Honey B

Spring Fashion with Honey B

March 15, 2025 by Sabrina

As everyone knows already, Honey B had another trip to the clinic recently for the lingering injury to her left hand. At the end of the visit Dr Jeffrey Friedrich was kind enough to leave a gift for Honey, a “surgeon bag”, check it out in today’s video!

Double Trouble and One Extra!

February 27, 2025 by Kelsi

Dora is back with Honey B and Terry! It’s been non-stop playing for Honey B and Dora. These two are like a whirlwind of fun, wrestling, laughing, and causing a little chaos. It’s clear the girls are having the most fun, but they enjoy having Terry around, too. Click here for the video!

Like mother, like daughter?

February 25, 2025 by Anna

Honey B was born on June 11th, 1989. Just hours after birth she was taken from her mother and raised by human caregivers.  Her mother just so happens to be Missy, a now longtime resident at CSNW. Missy and Honey B don’t live together in the same group at the sanctuary, and that’s not for lack of trying. During the now unsuccessful introduction process between Missy and Honey B’s groups, we watched for any inclination that they might know each other, but we didn’t observe any noticeable acknowledgement.

Here’s one of the few photos I could find with them in the same frame. Honey B is on the chair and Missy is sitting in the doorway:

Despite the apparent lack of relationship between Missy and Honey B, caregivers do see some behavior similarities between the two. Whether their behaviors are due to some inherited trait, or just a coincidence, that’s open to interpretation. I’ve listed a few of their shared similarities below:

  • An amazing ability to haze caregivers. Honey B is famous for spitting huge quantities of smoothie on an unsuspecting human. Missy always chooses to back up Jamie during hazing events with a round of threat barks and even the occasional leap at the caging.

Missy:

  • They’re both high ranking individuals in their groups.

Honey B:

  • They’re popular amongst their group mates, often found in a grooming or play session.

Missy:

  • They both are extremely intelligent and socially savvy

Honey B:

  • They can be stubborn shifters, sometimes choosing to hold up the cleaning process because they decide to stay somewhere else. For Missy it’s the playroom and for Honey B, it’s usually the front rooms that they choose to hang out in.

Missy:

  • They egg on the drama.  If there’s a fight, you can usually find them in the middle of all the chaos.

Honey B:

  • They are both picky eaters, usually preferring to eat just a few of their meal items.

Missy:

Today we talked about the similarities, perhaps another day we can discuss their differences?

A Spoon Full of Sugar

February 18, 2025 by Krissy Brasfield

As many of you know, there are several chimpanzee residents at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest who need daily medication.  Some require medication related to heart disease, such as Burrito and Cy.  Some take medication for pain management, such as Foxie and Negra.

So, how in the heck do we get chimpanzees to take medications?

You know what they say, just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down!

Most of the chimps are pretty easy, and take meds in a bit of Gatorade, such as Foxie, Terry, Lucky and Dora.   A few are a little fancy and want their meds in grape juice only, such as Cy, Burrito and Mave (I don’t know why I consider grape juice fancier than Gatorade, but I do!).  And then we have Willy B, Negra and Honey B.  We have to get creative with these chimps!  (In their defense, Willy B and Honey B are on several meds, and they change from time to time, so it’s understandable that they would require occasional changes to the meds recipe.  Oh, and Negra, well, she’s the Queen!)

We’ve been using honey pretty regularly these days with Willy B and Honey B and, knock on wood, we’re having some luck!

Check out today’s video to see Honey B enjoying her new meds concoction!

Valentine’s Day with Cy and Friends

February 15, 2025 by Kelsi

Ellen said it best yesterday, “We celebrated our forever valentines”. Cy loved the mail box this caregivers made for him, full of his favorite thing, but especially his paper hearts of him and Stanley Tucci. Please enjoy this video of Cy, Terry, Willy B, Gordo, Honey B, Mave, Lucky, Rayne, and Dora enjoying all their special treats yesterday!

Making The Most Of It

February 8, 2025 by Krissy Brasfield

Honey B and Terry have been living together, just the two of them, for a few weeks now.  As you can see, they are making the most of it.  Check out those play faces!

I must admit, the quality of these videos is not great.  But, I had to share!  I mean, those faces!  Gah!

Click here to see for yourself!

PRT A Day Keeps the Doctor at Bay

January 24, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Watch today’s blog video to see what the chimpanzees and our Positive Reinforcement Training team have been up to!

Here is a hint…

This is a EKG reading from Terry, using the KardiaMobile!

Honey B has been resting a lot today after her procedure yesterday. She spent her morning watching chimp videos from her cozy nest, and was reunited with Gordo this afternoon. Gordo seemed very glad to have his friend back!
