Ready to Go!

January 13, 2019 by Kelsi

Well these chimps were ready to go this morning! Jody and Foxie sprinted out the raceway onto Young’s Hill this morning. Annie sat and soaked in the crisp winter morning. Missy came rippin’ onto the Hill and had a quick morning hug with Annie and ripped right back inside! Burrito attempted to go out but quickly turned around to wait for everyone to come back inside. And when Jamie came out she was ready to conquer any quest!

Here is Foxie a little pilo out on the Hill:

After a brave attempt to hang with the girls, Burrito patiently waited for them to return to the Green House safely:

Burrito retreated back to the warm front rooms eventually:

Neggie with all her wisdom knew where she wanted to be (on the platform in Front Room 2 with a pile of blankets):

Jamie taking a quick yoga tree stand:

Later, after her Hill adventure she spent her leisurely morning wearing an ankle boot and another boot in her pelvic pocket all while laying on a barrel watching the volunteers clean the Playroom:

Snowy day activities

January 8, 2019 by Elizabeth

It’s a beautiful, snowy day in Cle Elum, and the chimpanzees are cozying up in the warm playroom. I caught Jamie in the middle of making a nest (and doing some repair work on a wagon) in one of her favorite nesting spots.

Home

January 7, 2019 by Elizabeth

Every chimpanzee deserves a territory – a home space worth defending. One measure of welfare in a captive chimpanzee is whether they demonstrate territorial behavior. If they take ownership over their home, that’s a sign that they consider it home.

Here at the sanctuary, boss Jamie does the work of defending her family’s home. Every day, often multiple times a day, in all weather conditions, day and night, Jamie takes perimeter walks around the two-acre outdoor habitat to make sure everything is on the up and up. Sometimes she brings friends, and sometimes she goes it alone.

The Many Uses of Snow

December 27, 2018 by Elizabeth

Jamie’s been in a bit of a mood today. She spent much of the morning pelting unsuspecting humans with snow. Eventually, though, she happily settled down in a huge wrapping paper nest and decided she’d rather eat snow than throw it (much to the humans’ relief).

Christmas Eve!!

December 24, 2018 by Kelsi

Christmas Eve is the most exciting time of the year. There is so much anticipation built up, and Christmas is only one sleep away! I think the chimps have been pretty excited the past couple days and are getting a little restless for the Christmas party! So, that is why today we tried extra hard to keep the chimps (Jamie) very busy. Jamie had her normal routine of laying on a barrel to supervise chimps and/or humans (mostly humans), make her caregivers put her favorite boots on, build her nests, play a little chase, and monitor the cleaning. After cleaning the Playroom we put out fire hose knots as some daytime enrichment and I stuffed Jamie’s folio with a few crayons, some paper, and a book. Well, let’s just say Jamie has been very busy, or at least for most of the day! Later she needed a nap, nestled around her books, fire hose knots incorporated in her nest, and a boot tucked in her pelvic pocket for safe keeping!

Christmas Eve Eve

December 23, 2018 by Kelsi

It looks like it might be a White Christmas! While all the chimps were inside this morning I found Negra out in the Greenhouse alone. Negra was sitting by the raceway eating snow, she spent quite a bit of time out there. Negra really seemed to be enjoying her alone time! You might even notice her beet lips (I think they might have had some beets yesterday)…

Later, I found Burrito laying on a barrel looking out at the snow and stomping his feet:

Working for it

December 18, 2018 by Elizabeth

The Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees are usually cooperative. But sometimes they make us earn it.
