the more you know

February 26, 2023 by Diana

Earlier this month, Anna revealed a half-sibling pair that we were not previously aware of (see this blog post for details if you missed it, but try to guess first just for fun).

Along with that information, we learned of the actual birthdays for Willy B and Mave!

It’s possible we could have had this information before, but their medical records did not include their dates of birth and I assumed they were unknown. So, I forged ahead and chose celebrated birthdays for Mave and Willy B, like we did for Negra, Jody, Jamie, and Annie, whose birthdays are unknown to us.

If you have a CSNW calendar, or have looked at their individual pages on our website, you might know that Willy B‘s celebrated birthday is coming up on March 1st. However, now we know that his actual date of birth is November 30th (1990).

We chose May 27th to celebrate Mave‘s birthday, but now we know that her actual birthday is September 25th (1989).

So, what are we to do for their celebrations this year?

It seemed only right that this year we celebrate both Willy B and Mave’s “calendar birthdays” as well as their real birthdays. No one is going to complain about two more parties, right?!

Speaking of parties and birthdays, don’t waste any more time if you haven’t yet purchased a limited-edition Cy’s Book Club t-shirt and/or tote bag in honor of Cy‘s birthday on March 12th

Below are some classic photos of these two birthday guys, but first, a very brief story from today. After morning cleaning, Cy was clearly looking for some “reading” material. I brought out a book for him. See photo below of the book’s cover:

I knew there was a risk that Cy would find something in the pages of the book that he found alarming. What I didn’t count on was that he would fixate on the smallest photos. The inside cover of the book features very small images of other books in the series (see below). While he looked closely at those small photos he frequently let out one of his unique “scary image alarm calls.”

Willy B and Rayne immediately came to his side. Based on their reactions, the other chimpanzees in his group are as perplexed as we humans are about Cy’s reaction to certain images, but it’s nice that they want to assist or just be near him when he’s alarm calling at an image in a magazine or book.

Willy B really seems to look up to Cy (we can understand why, propensity to overreact to images aside). Here are a few photos of the two of them together:

I spent most of today trying to capture footage of Burrito interacting with his new burrito Squishmallow for today’s blog. However, it just wasn’t happening! He kept running by it and wanting to play chase with his caregivers instead. He’ll play with it later, I’m sure!

Burrito Squishmallow for Burrito:

Instead for today’s video, I wanted to focus on Cy and his love for reading. I was able to capture him reading while cleaning the Mezzanine recently. This angle shows how much he scans each page and picture of his magazine, something you can’t always see from the other angles. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Jamie’s interest in architectural and western-themed magazines continues. You can get a little peak into her mind by observing which pages she lingers on…

The Bonobo Book

December 15, 2017 by J.B.

Today is sponsored by Kenneth Epstein in honor of Nicki Walters and in memory of her husband, Bill “Twister” Walters, on his birthday. Kenneth shared this message about today:

“Nicki Walters honored her husband Bill by sponsoring the chimps on his birthday. That beautiful gesture of love inspired me and many of their friends and family to share their love of the chimps. So much so that the Twister structure was built the following year in Bill’s honor. We lost Bill to cancer a few months later but he got to see the chimps play on the structure named after him. While we miss Bill we know that nothing would make him happier than knowing that the chimps are partying in his honor.”

We at CSNW are so thankful for the generosity of Bill, Nicki, and their family and friends. The chimpanzees continue to receive so much joy from their wonderful gift of the “Twister” structure! This morning as the chimps ventured out onto the Hill, Missy raced up the Twister as Jamie and Annie watched from below. When Missy started to climb down from the top she began to do somersaults all the way down, from firehose to firehose! We’ve never seen her do this before! It continues to be a favorite lookout for Jamie to oversee her home, especially during the long summer evenings. The joy the Twister has brought to the chimps is unforgettable, just like Bill.

CSNW had a very busy Sunday! Old friends visiting, our wonderful interns taking ID tests (and killing it!), materials being dropped off from the Chimpanzee and Human Communicate Institute, and of course cleaning. Jamie also received a new pair of boots yesterday, which she is very happy about. In the morning after I gave the chimps access to Young’s Hill, Jamie sprinted through the raceway very pilo and very excited for us to put the boots on and walk around the Hill! Young’s Hill was a hot commodity this morning. It felt like a warm spring day and the chimps were all about it! But at last the cold breeze came and it went back and forth between almost a rain storm and being sunny. The chimps enjoyed their sun while they could and Jamie persevered as usual being the amazing person she is. Here are a collection of photos throughout the day:
