Chimpanzee Photography Experience & Online Auction Opening Soon

August 26, 2014 by Diana

I mentioned the other day that some 2013 HOOT! auction bidders had cashed in their photography experience at the sanctuary that they won at the gala.

Right now, we are gearing up for our Summer Biddin’ online auction. While we don’t have a photography session, we do have a really amazing and unique experience to bid on: a Backstage Pass to the Sanctuary!

Bidding for all items opens Thursday morning, and items are still being added, but you can and should (right now) check out how you can help us throw a spectacular Summer Lovin’ Party for the chimpanzees and get some perks for yourself in the process.

Back to Saturday. Martha and Susie were the first winning bidders for the photography session. They had a great time at the sanctuary learning some new photography skills from photographers Karen Ducey and Dean Rutz. They set up photography camp on the observation deck and learned the ropes of the professional equipment that Karen and Dean generously loaned.

And they got some really amazing photos!! Below are just a few.

Annie:

And birthday-girl Missy, looking like her athletic self:

Not only was it Missy’s birthday on the day they visited, it was also Martha’s! Karen was kind enough to bring a birthday cake, which of course we adorned with some CSNW style:

Martha and Susie also took a walk with J.B. around the hill with Jamie of course following on the inside of the fence. Ellie the elk was hanging around the property and joined them too:

You just never know what adventures await at the sanctuary, especially on a party day, which is why you should get ready to bid on the unique Backstage Pass experience and help us throw a great end-of-summer party! You don’t have to wait until Thursday to make your Summer Lovin’ party donation – do it today!

Two of a Kind

February 28, 2014 by Diana

Below are a couple of photos – one of Annie and one of Missy that I took a month or so apart a while back.  How does that saying go – birds of a feather, flock together? I just love that they are in such similar poses, but on opposite sides of the ladder.

Before we get to the photos, though – we have some celebrating to do!

REASON TO CELEBRATE #1: Your donations, your generosity, your love got us to $12,590 in our Share the Chimp Love fundraising. THANK YOU to every single person who donated and set up fundraising pages. Check out the Share the Chimp Love page to see who barely came in ahead in the 2014 Interim Co-Director fundraising competition (in truth, I may have been the only co-director who was really in competition). $2,590 over our goal is certainly something to celebrate!

REASON TO CELEBRATE #2: Grapes for Apes, our wine tasting in Kirkland at Northwest Cellars tomorrow, sold out! Even if you can’t attend, you can buy both red and white wine with the beautiful Jody label that Lori Kiers designed. Learn how on the Grapes for Apes event page.

Here’s the label:

I’m really looking forward to seeing the Grapes for Apes crowd and also kicking off ticket sales for Hoot!, our May 3rd Seattle gala. Check this page tomorrow to buy your Hoot! tickets or get them in person at Grapes for Apes. We decided to have tables of ten at a reduced price this year for the gala, so you should definitely think about inviting nine people and getting a whole table.

REASON TO CELEBRATE #3: In just a few weeks we will be installing a back-up generator, thanks to NAVS and Karen and Don Young!

2014 is looking pretty good for the Cle Elum Seven.

Without further ado, here are BFFs Annie and Missy demonstrating “birds of a feather” :

First snow

November 16, 2013 by Diana

It’s been a pretty mild fall / beginning of winter, and we finally got our first snowfall at the sanctuary overnight. It was just a dusting, but Missy was VERY eager to get outside for a taste.

Jamie also went out quickly to get a snack.

Jamie's hands reaching for snow

Jamie with handfuls of snow

We were wondering if the colder weather might slow down Jamie’s desire to walk around the hill. The answer is no. So far four walks and counting. She did wait until the snow melted, though. Missy joined Jamie on one of her walks. She gave us a big head start then ran full-speed up the hill. You can see a photo on her Facebook page.

Speaking of Facebook, a few weeks ago we asked on our Facebook page how fans became interested in chimpanzees. The answers were really interesting. One person recalled the video of the chimpanzees at CSNW first experiencing a big snowstorm, which was shared on a couple of news stations.

The video, which is now almost five years old, is posted below. That was before we put the panels on the greenhouse, so really before they had a greenhouse, and long before they had the 2-acre Young’s Hill. The chimps are leaning out of front room #4 into what we called the outdoor area then. Listen to those happy food squeaks and watch the prehensile lips in action!

The Chimpanzees’ 12th Man Blue Friday Seahawks Party

November 15, 2013 by Diana

The Seattle Seahawks have had a great season so far, and we decided the chimpanzees should be part of the 12th Man Blue Friday activities! Seahawks and chimpanzee fan Melanie Kelsey helped us out by buying some decorations that volunteer Patti picked up. The decorations were a big hit with Burrito, as you’ll see in the video below.

