Foxie

Laughter

September 12, 2009 by J.B.

The chimps were in such playful moods yesterday! I could hear laughter coming from the playroom, so I grabbed the camera and caught Foxie and Jamie in a 10-minute long game of “steal the troll”. Thankfully, Foxie won in the end and the troll was returned to its rightful owner.

What a difference a day makes…when we came in this morning, the group had clearly been fighting and they had that look that says We can’t wait to take our frustration out on you, J.B., when you serve us breakfast!. Needless to say, I got drenched. But that’s what I’m here for!

Art for chimp’s sake

September 5, 2009 by Diana

I am SO excited about the donations that we have for our Celebrate the Seven auction (Buy tickets)

In addition to some incredible getaway packages, wine excursions and bottles of wine, restaurant gift certificates, and tons of fun, fun stuff, we have art that was donated specifically for this auction. Many pieces are illustrations and paintings of chimpanzees, including the Cle Elum Seven. Below are just a few.

In a few days, I will post a one-of-a-kind necklace made by CSNW supporter Tamela – it will absolutely blow you away.

Be sure to get your tickets today and tell others about the auction! You can also spread the event through Facebook.

Margaret Parkinson’s 12x12in painting, “Negra in the Sun”
I have seen this in person and attendees are going to have to outbid me for this piece

Colin Redmon’s illustration of Jamie
Colin has been working for the past several months on ink illustrations of all seven of the chimpanzees for the auction – all of which are breathtaking.

Sally-Anne Ryan’s 24x20in painting, “Foxie and the Troll”
UK based artist Sally-Anne Ryan has an incredible talent for creating chimpanzee paintings:

Linda Griffin’s “Beautiful Hero” painting of Negra
Linda contacted us months ago about donating something for the auction. I had no idea the outcome would be so wonderful!

Self-recognition

August 29, 2009 by Diana

There are a handful of species who have demonstrated self-recognition, and chimpanzees are among this handful. Of the Cle Elum Seven, Foxie in particular enjoys mirrors.

Play Face Sponsorship

August 21, 2009 by Diana

Thank you, Barbara Lauterbach for being a play face sponsor for the Oct. 2nd Celebrate the Seven auction and helping to put these faces on Foxie and Missy! We need more sponsors – please consider becoming one yourself or having your business sponsor. Check out the benefits here.

Nap time

August 18, 2009 by J.B.

Most chimpanzees that have been raised by humans have trouble negotiating the chimpanzee social world. Jamie is lucky; she somehow managed to escape a decade in entertainment and two decades in research with a pretty good understanding of how to be a chimpanzee. That understanding, combined with her cleverness and strength, has helped her become the most dominant chimpanzee in her group.

But she has not left behind the human world that she grew up in. Jamie craves human attention. Usually this is positive, such as when she plays or grooms with her caregivers. Other times its negative, like when she “hazes” new volunteers to be sure they know their place. But sometimes she simply wants to be near people. Today, while I played with Foxie, Jamie came down the stairs and into the front rooms with some sheets. She quietly made a nest next to me and fell asleep.
