An Unusual Play Trio

J.B. and I were cleaning the playroom this morning, when we saw Negra, Foxie and Annie playing together. This is quite the unusual trio of playmates, and I’ve never seen Negra play this long in one stretch! There was more than what is shown in the video, but it was challenging filming conditions – through the glass window with the playroom filling up with steam from cleaning. J.B. caught some choice moments, and I know Negra fans will be thrilled.

Planet Green for a Green Planet

Great news! We’ve found an easy way for our supporters to help us (and themselves) from afar!

CSNW has teamed up with a company called Planet Green, which is a company that recycles inkjet cartridges and old cell phones. For every inkjet cartridge and cell phone turned into them on our behalf, Planet Green sends us a donation (visit this link for a list of prices of what Planet Green gives us). I have a few volunteers from Seattle that have begun collecting for us. I sent in about 20 inkjet cartridges and 4 cell phones and we received a check for $37! (Considering it didn’t cost any of us a dime, not bad! Thanks so much guys!) Just think how much we could make if we all started collecting!? This program is not only good for us, you, our landfills, etc… but it’s also a great way to do your part on behalf of gorillas in Africa. Cell phones contain a mineral called coltan, which is a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa- home to lowland gorillas. Mass production of cell phones has resulted in mass destruction of the forests and is resulting in a loss of habitat for gorillas. By opening up the forest, this practice also paves the way for the slaughter of gorillas for the bushmeat trade. Recycling old cell phones is a great way to reduce the need for coltan and protect the gorillas and their home.

Seeing green(s)

Food is serious business to Burrito Chimpanzee and today he was seeing green. It’s been an unseasonably warm day today, so the greenhouse was a luxurious 60 degrees or so. We set up a huge lunch forage out there– I think Burrito was very happy with this decision.

The New Annie

Diana and Elizabeth have both noted on this blog that Annie seems to be getting more confident. She’s taking food in front of the more dominant chimps – sometimes from more the dominant chimps. And she has begun interacting with chimps other than Missy.

What really amazes me is her newest choice of playmates. In the past, Annie would occasionally attempt to join in on games that other chimps were playing, and it almost always ended badly. It’s like she didn’t know how to read the cues that playmates trade throughout a game. The other chimps would be playing a quiet game of tickle, and Annie would come running in with a slap to the head or a full-on tackle. Someone would get upset and a fight would break out, ending with Annie splayed on the ground in a full-blown, chimp style panic attack. This was especially true when she tried to play with Foxie.

That was the old Annie. The new Annie has realized that there is a world out there beyond Missy. And she seems to be figuring out how to get along with everyone else. Her newest playmate? Foxie. Go figure.
