King 5 link to broadcast

May 3, 2012 by Diana

Here’s the link to the King 5 story that just aired about Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest: http://ow.ly/aGS3M

Thanks Gary and Ken for making the trek out to Cle Elum and for sharing the GoPro footage! And thanks to GoPro camera donors who helped us purchase the camera earlier this year and the special group of volunteers who helped install the camera mounts on Young’s hill (more on that later).

Chimpanzees’ choice: enrichment or food?

April 21, 2012 by Diana

Today is GORGEOUS! So gorgeous that we set out a party on Young’s Hill complete with new gifts from special friends and fun food. It was an early celebration of Love a Chimpanzee Day (April 23rd), a holiday invented by supporter Monica Best and a day that she sponsors each year.

Jamie passed the food and went right for her new red boots brought by Monica’s friend Sophy. After securing her new red boots, Jamie did manage to get a huge armful of bok choy (not pictured).

Guess what Burrito chose? That’s right – food! Here he is eating cabbage by the treat rock:

Jody first went for the food (she’s eating watermelon in the photo below):

But later she grabbed some clown glasses and a new doll. The photo below is a little blurry because Jody was on the move!

There were three new Dora dolls on the hill, thanks to caregiver Jackie’s thrift store shopping. Foxie quickly gathered them all up:

And later spent some quality time with them:

All in all, it was a delightful early celebration of Love a Chimpanzee Day. Thank you, Monica! And thank you to all supporters who sponsor days and otherwise support the sanctuary.

Today was a special day for me too! Jim, Audrey and Brian worked on the outreach & events stuff shed. Isn’t it beautiful?? I want to move in.

Foxie’s expanding troll doll collection

April 14, 2012 by Diana

Foxie has received a lot of new troll dolls in the past few days. She’s also been even more playful than her baseline playfulness, which is off the charts. Coincidence?

She was sitting in the window ledge watching Connie and me set up the playroom after cleaning today, so I decided to set her troll dolls out so she could take a look before coming back in the room. Annie joined her for a moment and I saw Annie with one of the troll dolls in her nest tonight.

Please excuse all of the mooning in the photo below

Primates are Creative

March 7, 2012 by Diana

I’m declaring March “Art Month!”

If you received the March E-News sent out today, then you may have taken a peak at the art that could soon be yours through Biddin’ for the Seven.

We’ll be adding more art to the online auction site as the month rolls on, including art made by Jamie Chimpanzee.

Watching Jamie create and knowing how incredibly artistic many Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest supporters are inspired me to put together this auction.

You can see the pieces added so far on the Biddin’ for the Seven online auction site. Below are two featured pieces.

Chimp Ring by Tamela

Tamela is a multi-talented artist who has been following the chimpanzees since before their arrival to the sanctuary in 2008.  In addition to her contributions of several original art pieces for past fundraisers, she’s donated money to help us throw many fun and food-filled parties for the chimps and has donated items that the chimps still use everyday (like the big rubber maid tub that we sometimes fill with snow).

The ring is adjustable from a size seven to a size nine. It is 99.9% pure solid silver and the band is sterling silver. Tamela formed the chimp in fine silver clay, then kiln fired it and finished with a hand polish and a hard jeweler’s wax to protect the antique-like finish. What all of this detail boils down to is this: the ring is gorgeous andunique, and you need to bid on it. Register today on the auction site. Bidding for all items begins on March 24th.

Missy on a Mission by Margaret

Missy on a Mission by Margaret

Margaret H. Parkinson has a gift. She sees a photo that she’s drawn to and she brings it to life 100-fold with vibrant colors. The photo that Margaret’s 20″ x 16″ oil painting shown above was inspired by was posted on the blog on the third day the chimpanzees had access to Young’s Hill. See the photo and read the blog post – it will give even more meaning to the painting.

Margaret and her partner Karen visited the sanctuary before the chimpanzees arrived in 2008. In addition to donating several original paintings and prints, Margaret has been a generous financial supporter, volunteer, and writer for the sanctuary’s annual book (limited edition Year Three books are in print now and will also be available in the online auction).

The image of Missy on a Mission above is good, but the painting in person is breathtaking. Come see it displayed at the Sippin’ for the Seven event in Roslyn on March 24th and you’ll see what I mean.

Vertical Play

January 14, 2012 by Diana

I found some gems when going through videos today. The rungs in this room (what we call around here Front Room One) normally lead to a bench. The bench was taken out and will be replaced soon, but that doesn’t mean the rungs aren’t still used by acrobatic Foxie.

The treat rock

November 9, 2011 by Jackie

Today volunteer Laura and I put together a peanut butter/fruit puree and smeared it inside the tubes for the treat rock. The treat rock mimics a termite mound, in that the chimps can use sticks or hoses to fish for treats we place in tubes mounted inside the rock. Thus far, the chimps have been a bit too busy with other things to care about “fishing” for treats in the rock (the hill is a lot to take in!), but today Jody, Jamie, and Missy all spent some time checking it out.

Jody only took a quick peek or two, but was definitely intriqued.

Not all the holes have tubes in them, which Jamie quickly figured out

Missy spent the most time on the rock

and was the most proficient

yum!

Out of the Box!

August 31, 2011 by Diana

Tickets are now on sale for Out of the Box 2011, Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s gala auction in Seattle. They are going fast, so get yours while they last!

There will also be an online auction for out-of-town supporters. The online auction site is up and we’ve added information about our important Fund-a-Need project. Auction items will be added in the coming weeks, and there will be some incredible items! The online auction is shorter this year: October 7-9th.

I am looking for a few more Individual Sponsors for the event. We have some specific expenses that need covering, including $250 worth of gas for the truck we are renting to get all of the auction stuff from Cle Elum to Seattle and back ($250 is a Play Face Sponsor level), about $500 (Play Laugh Sponsor level) for really cool volunteer auction t-shirts (we’ll sell a few too), and about $500 in printing costs (another Play Laugh Sponsor could cover this).

Individual Sponsorships range from $100 Head Nod / Table Sponsors to $5,000 Pant Hoot Sponsors, with some fun sponsor levels in between. Perhaps blog readers could team up to donate towards a particular level? Learn more about who’s already stepped up to sponsor and how you can do the same on our Auction Sponsors page or just send me an email: [email protected].

Out of the Box 2011 is truly our biggest event to date. Volunteers worked really hard to procure awesome things for you to bid on. The Seattle event is going to have a wonderful food and wine, thanks to the chef at Bell Harbor and generous donations from Field Roast Grain Meat and Goose Ridge Vineyard and Winery, plus more wine from Dulces Bistro & Wine, Chandler Reach and Saviah Cellars.

Personally, I can’t wait!
