Ice Queen of the North

February 15, 2021 by Katelyn

Apologies for the blog delay, everyone! With another winter bluster in a string of many hitting later than expected today, roads closing, and plows seemingly busy elsewhere, once the chimpanzees were settled in safe, cozy and content for the night, Chad and I made the non-executive decision to scurry on down the driveway immediately at the end of our shift this evening. The humans are home safe and sound and the chimpanzees are all snoozing in their nests (I just checked in on our cameras), so I’m writing this from home.

We received a little additional snow overnight! This is heading up Young’s Hill to do the perimeter check this morning. The angle makes it appear a little more dramatic than it was, but it was still plenty deep:

Once I got around to the other side (chimp house below) I was thrilled to see the sunrise poking through – there is nothing like snow-covered land lit up by bluebird skies and sunshine:

And even better is how much the chimpanzees spirits seem to soar in all that light. Sweet Annie enjoying the sunrise and grabbing some snow from the raceway which leads to Young’s Hill from their greenhouse:

Beautiful Jody, enjoying her oranges from breakfast:

These magical icicles were ripe for harvesting so we decided to make ice castle snow snacks for the chimps!

They are sprinkled with frozen raspberries and drizzled with left over Gatorade from the chimpanzees’ Valentine’s Day party yesterday.  Hhmmm…Now that I look at them from this angle, they could possibly appear a little macabre…but trust me, they were truly things of beauty! Although, this could also be part of why Jamie was hooting her head off with excitement. (If you’re new to the blog, you may not yet have seen that Jamie is known for (among other things) her fascination with books about things like skeletons and mummies). Really though, it was about the ice castle toppings. 🙂

As you might imagine, Jamie proclaimed herself Ice Queen of the North and surrounded herself with all the ice castles. Every time the other chimps would tentatively pass by as they foraged, testing out their chances of being able to join her, she would reach out and pull the treats closer. But not to worry, there were mini-castles upstairs and lots of cabbage, so everyone got to partake. And these were being snacked on by everyone all day long!:

Missy, being excellent at chimpanzee politics and often serving as Jamie’s right-hand woman, was allowed to grab a snack to go:

Willy B, Honey B and Mave are still moderately offended by such things as offers of snow treats, but they enjoyed some other treats, spent a lot of time supervising J.B. working in the new expansion, playing chase with their caregivers, and enjoyed a lot of lounging and grooming with one another. All perfect snowy day (er, week) activities.

Willy B (yes, after a long game of chase, he’s watching his stories!):

Whatever life is throwing your way right now, and I understand it could be so much, may you find the beauty around you, no matter how small. Sometimes, when the world around you feels overwhelming, it’s just there, in that brief stilling, deep breath and smallest of details, where magic and enchantment live. All we have to do is notice it. I wish you that. Goodnight, all!

Will You (Honey) B My Valentine?

February 14, 2021 by Anthony

The chimps had an absolute banger of Valentine’s Day party.

There’s a lot to be said about this strange holiday that I won’t say here (although I encourage you to read about the event’s namesake). To us caregivers, however, Valentine’s Day is yet another great excuse to give special treats to the chimpanzees.

My morning began with a safety patrol around Young’s Hill, the chimps’ outdoor enclosure, although the fresh snow made the short walk into an adventure. The valley was veiled in gray clouds that quelled any hope of a visible sunrise. It was surreal to see the climbing structures buried in snowdrifts. Far below, I could see J.B. plowing the sanctuary’s driveway yet again.

Back in the Chimp House, everyone else got right to work. While Katelyn shoveled off the sidewalks and stairs around the building, Chad got right to work in the kitchen. As the Enrichment Coordinator, Chad’s the de facto Party Planner, and he had a big spread in mind for Valentine’s Day brunch. The meal consisted of red-colored foods (diluted Gatorade, sliced blood oranges, whole strawberries) and some special heart-shaped banana pancakes made by Patti, one of our amazing volunteers.

When the chimps saw these platters from their vantage in the Playroom, they lost their minds in an excited frenzy. They were all overwhelmed (in a good way). Foxie was the craziest, stomping around and grimacing, until Jody reassured her by gently touching her backside.

As we prepared the Greenhouse for the celebration, the chimpanzees milled around the Playroom, peeking through the windows as they passed by each like some sort of primate carousel.

Once we humans were safely out of the Greenhouse, I opened up the doors so the chimps could feast. They immediately diffused around the enclosure, floor to ceiling and wall to wall, foraging for all their favorite bits of the brunch platters. It was difficult for Chad and I to take photos because they were so busy (and the layer of snow on top of the Greenhouse prevented sunlight from getting in).

On the other side of the building, the chimpanzees weren’t as excited about brunch (which is surprising because they’re Millennials). Honey B and Mave were actually content to stay downstairs all day, so that’s where we ended up serving their meals. They seemed to be feeling well, but the chimps always have a choice to stay where they are (thus declining our generous offer to clean their enclosures). Eventually, they all got to try Patti’s banana pancakes (which the loved) and then settled down for some grooming, napping, and play with caregivers.

Mave relaxed and groomed her friends while Willy B watched Shrek (three times in a row) and frequently checked in on the neighbors. Honey B spent most of the time following caregivers around, playing chase and grooming snow off their boots through the caging. She was always at the window or caging whenever I walked by, so we continued the tradition of playing tag between the windows of the new Playrooms. If paying attention is the only requirement for someone to be called a “Valentine,” then I think Honey B has earned that right today.

Of course, while Honey B may be my “Valentine” today, our supporters made it clear that all the chimps are loved. Diana shared a video yesterday to celebrate this special occasion with the sanctuary’s family, We even had TWO sponsors for this day of sanctuary, the second of whom is particular enamored with this handsome gentleman.

Valentine’s Thank You Video

February 13, 2021 by Diana

Enjoy your day tomorrow!

As the video above expresses, everyone here is incredibly grateful and honored that you choose to spend your time on this blog and thinking about the chimpanzees and bovines at the sanctuary.

I received an unexpected call today about a Valentine’s Day gift that I will be sharing tomorrow to e-news subscribers!

In the meantime, the news from the day is that Burrito has a new favorite toy. Another gift from Trees for Tigers! Below are a couple of photos and I posted a short video clip on our Instagram account.

Scooter Chase

February 12, 2021 by J.B.

Why run when you can scoot? All three of the Californians were keeping their caregivers busy after lunch today with games of chase, but only Honey B managed to play without ever getting off her butt.

This week, construction began on the first of two climbing structures in the new playrooms. These “trees” – made possible with funding from Trees for Tigers – will have nesting platforms, branches, and dozens of fire hose vines attached. Combined with the “monkey bar” ceiling, it will make all of the open space in the middle of the playrooms usable for the chimps. We’ll share more next week as they progress.

Pear-adise

February 11, 2021 by Anna

As the snow falls outside, the staff are continuing our PRT Zoom training from our respective office spaces and the chimpanzees are snuggled into their nests. Please enjoy these photos of Negra and her breakfast pears as my submission for “quick blog of the day.”