Perhaps on game day this Sunday, when the Seahawks play the Minnesota Vikings, the chimps will let out their loudest pant-hoot to contribute to the loud and proud tradition of the 12th man. Go Hawks!

September 27, 2013 by Diana

Help the sanctuary tomorrow by going to Seattle’s South Lake Union Veggie Grill anytime between 11am and 5pm, mention the sanctuary and 50% of what you spend on food and beverages will go to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest! If you go between 11am and 1pm, you can meet Jennifer, CSNW’s Executive Director.

Help us spread the word to all of your friends in the Seattle area. Share our event page and invite your friends via Facebook.

Or consider making a lunch donation if you’re unable to attend. The chimps appreciate your support!

Board Member Profile: David Brotherton

July 31, 2013 by Diana

We have some largely unsung heroes that are a big part of Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest – our Board of Directors who volunteer countless hours overseeing the organization. We decided it’s about time we sung about them, so this is the first of a monthly series of blog posts about our amazing board members and how they became involved with the sanctuary.

We currently have ten board members and are looking to fill a few open seats. This post is about our outgoing Board President David Brotherton.

David Brotherton

David learned about the sanctuary through a long-standing board member, Bruce Wagman. David and Bruce share a love of live music and, though they live in different states, often attend shows together.

David first met the chimpanzees more than three years ago. His introduction to the group involved Jody spitting quite a bit of water on him. This baptism left him with the distinct impression that the chimps were not there to entertain, but were giving him the choice to either help out or get out. He chose to help.

David brings to the board a wealth of strategic communications experience as the founder and director of Brotherton Strategies, a Seattle-based consulting firm that works with a wide mix of grant making foundations and socially minded corporate clients. Before getting involved in public relations, marketing and brand strategy, he worked in Washington D.C. as a congressional speech writer and political reporter. Perhaps we should have him report on the politics of the Cle Elum Seven!

David has a passion for Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest and is eager to see the organization thrive long into the future with a firm strategic plan in place. He gushes about the amazing supporters of the sanctuary and describes the organization as unlike any other that he’s known or supported.

He recently served one term as the Board President and is now helping Kimber Leblicq transition into that role. His tenure as president spanned an important period in the sanctuary’s history. David helped guide us through the Taylor Bridge Fire (and not just in a governance role – he brought tortilla chips and beer to the staff and volunteers the day after the fire and allowed us a few moments of relaxation and laughter). He then oversaw the search to hire our no-longer-new Executive Director Jennifer Whitaker.

With the support of one of his clients, Provitro Biosciences (formerly known as Booshoot), David also introduced the chimps to the bamboo now flourishing on Young’s Hill, which the chimpanzees have been loving ever since. Now that I think about all he has done these past few years, I realize that I actually owe him a beer!

Feel free to leave a comment for David below this post.

Almost Time to Bid!

May 4, 2013 by Diana

Here’s just a little sneak peak at Out of the Box 2013 in Seattle:

stars of the show

And below is a message that just went out to e-news subscribers. We’re so excited about the auction!

On Your Mark, Get Set, Bid!

out of the box logToday is the day! Over 200 guests will be arriving at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s Seattle gala auction at 6pm (PST), and the Out of the Box online opens at the exact same time!

Just think, as Seattle guests are perusing auction items and placing bids, you can do the same thing on your computer!

You can even donate toward the Veterinary Clinic at the same time paddles are being raised in Seattle.

To connect those at a distance even more with our Seattle event, we’ll send you the link to the video that guests at Bell Harbor will be watching, as they are watching it, at 9:00pm PST. We’ll be watching the online auction and can update the auctioneer in real-time with online donations being made.

I hope you’ll join the fun, and raise your virtual paddles high!

You can also follow the Seattle Out of the Box auction through photos and posts on Facebook throughout the evening.

Consider celebrating Audrey Hepburn’s birthday today, and place your first bid on this painting of Audrey by Spazy Art.

audrey hepburn

The artist donated the piece after finding out about the auction through the pre-auction Green Day tickets. Don’t forget, the online auction also features a guitar signed by Green Day members:

Those are just two of the amazing auction items available for online bidding. There’s something for everyone – from art, to gift certificates, to exotic getaways. We JUST added a new amazing getaway to an ecolodge in Ecuador!

Bidding on all online items ends Monday, May 6th at 6:00pm.

Out of the Box 2013 was made possible by auction committee members Pam Lehnert, Felicity Wood, Connie Robertson, Julie Harding, Patti Sims, and Annie Norris, as well as many, many event volunteers.

Big thanks to celebrity host Charlotte Ross:
