Nesting

The Many Nests of Jamie Chimpanzee

January 25, 2012 by Elizabeth

I was watching Jamie gather blankets and enrichment to make a nest in the playroom this morning and thinking about some of the unique and impressive nests she makes. She has some nesting habits that distinguish her from the other chimpanzees.

She often forms a circle with her blankets and leaves bare floor underneath:

When she’s making a nest near some caging, she likes to weave blankets or sheets in and out of the fencing:

But her favorite spot to nest seems to be at the base of the stairs in the playroom (maybe because it’s a good vantage point for keeping an eye on all of her chimpanzee and human friends). The nests she makes there always include an interesting combination of blankets, sheets, paper, toys, and any other suitable material she can find. She’ll generally walk around gathering her materials, arrange everything in a pleasing fashion, then settle down in the nest and inspect all the enrichment she’s collected.

The video below shows Jamie nesting with a bunch of the extra blankets we put out for the enrichment today. Have fun doing laundry tomorrow, Jackie!

Foxie making a nest

September 12, 2011 by Debbie

During cleaning this morning, Jackie and I spotted Foxie starting to nest with some blankets, so we grabbed the camera and quickly got a few paparazzi style shots.

Contentment

September 4, 2011 by Jackie

I just read this quote: “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” –Epicurus

I’m pretty sure Negra would agree:

Undercover

September 1, 2011 by Jackie

Missy has a way of making almost everything she does, no matter how mundane, silly. She has been thoroughly enjoying putting sheets and blankets over her head lately- both during play and while resting in her nest- and she incorporated that into her nesting technique today. Every addition to her nest, whether it be a sheet, a blanket, or a fire hose, began over her head and lingered for a bit before moving on to the next thing.

Once her nest was just right, she threw one more blanket over her and took a nap.

Another use for butcher paper

August 22, 2011 by Debbie

Butcher paper is not just for arts and crafts. Jamie and Jody find it very nest-worthy. They both had nests that resembled paper mountains!

As I shifted the chimpanzees from the front rooms to the playroom, Jody grabbed this heaping pile of paper to use for later in the day.
