Another day, another adventure on the hill

December 5, 2014 by J.B.

It sounds strange to say, but I love it when the chimps are alarmed by something on Young’s Hill. I think they do too, in a way.

This afternoon, I went outside to see what the chimps were up to and I noticed that everyone but Negra was on the hill. Normally that wouldn’t be all that unusual, but it is very cold today and the chimps usually prefer to nap inside after lunch. Missy was pilo erect (her hair was standing on end indicating fear or excitement), and she was walking briskly back down from the top of the hill.

My guess is that Hank the Hawk was in the area. Sometimes you can’t see him but you can hear his screech echoing through the valley. I can imagine how that might put a chimpanzee on edge.

Jody was trying to keep up with Missy as she zipped back and forth across the hill.

Annie just sat there, staring into the distance.

Foxie didn’t seem to know what was going on, but she and Dora came out for backup just in case.

Burrito sat on a log just outside the greenhouse, watching all the other chimps.

web_Burrito_close_up_sit_on_log_YH_jb_IMG_6778

After a few minutes, he retreated to the doorway, either to warm up or to keep a safe distance from whatever may have been lurking outside.

Jamie looked at me and gestured toward the building, which was her way of insisting that we grab some boots and set out on a patrol. As we headed back out, Missy took the lead.

web_Jamie_look_back_patrol_YH_jb_IMG_6851

When there’s trouble afoot, Missy likes to head to the top of the hill and stand bipedally to survey her enclosure and the rest of the valley.

I didn’t see or hear anything unusual on our patrol, and the chimps eventually seemed satisfied that everything was OK.

For now.

Debbie caught Foxie and Diana in a game of tug of war. Watch for Foxie’s special move at the end.

Glitter baby!

December 3, 2014 by Katelyn

Thanks to all of our amazing supporters, Foxie is the lucky recipient of many troll and Dora the Explorer dolls. Without fail, each new “baby” makes her day (and subsequently the humans’ day as well). She recently received this wee glitter troll and as one might imagine, she was particularly enamored with this flashy little guy:

Shortly after receiving her new friend, I found Foxie in the greenhouse full of joy and laughing all by herself (well, not by herself, she did have the troll tucked in her hip pocket):

Look at this huge play face!

web_foxie_upside_down_laugh_gh_kd_IMG_5326

And the piece de resistance…notice glitter troll on top of Foxie’s upside-down bum!!

Good times, in classic Foxie-style.

Pedicures, chimpanzee-style

December 2, 2014 by Katelyn

It was 10 degrees when we arrived at the sanctuary this morning and much of Young’s Hill was covered in frost. Our days have been stunningly bright and cold. The contrast of walking into the very warm chimp house to find the chimpanzees safe, comfortable and enjoying the sun from their nests makes this time of year all the more enchanting.

As you are probably aware by now if you follow the blog, Jamie is not a fair weather chimpanzee. She manages to make the most of each day regardless of the season and this usually means several walks around her beloved Young’s Hill. As we headed up the hill today we were greeted by a doe and her fawn:

Despite the cold temperatures, Jamie quickly made the decision to take a minute to chase off the intruders before resuming our walk:

web_doe_fawn_see_jamie_kd_IMG_5490

After three laps Jamie decided the perimeter had been successfully secured and was ready for a break to warm up. As you might imagine, all the walking around Young’s Hill that Jamie does can be tough on a girls feet. If you’ve ever wondered how the chimpanzees’ care for their nails, Jamie decided to give herself a pedicure this afternoon and shows us how it’s done:

web_jamie_hold_foot_nest_pr_kd_IMG_6717

The fact that Jamie can spend her days walking around Young’s Hill, defending her home against “marauding” deer/eagles/hawks, and then return to the chimp house when she chooses and relax in a cozy nest and groom herself is a big part of what sanctuary means for her. As you might imagine, it means something different to each of the chimpanzees’ just as our own freedoms and choices do to us. Every single minute of their day, every choice they make, every comfort they enjoy, is a gift made possible by you. And we couldn’t be more thankful.

Today, Giving Tuesday, is a wonderful opportunity to help non-profits out through your generosity and compassion. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please check out the #GivingTuesday video that Diana sent out earlier today to see more of what your support means to the chimpanzees and how you can help ensure that every day is a day of sanctuary for them.

Video and Image to Share for #GivingTuesday

December 2, 2014 by Diana

If you read this blog, you hopefully also get our e-newsletter, so this video may have landed in your inbox early this morning.

#GivingTuesday is the big kick-off to holiday giving for nonprofits, so we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss out! Please share the video now with your friends via email, Facebook, Twitter, etc!

We’re hoping to get closer to our 50 new sponsor-a-days for 2015 today, so please consider sponsoring a day for yourself or a loved one. It’s a great two-for-one gift: a gift for the chimpanzees and a gift for your honored special someone. What could be sweeter?

Your donation today, whether a sponsor-a-day donation, a chimpanzee pal donation, or a general donation, will receive a special thank you bonus as part of your email confirmation.

Thank you for remembering Annie, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy, and Negra in your holiday giving!

Enrichment in Boxes Day

December 1, 2014 by Keri

Each day at the sanctuary has a daytime and an evening enrichment theme. Having these themes helps volunteers and staff select various objects to offer the chimpanzees. It’s not that the chimps know what each theme is, like “Red Day” or “Giant Pile Day” or “Things in Bags Day;” it is more that the themes help staff and volunteers make sure to mix up the enrichment that is offered each day (and night) and the ways in which it is offered.

One of the recent themes was “Enrichment in Boxes Day,” which entailed volunteers putting various items like troll and dora dolls, socks, scarves, straws, bandanas, wooden toys, etc. into boxes. We put the boxes with all of those items in them into each of the enclosures after we finished cleaning yesterday.

We caught Foxie checking out one of the boxes in the Playroom. Can you guess what she was after?

Watching Foxie stick her hand into the box of “unknown” is something that really struck me. Elizabeth literally said “She never would have done that six years ago.” She was right. Without knowing Foxie’s early years at the sanctuary, one might think that she has always loved troll and dora dolls. But, that has not always been the case. When she first arrived, she did not want anything to do with the enrichment or blankets that were offered each day. She actually went out of her way to avoid all of it.

Throughout the past six plus years, Foxie has grown by leaps and bounds. She has gained confidence to explore Young’s Hill (and even joins Jamie on her patrol sometimes), she continues to try new things, and as Katelyn wrote in a recent post, she has grown to trust humans with her “babies.” Who would have imagined that one piece of enrichment would have such a dramatic effect on the transformation of Foxie chimpanzee?
