Friendship

February 3, 2021 by Kelsi

Since Burrito’s life-threatening situations, most particularly the rattlesnake incident, Jamie seems to be more tolerant of Burrito. It wasn’t that they weren’t friends before, they would play or groom from time to time. But something in their friendship has shifted. For example, Jamie often wants to go on walks alone with her caregivers; she will even hideout in the culvert to ditch everyone. Recently though, she doesn’t mind when Burrito joins, she doesn’t even try to ditch him! We find them going on adventures, like climbing the twister. They even share a barrel while eating! He is kind of her shadow sometimes. Could it be that Burrito is less reactive overall, maybe? Could it be the near death experience, possibly? Or it could be a little column A and a little column B, we will never know for certain. But, what I do know is that watching them share a barrel while eating a meal brings me more joy than words can express.

I mean look how close they are!

Burrito wearing a blanket around his neck. It looks like a sweat towel, which makes perfect sense for him because he is always working up a sweat. Wait, no, his caregivers are the ones sweating.

Bonus Mave photo! Personally, I love a good photo of chimps hands or feet clasped together.

Pardon the Interruption

February 2, 2021 by Chad de Bree

Today, staff will be under going training this afternoon. We are hoping to analyze and enhance our positive reinforcement training program since we are always trying to find ways to better ourselves as caregivers to provide the best care we can for the chimpanzees and cattle. Positive reinforcement training (PRT) is a cooperative health monitoring program which the chimpanzees present different body parts for caregivers to inspect and track. More recently, PRT has helped us with daily temperature checks with all the residents during times of a pandemic. With training scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the next few weeks, it may be difficult for us to develop a blog, though we will try within the best of our abilities!

For today though, please enjoy these photos from Sunday of the grooming party Mave, Honey B, and Willy B had!

And a bonus photo of Jody during breakfast this morning.

The neighbors

February 1, 2021 by Katelyn

Don’t let this guy’s relaxed demeanor in this photo fool you. He’s been a wild man aalll daayyy long! Willy B took a brief respite to regain his energy in this moment (and of course, do a quick check in on his “stories”), but he has been very focused on the goings on of his seven neighbors and riling things up nearly from “can’t see to can’t see”. Displaying with kicks to the doors, hooting, hollering, screaming and banging and refusing to leave anywhere he might catch a glimpse of, or a response from, them. In short, Willy B has had a whole lot to say to the seven and naturally, they’ve had a lot to say in response. He even declined breakfast because he was so busy (don’t worry, he had an extra big lunch).

As it grew darker outside, Willy B finally called it a day and decided to allow us to close the chute for the night when he saw me cracking fresh coconuts for the seven in the play room after dinner. And he was standing indoors at the ready when we brought some in to offer he, Mave and Honey B for their evening enrichment. Needless to say, I am quite sure he’s going to sleep well!

Meanwhile, our other wild man, Burrito, kept caregiver, Anthony, busy galloping back and forth across the top of Young’s Hill. I stood out there a long time trying to capture photos of the chimpanzees as they raced and climbed and explored every which way around the hill, and the entire time these two were blurs back and forth in my periphery.

It was an overcast, mild (for winter) kinda day with occasional rain – the kind of weather these chimpanzees love – and I think everyone was excited to have a relatively snow-free Young’s Hill to race around on as they all spent a considerable amount of time outside. Even Negra!

Foxie and Orange Blossom making their way back from their adventure:

Missy taking one last look around the hill as she waited for her best friend, Annie, to catch up (but she decided to race off across the hill one more time before coming inside):

Here’s Miss Honey B picking through her nightbag treat covered toes and enjoying her peanut butter magazine after dinner. (As a side note, Mave made her night nest by weaving in the leftover peanut butter magazines and is currently curled up in the middle of them which is pretty sweet. Mave is very much a no photos after bedtime, shut the lights off, and don’t let the door hit you in the tookus on your way out kinda gal, so you will have to use your imaginations. 🙂 )

But back to Honey B:
