For chimpanzees, true happiness is found most often in moments of anticipation. I love watching them play as they wait in expectation of a good meal or an exciting treat.

Quality Control
Jamie gets a special kind of pleasure from trying to destroy things that I have just repaired.
On Young’s Hill
For Jamie, patrolling Young’s Hill is serious business. Tell that to Jody, Foxie, Annie, and Missy, who all seem like they’re having a little too much fun.
Foxie the Chimpanzee and Poppy the Troll
Foxie’s love of troll dolls started over eight years ago when she arrived at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. She still loves the old school trolls, but now that there’s a new DreamWorks Animation film called Trolls, and you can bet that Foxie is going to benefit from the marketing.
Foxie likes the songs by Justin Timberlake that are in the trailers.
Her favorite doll so far seems to be Poppy, whose voice in the animated movie is Anna Kendrick. With this description of Poppy, they do sound like kindred spirits.
Balancing Act
I snapped a few photos of Foxie this morning as she strolled through Young’s Hill with Dora the Explorer on her back. In the wild, infants will cling to their mothers’ backs. Dora, on the other hand, is no help at all so it’s up to Foxie to keep her balanced up there.
As I was preparing to post these photos to Facebook, I noticed a few good ones that we had taken previously.
The Fountain of Youth
…is the friendship between these two chimpanzees. Both in their ’40s and showing no signs of slowing down.
A chimp family stroll
We are being gifted with a stretch of incredibly spring-like weather. The mornings start out damp, foggy and cold, but by the afternoon it’s warm, bright and sunny. The humans decided we needed a walk around Young’s Hill as much as Jamie did so we all decided to join her. The sight of a group of their caregivers always gets the chimps excited and often all or most of them will join us. This also gets our resident wild elk friend excited and she decided to tag along as well (though I am pretty sure the chimps attempted to un-invite her). You know, just a chimp family stroll in our own wonderful world at the sanctuary (missing Keri and Elizabeth who are home recovering from colds, and Negra and Foxie who were nesting in the sun).
We all hold so much gratitude in our hearts for this most special and magical of places and all who make it possible. A sanctuary to so many, non-human and human alike.
