Cinco de Mayo
Volunteer caregiver Stephanie throws the best parties for the chimpanzees, and today was no different. She showed up for her volunteer shift this morning with her arms full of pinatas (nine of them!), plastic margarita glasses, and lots of fresh produce for a Cinco de Mayo party. We filled the margarita glasses with fruit smoothie and set them around the greenhouse. We decorated Young’s Hill with the pinatas (each filled with a few nuts and berries) and scattered a fruit salad forage.
We brought our cameras to the Out of the Box auction last night, and they didn’t make it back to the chimp house in time for the party, so we snapped a few photos with Debbie’s phone.

We weren’t able to get many good photos of the chimps on Young’s Hill since we didn’t have our telephoto lens, but I love that these two photos, taken just after we opened the door to the hill, show all seven chimpanzees.
Thanks again to Steph for bringing the party to CSNW today!
Video Shown at Out of the Box Last Night
Thank you to everyone who raised their paddles at the event last night towards the Veterinary Clinic!
Out of the Box 2013 in Seattle was so much fun! And you can keep the fun going by bidding on online auction items and making donations towards the Veterinary Fund. The online auction runs through May 6th at 6pm (PST).
Almost Time to Bid!
Here’s just a little sneak peak at Out of the Box 2013 in Seattle:
And below is a message that just went out to e-news subscribers. We’re so excited about the auction!
On Your Mark, Get Set, Bid!Today is the day! Over 200 guests will be arriving at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s Seattle gala auction at 6pm (PST), and the Out of the Box online opens at the exact same time! Just think, as Seattle guests are perusing auction items and placing bids, you can do the same thing on your computer! You can even donate toward the Veterinary Clinic at the same time paddles are being raised in Seattle. To connect those at a distance even more with our Seattle event, we’ll send you the link to the video that guests at Bell Harbor will be watching, as they are watching it, at 9:00pm PST. We’ll be watching the online auction and can update the auctioneer in real-time with online donations being made. I hope you’ll join the fun, and raise your virtual paddles high! You can also follow the Seattle Out of the Box auction through photos and posts on Facebook throughout the evening. Consider celebrating Audrey Hepburn’s birthday today, and place your first bid on this painting of Audrey by Spazy Art. The artist donated the piece after finding out about the auction through the pre-auction Green Day tickets. Don’t forget, the online auction also features a guitar signed by Green Day members: Those are just two of the amazing auction items available for online bidding. There’s something for everyone – from art, to gift certificates, to exotic getaways. We JUST added a new amazing getaway to an ecolodge in Ecuador! Bidding on all online items ends Monday, May 6th at 6:00pm. Out of the Box 2013 was made possible by auction committee members Pam Lehnert, Felicity Wood, Connie Robertson, Julie Harding, Patti Sims, and Annie Norris, as well as many, many event volunteers. Big thanks to celebrity host Charlotte Ross: You can bid on a visit to Paramount Studios with Charlotte! Out of the Box sponsors:

Happy Birthday, Talia!
William Wright sponsored today for Talia Silveri’s birthday. William says:
“Talia loves all the chimps at CSNW and wants to share her birthday love with her favorite animal friends!”
Happy birthday, Talia! We hope your day is full of surprises.
Annie loves grass!
Elizabeth, volunteer Keri, and myself were sitting in the greenhouse after lunch, hanging out with the chimps during the lazy part of the afternoon. I was trying to think of a good blog post, when Annie walked in with this huge mouthful of grass. Perfect! Here you go:
Lazy Burrito
Mornings in the chimp house are a flurry of activity. Staff and volunteers clean the chimpanzee enclosures from about 9:00 when we arrive until lunchtime at 1:00. It’s usually not until after the chimpanzees are served lunch that we have a moment to sit down. Except for the coldest part of winter, the chimps typically spend the afternoon between lunch and dinner engaged in some quiet activity in the warm greenhouse (grooming and napping are favorites). This time in the greenhouse is usually so warm and slow and lazy that I often find my eyes getting heavy if I stay too long in there.
I popped my head in after lunch yesterday and Burrito was sitting in a windowsill with a couple of plastic fish toys. I could tell he was feeling low-key because he didn’t jump up into his usual game of chase when he saw me – he merely nodded his head a little and bit on the fishes. (He often bites on something when he’s feeling playful.)
I did get a playface out of him.
After a few minutes he moved over to the deck to get a little more comfortable.
He summoned up just enough energy for a brief game of peekaboo…
…before passing out.
