The Allure of Willy B (aka William, Wilbert, or Willard)

January 16, 2024 by Grace

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that all chimp personalities are different. Each chimp has their own unique quirks, traits, and histories that have no doubt played a role in who they are today. One of the greatest joys for me, as a caregiver here, is having the opportunity to get to know each of them on their own terms.

Life in the chimp house is a busy one and a lot of our days are taken up with cleaning, enrichment / food prep, and other important tasks that have to get done every day and usually by a certain time. In between the tasks of the day, we try and find moments to hang out with the chimps- if they want to see us, that is. Sometimes, we have everything done early and have a good amount of time in the afternoon to hang out with the chimps, but they’re not feeling it and would rather hang out with each other or nap (fair). Sometimes, we have to make the tough choice of balancing time with a chimp that’s asking for attention vs. catching up on the long list of tasks. Most of the time, though, it all works out to where we are able to get everything done and make ourselves available for the chimps.

These moments, I think, are where we really get to know each other. Trust and mutual understandings can be built and solidified through serving meals and little interactions throughout the day, but I think when we set aside everything we have going on and are totally present with a chimp friend is when we get to know them and they get to know us.

Willy B, as mentioned throughout a variety of our blogs, does seem to have some anxiety that can make it tough for him to interact or engage with both other chimps and the humans. He’s really grown as a person in the last few years as his group was integrated with Cy’s group and it’s been so wonderful to see him forming bonds with the other chimps in his group, who seem to have a high level of patience for the often-awkward guy who enjoys causing intermittent chaos throughout the day.

Up until recently, most of my interactions with Willy B have been him asking to look at photos / videos on my phone, which is totally fine. The last few weeks, though, he has seemed more interactive.Yesterday we finished cleaning in the morning and the task list was looking good, so I changed out of my scrubs to head out for office time. I went in to say goodbye and immediately Willy B initiated a game of play! It was the longest I’ve ever experienced with him and I couldn’t get myself to walk away, until he signaled to me that he was wrapped up with it too.

He can be aloof and hard to read, but he can also be so funny and sweet. He’s a complex guy and it’s such a special moment when he initiates spending time together!

Willy B, also affectionately known as William, Wilbert, Willard, and / or Sir William:

Burrito’s Big Birthday Bash!

January 7, 2024 by Grace

Yesterday, our dear Burrito turned 41. Can you believe it? To me, Burrito personifies youth, playfulness, & goofyness, so it’s hard to imagine that he is a day over 21.

We adore our dear Burrito for so many reasons, not the least of which being the fact that after just a few moments with him you’re smiling- no matter what kind of mood you were in beforehand. It’s like he is his own scientific principle and instead of Newton’s Law, it’s Burrito’s Principle: Emotions other than happiness cannot exist in the presence of Burrito.

Burrito’s back story makes us appreciate his reliably happy disposition even more, I think. Burrito was born in a lab in 1983 and used in research when he was just over a year old. Then, he was moved and used as a ‘house chimp’ before being leased out to an animal act. He spent one year outside of the lab before being sent back into research.

His story, like many others, is hard to hear and, often, hard to reconcile with the chimp that I know today. He greets me in the morning with a game of chase, then throughout the day he has a caregiver or two race him around Young’s Hill, then play a game of tug-of-war. All between grooming with his chimp family, watching his neighbors, and the other shenanigans he gets into throughout the day. Knowing what he has been through and seeing who is he today is a privilege and we owe it to him to share his story (and his joy) with as many people as we possibly can.

So, in honor of Burrito and all he is, we celebrate him every chance we get!

Yesterday, staff and volunteers put together a big birthday bash that included snow cones (with fresh fallen snow!), slinkies, giant kongs, coconuts, a Young’s Hill forage, TV time, and a special dinner of spaghetti with special sauce of sweet potato, red pepper, avocado (and love, of course).

Check out the video for the full party and don’t forget to vote for Burrito’s photo contest! It ends tomorrow, January 8th at 6:00pm!

Prep, Play, Party

December 24, 2023 by Grace

Well, folks, it’s official- there’s only one more sleep ’til Christmas (if you celebrate). 🙂

Caregivers and volunteers have been sorting through generous donations, wrapping up a storm, keeping up with daily chores, and planning for the celebration tomorrow! Thank you to everyone who has donated items off of our wish-lists, every single one is so appreciated!

While the humans have been shuffling about, the chimps have been up to their typical tomfoolery. The other day I was walking by the front rooms in Phase 1, or Cy’s group’s side of the building, and I caught some pretty funny sheet action. Mave and Dora seemed to be playing with someone and the someone was determined to stay under the sheet! Who could it have been? Check out the video for the answer!

And a big, big thank you to our Comfort & Joy Donor of the Day: Virginia K.

Your donation of a set of hugging pillows has brought so much joy to the chimps (and humans) here! After a caregiver or two gave them each a big hug we set them up for Jamie and her group to enjoy.

I’m also super excited to tell you all that it’s SNOWING right now! Nice, big, gentle flakes that aren’t sticking yet, but we’re supposed to get some more tomorrow maybe. Anyone else dreaming of a white Christmas? 🙂

With winter in full swing outside, I thought I’d share some photos from this past summer to remind us all that summer & sunshine will be here before we know it!

The Very Giant Caterpillar

December 18, 2023 by Grace

We’re continuing the trend of giving the chimps items our supporters donated to us during our Comfort & Joy online auction! Today, we celebrated with a very giant, very squishy, multi-colored caterpillar. I mean, how fun is that?!

I didn’t get a chance to snag much footage today, but Cy started out his morning grooming the caterpillar as I held it on the other side of the caging. Then it went over to Negra and her crew… check out today’s video for more!

A special Thank YOU to Diana K. for donating the Multi-Colored Caterpillar!

With Christmas right around the corner, don’t forget that you can help us celebrate with the chimps by donating items off of our Amazon Wish-List! See more by clicking here. 🙂

A Few Handsome Guys

December 12, 2023 by Grace

It has been an uber busy day in the chimp house today with cleaning, general tasks, staff meetings, and more! The day has flown by, so for this blog I went through my phone for a few ‘photos from the vault‘ and found some great ones of our handsome chimp gentlemen. They really are just the best guys around!

We’re off to serve dinner to the chimps now, so I hope you enjoy! 🙂

Honey B & Co.

November 29, 2023 by Kelsi

It is so fun to watch a chimp like Honey B, who has always preferred human interactions, to seek her chimp friends out instead. Watching Honey B and Dora both flourish socially in their group has been one of the most rewarding parts of my job, as well as witnessing Mave find her soulmate, Dora. Please enjoy this video of Honey B, Dora, and of course, Mave!

Chimpmas is right around the corner! We have started to add enrichment and items that we need around the chimp house on our wish-list!

Thankful Every Day

November 28, 2023 by Grace

It’s the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which means… it’s Giving Tuesday! 🙂

If you haven’t heard of it before, Giving Tuesday is an internationally recognized day of giving as it aims to promote generosity as a part of every day life. Which, if you ask me, is just a sincerely lovely & comforting thought.

We rely on the generosity of you, our supporters, to do the work we do. All our residents deserve sanctuary and you are what makes that happen. We are grateful, every day, for each of you.

If you find yourself wanting to participate in Giving Tuesday, I would encourage you to donate by clicking the link here. There are so many ways to donate- from sponsoring a day of sanctuary, to donating directly to our produce fund, becoming a Chimp or Bovine Pal to one of our residents, or donating stocks– I can confidently tell you that every donation is felt and appreciated. Today, and every day, no donation is too small.

There are also the non-monetary ways to support the sanctuary, which I feel like sometimes get overlooked but are just as important! Sharing our posts, for example, to your social media or with your friends and family help us increase our reach. Which, in turn, helps us connect and share our residents stories with more people. That is so, so important to us. We owe it to our residents to share their names & stories as far & wide as we can. A simple share helps us do just that!

On that note, I hope you enjoy the short & sweet video today of best chimp friends Missy and Annie. 🙂

Also, in the honor of giving thanks, look at this amazing pile of donations from a week or so ago! Thank you so much to everyone who donates items from our wish lists or who sends us chimp-approved items. We are currently adding items that we need for our upcoming Christmas celebrations to our wish lists, so please check it out if you’re interested in helping us celebrate! 🙂
